Ladies and gentlemen, family and friends, we gather here today to celebrate the life and honor the memory of a remarkable man, my beloved husband, Karl. In the words of the great Bob Dylan, "May you stay forever young." As we honor Karl today, I want us to reminisce on his accomplishments, his kindness, his sense of humor and the lasting impact he left on everyone he touched.

Karl, born in Sweden to Ingrid and Valther, was the first of two sons. His name often caused confusion, with a smirk on his face, as he corrected people who spelled it wrongly. Resilience was a defining aspect of Karl growing up, as he was born with a kidney defect that led doctors to predict that he would probably live only until his fifties. Despite this diagnosis, Karl lived life to the fullest, spending childhood days traveling with his family to various events and countries, and even playing the guitar in his church's band.

As a teenager, Karl embraced life and sought out new experiences. He loved music and concerts, attending wild parties and riding his motorbike to explore the world around him. His love for music transcended genres, including jazz, reggae, classical, heavy metal and pop music. We spent countless Sundays enjoying jazz music at pubs together. In his professional life, Karl began in credit control and was later promoted to an accounts manager at a Volkswagen dealership, where he was well-regarded for his work ethic and talent as a manager.

Karl met his first wife, Heather, in Scotland, ultimately returning to Sweden for the birth of their two children, Iliana and Sebastian. The marriage eventually unravelled, leading Karl to return to England with his children. His journey brought him to Croydon, where he later met me. Our relationship began as friends giving each other lifts, blossoming into a loving partnership that lasted many years.

As we built a life together, we raised both our own children and several foster children. Karl's gentle, intelligent nature made him a wonderful father, offering stability and patience to each child. He took joy in teaching them to drive, fixing motorbikes and discussing cars together.

Our relationship was a union of two very different people, but our love and respect for one another made us stronger. Together, we enjoyed various activities, including solving crossword puzzles, reading whodunit crime novels, and attending theatre productions. Karl's passion for cooking traditional Swedish dishes led to unforgettable family gatherings and get-togethers, even if his timekeeping left something to be desired.

In the later years of his life, Karl's kidney problems surfaced, and he began spending more time in hospitals. But, his faith and endurance never wavered. In the words of the 12th chapter of Romans, Karl truly lived "at peace with everyone."

To honor Karl's memory, I would like to share a particular verse that held meaning to him, written by C. Rosetti:

"Remember me when I am gone away,
Gone far away into the silent land;
When you can no more hold me by the hand,
Nor I half turn to go yet turning stay."

And, as our final farewell, the words of the great poet Tagore resonate:

"Farewell my friends, it was beautiful as long as it lasted - the journey of my life."

As we say goodbye to our beloved husband, father, and friend, let us keep the memories of his love, laughter, and resilience alive in our hearts. May Karl's life continue to inspire us all, and may he rest in peace, forever young.
