Good Morning Family, Friends, and Neighbors,
First and foremost, on behalf of our family, I want to express our deepest gratitude to each and every one of you who has joined us today. Your thoughts, prayers, and unwavering support over these past few days have provided us with immense strength and comfort. We gather here today to celebrate the remarkable life of my brother, Gavin James Knight.
Gavin's story began on April 28th, 1965, at the New Somerset Hospital, where our parents, James and Violet Knight, welcomed their first-born son into the world. Growing up on Coronation Road in Maitland, Gavin cherished his role as the eldest and only brother to me.

From an early age, Gavin showed a thirst for knowledge and a deep appreciation for education. His journey of learning began at St. Johns Roman Catholic School in Kensington, where he embraced the opportunity to expand his horizons. In 1980, our family made a significant move to Mitchells Plain, embarking on a new chapter filled with hope and new possibilities. It was there that Gavin's high school years commenced at Rocklands High School.
In 1982, Gavin entered the professional world, starting at Metal Box, where he showcased an unwavering work ethic for twenty fruitful years. His dedication and commitment were evident in every task he undertook. Later, he joined I&J, pouring his heart and soul into his work until illness forced him to resign. Gavin's professional journey was driven by integrity, diligence, and an unyielding determination to provide for his loved ones.
But above all, Gavin found his true purpose when he crossed paths with Janine Lewis through Miles and Valenice. Their love blossomed, and on the 22nd of September, 1990, they exchanged vows at St. John Bosco Catholic Church. Their marriage was a blessed union, one that radiated love and strength. Gavin's greatest joy came from being a parent to his beloved daughters, Selina and Kayla Lee. Every decision he made revolved around their happiness and well-being, demonstrating an unwavering selflessness and devotion. To Gavin, his role as a father was his life's greatest privilege.
As the years passed, Gavin's heart swelled with pride as he welcomed two precious grandchildren, Mason and Cole, into his life. His infectious smile lit up a room whenever he spoke of them. Gavin's unwavering love and bond with his grandchildren formed the cornerstone of his happiness. He showed us that it is not extravagant possessions or worldly success that truly matter but rather the warmth of family, the laughter of our loved ones, and the richness of our relationships.
Just this past week, I took out my phone and played Gavin's voice notes. He so loved to send them, always starting with "Sister, it's your brother Gavin," as if I had more than one brother. I feel truly blessed to have his voice as a forever keepsake. It is during moments like these that I reflect on the years we shared as brother and sister. Regrettably, I never once said those two simple words that hold so much weight - "Thank You" - for being the most remarkable big brother I could have asked for.
Humble, loyal, giving, loving, thoughtful, and kind - these are the words that come to mind when I think of Gavin. Today, as we gather to celebrate his life, I invite you all to join me in remembering him.
But let us not forget the unique and infectious sense of humor he possessed. Gavin had a gift for bringing laughter into our lives, even in the most absurd situations. He could make your stomach ache with laughter, and his presence could light up the room with an indescribable warmth and joy. Losing him has left a gaping hole in our lives, a void that cannot be filled by anyone else. His love, his humor, and his very presence have created an immeasurable void that is felt not only by me but by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Today, as we stand here united in both sorrow and gratitude, I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to Gavin. Thank you for the laughter that echoed through our lives, for the adventures we embarked upon together, and for the treasured memories that will forever ignite a fire in our hearts. Gavin, though physically absent, shall never be forgotten. His legacy lives on in each of us, deeply rooted in the love and wisdom he imparted.
Let us honor the remarkable life of Gavin James Knight. May his humble and inspirational spirit guide us as we navigate the journey ahead. Farewell, dear brother.
Amen.
