Good afternoon, family, friends, and loved ones gathered here today. We come together to celebrate, remember, and pay our respects to a man who was not only a brother to me but also a friend and inspiration - Ernest George Potter.
Ernest, the oldest of the three Potter boys, was truly a guiding light in our lives. He was eight and a half years older than me and took on the role of big brother with pride and joy. He was our protector, our teacher, and, above all else, our role model. Born and raised in Wembley, Ernest attended Perth Boys High School, where his talent for English shined bright. Though he didn't have much to say about his school experience, it was clear that Ernest had an affinity for language.
One of my fondest childhood memories was when Ernest took it upon himself to teach me how to play chess. He was patient and kind, truly embodying the essence of a big brother. Though he had a bit of a mischievous side, his heart always remained in the right place.

Ernest's love for the beach knew no bounds. He was an avid surfer, chasing waves as far south as he could to share that passion with others. His early days spent at City Beach with his surf crew remain etched in our memories. To quote The Beach Boys, a band he adored, "Catch a wave and you're sittin' on top of the world." Ernest has now caught that eternal wave to guide him on his final journey.
But his love of the ocean eventually took its toll - skin cancer cut his time with us much too short. Yet, even during his battle with cancer, Ernest possessed a strength and grace that we all admired. His will to live life to the fullest, spending precious time with family and friends, showed us what it truly meant to be resilient.
Ernest often found solace in music, and one song, in particular, captures the essence of his spirit: Santana's "Europa." The melody, like Ernest, is both tender and powerful, a beautiful reminder of the strength in vulnerability. Whenever we hear the soul-stirring notes of "Europa," we will undoubtedly be reminded of Ernest's unwavering courage and love.
As we gather today to pay our final respects to Ernest George Potter, let us remember that his life was one filled with love, laughter, and adventure. Through the ups and downs, he remained an example of what it truly means to live life passionately and with purpose.
Ernest, you will be forever missed by those who had the honor of knowing you, and your unconditional love will be eternally etched in our hearts. As you surf the waves of eternity, watch over us, and continue guiding us through life.
May you rest in peace, my beloved big brother.
