Loice Dodds Kendrick - March 08, 1925 - April 16, 2024

Departed: 04/16/2024 (Haynesville)
Obituary Preview: Loice Kendrick passed away April 16, 2024, at her home in Haynesville, Louisiana.  A celebration of her life will be held Saturday, April 20, 2024, at the Bailey Funeral Home in Haynesville. Visitation is at 2:00 p.m. followed by a service in the chapel at 3:00 p.m.  Interment will be in the Old Town Cemetery under the direction of Bailey Funeral Home of Haynesville, LA.  A reception will be held at the Country Club of Haynesville after the service. She is survived by her four children: Peggy Stemmans and husband Mike, Ronnie Kendrick and wife Eileen, Terry Kendrick and wife Tina, and Don Kendrick and wife Cathy.  She is also survived by ten grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren, and one great- great grandchild.  Our mother was born in 1925 in West Texas. She grew up during the Great Depression where the lessons of conservation and self-sufficiency were instilled in her for life. She met our father during  World War II in Fort Worth, Texas. She and her sister Nell were working there in an airplane factory. Dad was her supervisor. Their courtship was brief, possibly because of the war’s urgency. Dad brought her to Haynesville at Christmas in 1944 and they were married in his parents’ living room. After the war’s end they moved to Haynesville and built a house next door to her in-laws. Except for a few years in Magnolia, Arkansas, she lived the rest of her life in this home. When her youngest child started school, she went to work at Becton Dickinson, the glove plant in Haynesville, as a cost accountant. When Dad retired, they decided she should as well, although she was ten years younger than he.  In retirement Mother found her passion, something she had loved as a child in West Texas: Nature. She joined the Audubon Society; she became a Master Gardener. She began teaching at ecology camp in Arkansas, a camp that several of her grandchildren attended. She started an ecological festival: The Celebration of Butterflies in Haynesville, now in its 25th year. She wrote a book about gardening to attract butterflies. Then wrote another book about her family in Texas and one more about the Kendrick family. On her computer now is a book of poems she was working on.  Our Dad died in 1996. In 2002 Mother married Sterling Lacy, a recent widower from Magnolia, Arkansas. He and his wife had been in the Arkansas Audubon Society where Mother was also a member. She and Sterling took many national and international trips together before Sterling died in
2012. One of the last books Mother published was a history of Haynesville. Its author was a West Texas girl who came to Haynesville in 1944 and stayed. The family wishes to express their deep appreciation for the care provided by Dr. Sam Abshire and Peggy
Evans.

During this time, one summer, in her hometown of Haynesville, she met the love of her life, Don Stinson, who was in the process of earning a petroleum engineering degree. Upon graduation, BJ was a high school English school teacher for a few years before moving to Monroe, where she would ultimately stay and raise a family. She was a first-class problem solver, entertainer, and an overall first-class lady. BJ had a radiant personality, endless generosity, strength, and grace. She was a friend to all and would always lend a helping hand to anyone in need. She was the rock of our family. The one thing BJ always made sure of, that was that her and her family put the Lord first. Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written announcement of someone's death, typically including a brief biography, family details, and information about the forthcoming funeral or memorial services. It serves as a way to inform the community and honor the deceased's life.

Where are obituaries published?

Obituaries are commonly published in newspapers, both in print and online editions, as well as on dedicated memorial websites, social media, and sometimes within community newsletters or church bulletins.

Who writes an obituary?

Obituaries can be written by family members, close friends, or funeral directors. Occasionally, individuals write their obituary ahead of time as part of their end-of-life planning.

Is it mandatory to publish an obituary?

No, publishing an obituary is not a legal requirement. It is a personal choice made by the family or the executor of the deceased's estate, often based on tradition or the desire to publicly acknowledge the person's death.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

An obituary usually includes the deceased's full name, age, date and place of death, a summary of their life's accomplishments and personal interests, surviving family members, and details about any funeral or memorial services. Some may also include a cause of death if the family wishes to share it.

How long after a death should an obituary be published?

While there's no set timeline, obituaries are typically published within a few days to a week after the death. This allows time for the family to cope with initial grief and also ensures timely communication of funeral service details to the community.

Is there a standard length for an obituary?

There's no strict length requirement for an obituary. It may be a short, straightforward notice or a longer piece that captures a rich and detailed account of the deceased's life and legacy.

Can an obituary include a photo?

Yes, many obituaries include a photo of the deceased. It's typically a recent and clear headshot, but some choose to use an older photo that reflects a significant time in the person's life.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost to publish an obituary varies widely, depending on the publication's pricing structure—some charge by word count, column inch, or offer a flat rate, including online postings. It's advisable to check with the specific publication for their pricing details.

What should be considered when writing an obituary?

When writing an obituary, consider the tone, the factual accuracy, the wishes of the deceased (if known), and the feelings of surviving family members. Respect and sensitivity are paramount, as well as the privacy of those who are grieving.

Can obituaries be used for genealogical research?

Yes, obituaries are valuable resources for genealogists, as they provide information on a person's date and place of death, surviving relatives, and biographical details that can help piece together a family history.

Should children be mentioned in an obituary?

Yes, it is common to mention surviving children in an obituary to acknowledge their relationship to the deceased. However, consider using only first names or initials to protect their privacy, especially in widespread publications.

Is it necessary to mention the cause of death in an obituary?

Mentioning the cause of death is a personal choice and is not necessary if the family prefers to keep that information private. Some families choose to mention it, particularly if the deceased was involved in advocacy or if the family wishes to raise awareness of a specific medical condition.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

An obituary is a more detailed account of someone's life, accomplishments, and the relationships they leave behind, often written in a narrative style. A death notice is a shorter, more formal announcement of someone’s death, usually providing only essential details such as the name, age, and information about the funeral services.

How can an obituary reflect the personality of the deceased?

To reflect the personality of the deceased, you may include anecdotes, quotes, or specific details that capture their spirit, humor, and unique qualities. Personal stories and descriptions can make an obituary more engaging and meaningful.

Can family disputes affect the contents of an obituary?

Family disputes can complicate the process of writing an obituary, but it is essential to approach the task with empathy and focus on the life and honor of the deceased. Seeking consensus or a neutral party to draft the obituary may help in these situations.

How do I submit an obituary to a publication?

To submit an obituary, contact the publication's obituary department to obtain their submission guidelines, pricing, and deadlines. Many newspapers and online sites offer online submission forms or email addresses specifically for obituary notices.

Is it acceptable to include charitable donations in an obituary?

Yes, it is common to include a request for charitable donations in lieu of flowers in an obituary. Families often suggest donations to a charity that was important to the deceased or related to the cause of death.

What if there's an error in a published obituary?

If an error is found in a published obituary, contact the publication as soon as possible to request a correction. Most newspapers and other media outlets are willing to correct factual mistakes in a subsequent issue or online update.

How can an obituary support the grieving process?

Writing and reading an obituary can support the grieving process by offering a chance to reflect on and celebrate the life of the deceased. It can also help in acknowledging the loss and involving the community in the mourning process, which can provide comfort to those left behind.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, many people choose to write their own obituary as part of pre-planning their funeral arrangements. This can ensure that the information is accurate and reflects the person's wishes, taking the burden off family members during a time of grief.
