Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary serves as a notice of someone’s death, typically published in the newspaper or online. It acknowledges the loss, provides information about the funeral or memorial services, and shares details of the deceased's life, achievements, and the family they leave behind.

How does an obituary differ from a death notice?

A death notice is a shorter announcement that confirms the death and the date of funeral services, often without personal details, while an obituary is more comprehensive and includes a biographical sketch of the deceased.

Who writes obituaries?

Obituaries can be written by family members, friends, or sometimes by staff at the newspaper or funeral home, either from information provided by the family or from a pre-written obituary the deceased prepared in advance.

Are obituaries public records?

Once published in newspapers or online, obituaries become publicly accessible. However, they are not considered 'public records' in the same way that birth certificates or marriage licenses are.

What should be included in an obituary?

An obituary typically includes the full name of the deceased, date of death, significant life accomplishments, information about the funeral or memorial service, and the names of surviving family members. It may also include personal anecdotes or a short biography.

How do you begin writing an obituary?

To begin writing an obituary, start with the full name and age of the deceased, followed by the time and place of death. Then, proceed to write about their life, achievements, the legacy they leave behind, and any funeral or memorial service details.

What is the appropriate length for an obituary?

The length of an obituary can vary significantly. It may be as short as a few sentences for a death notice, or it can extend to several paragraphs to include detailed biographical information and personal stories.

How can one ensure accuracy in an obituary?

To ensure accuracy in an obituary, verify all factual information such as dates and names. It's also wise to have family members or close friends review the obituary before it is published.

Is it necessary to mention the cause of death in an obituary?

Mentioning the cause of death is not necessary and is entirely up to the family's preference. Some may choose to share this detail, while others might prefer to keep it private.

Can obituaries be published in multiple locations?

Yes, obituaries can be published in multiple newspapers, online obituary sites, social media, or through funeral home websites to ensure wider dissemination to friends, family, and community members.

What is the cost of publishing an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary can range from free to several hundred dollars, depending on the length of the obituary and the publication's pricing structure. Online postings may have different rates than print publications.

Are there any common phrases or terms used in obituaries?

Common phrases include “survived by,” “preceded in death by,” and “passed away.” Terms like “in lieu of flowers” are also used to direct readers towards preferred memorial contributions.

How soon after death should an obituary be published?

An obituary is generally published several days after a death, allowing time for the family to notify close friends and relatives directly and to make arrangements for funeral or memorial services.

What if the deceased left specific instructions for their obituary?

If the deceased left instructions or pre-wrote their obituary, the family should honor these wishes as much as possible, making any necessary edits for clarity or completeness before publication.

Is it possible to include a photograph with an obituary?

Yes, a photograph can often be included with an obituary. The type of photo varies, from professional portraits to more personal, candid shots that reflect the personality of the deceased.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online site?

To submit an obituary to a newspaper or online site, contact the publication directly to inquire about submission guidelines, deadlines, and fees. Most publications require submission through their website, email, or a dedicated obituary submission form.

Can family members and friends contribute to writing an obituary?

Definitely. Family members and friends can collaborate on writing an obituary, often providing personal stories, memories, and details that a single writer might overlook.

What tone should an obituary have?

An obituary should generally adopt a respectful and sincere tone. While it is a document of public record, it also serves as a tribute to the deceased and should therefore reflect the life and personality of the individual.

Is it appropriate to include charitable donations in an obituary?

It is quite common and appropriate to suggest charitable donations in memory of the deceased. This can be placed towards the end of the obituary with details on the charity and how to contribute.

How can privacy be maintained when publishing an obituary?

To maintain privacy, limit the amount of personal information shared, such as exact home addresses or details of surviving minors. Instead, focus on the life and legacy of the deceased.

What are the benefits of publishing an obituary online?

Publishing an obituary online can reach a broader audience quickly and can be shared easily through social media and email. Additionally, online obituaries often allow for longer text, photo galleries, and multimedia elements.

How long do newspapers typically hold on to obituaries?

Newspapers may keep archives of their publications, including obituaries, indefinitely. However, online access to these archives may vary, with some newspapers offering this content for free while others may charge a fee or have a limited time window for free access.
