Theresa Bagnato - June 28, 1929 - October 30, 2021

Departed: 10/30/2021 (Carnegie)
Obituary Preview: It is with great sadness that the family of Theresa “Terry” Bagnato announces on October 30, 2021, at age 92, her heart, so full of love, took its final beat. Born to the late Nicholas and Rose Spano on June 28, 1929 in Imperial, PA. Beloved wife of Joseph Bagnato for 65 years until his passing in 2015, adored by her children Joseph Bagnato and Janet (Joe) Farkas, and cherished grandmother to Joseph Farkas Jr, Jason Farkas, Joe Bagnato Jr, Pamela Watson, and Lewis Bagnato. Also preceded in death by her dear sister Kay Romano. A resident of Carnegie most of her life, Terry was a member of Holy Souls Parish, St. Elizabeth Anne Seton and Saint Raphael the Arch Angel. Terry and Joe moved to South Fayette 27 years ago to be near their daughter and her family. In her early years Terry attended business school and worked at Bell Telephone in Carnegie, met and married the love of her life in 1949, and became the most devoted wife, mother, and homemaker any family could have. Terry had the true heart of a volunteer starting in her youth as a member of the Sodality at Holy Souls, then the Christian Mothers, always cooking for church functions and donating her time wherever needed. When her children were growing up she devoted herself to their education and the PTA, serving proudly as president for many years. Everyone knew you could always count on Terry. Later in life she became a longtime volunteer at St. Clair Hospital, a place that gave her such pleasure helping others and where she had so many caring friends, and where she took her final breath.  She was so proud of her Italian heritage, amazing everyone with her culinary talents, always preparing the most delicious Italian dishes and desserts. Nothing brought her more happiness than cooking, especially for those she loved. She also enjoyed her flowers and herb garden, knitting her famous Afghans and scarves, puzzles, coloring, and singing.  Terry had the most beautiful voice, singing solos in the choir while attending Carnegie HS and in the church choir, as their May Queen, and now singing with the choir of angels.  She traveled extensively over the years with her husband Joe and her family. Terry and Joe enjoyed their many trips out west to Las Vegas, Phoenix, and California. After her husband passed away, she continued to enjoy traveling with her daughter Jan and her family. Terry’s warmth and compassion can never be replaced.  She was a shining light in all our lives. You always felt her love and knew how very special you were to her. Her family is extremely grateful to all her caring friends and neighbors, and the dedicated staff at St. Clair Hospital and Providence Point. "We know how very blessed we were to have had such a beautiful person in our lives for so many wonderful years. Now the most beautiful guardian angel will be watching over us. Those we love always remain with us, you'll always be in our hearts Nunny, we'll love you forever..." Donations can be made in her name to St. Clair Hospital. In honor of Terry’s wishes, visitation and sevices will be private, arrangements made by Bagnato Funeral Home, Carnegie, PA.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a notice of a person's death, typically published in newspapers or online, that often includes a brief biography, details about the funeral or memorial services, and information about the deceased's family. It serves as a way to publicly acknowledge the loss and celebrate the life of the individual who passed away.

Is an obituary the same as a death notice?

No, an obituary is different from a death notice. While a death notice is a simple, brief announcement of a person's death and funeral details, an obituary is usually longer and includes a more detailed account of the person's life, accomplishments, and the legacy they leave behind.

Who writes obituaries?

Obituaries can be written by family members, friends, or the staff at a funeral home, sometimes with the assistance of the editors of the publication where it will appear. Some people even choose to write their own obituaries in advance as part of their end-of-life planning.

How do you choose what to include in an obituary?

Typically, an obituary includes the full name of the deceased, their age, the date of death, and a list of surviving family members. It may also contain a brief summary of their life, career, passions, and significant achievements, as well as information about the funeral or memorial services.

What is the appropriate length for an obituary?

The length of an obituary can vary widely. While there is no strict rule, most are between 200-500 words. Short obituaries may provide only essential information, while longer ones can include detailed biographies and personal anecdotes.

How soon after a death should an obituary be published?

An obituary is usually published within a few days to a week after death, allowing enough time to inform people about the funeral or memorial service arrangements.

Is it necessary to mention the cause of death in an obituary?

Including the cause of death is a personal choice. Some families prefer to include this information, while others may choose to keep it private.

Can obituaries be published online?

Yes, many obituaries are now published online on newspaper websites, social media, or specialized platforms dedicated to memorializing loved ones. Online obituaries can often include photos, videos, and a space for friends and family to leave condolences.

Where are obituaries typically published?

Obituaries are commonly published in local newspapers, on news websites, and through funeral home webpages. They can also be found on dedicated memorial sites and social media platforms.

Are there templates available for writing an obituary?

Yes, there are templates and guides available to help write an obituary. These can be found online, through funeral homes, or in books on the subject of funeral planning.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary can vary widely depending on the publication and its pricing structure. Some newspapers charge by the line, word, or inch, and the inclusion of a photo can increase the price. Online obituaries can sometimes be published for free.

What are the common mistakes to avoid when writing an obituary?

Common mistakes include misspelling names, forgetting to include important family members, not verifying service times and locations, and including too much personal information that could lead to identity theft.

Is it acceptable to add humor to an obituary?

While obituaries are typically formal and respectful, it is acceptable to add touches of humor if it reflects the personality of the deceased and is appropriate to the tone of the piece. It's important to consider the feelings of all who will read the obituary.

Should I include a photograph with an obituary?

Including a photograph with an obituary can be a touching way to remind people of the individual. Choose a photo that accurately reflects how the person would like to be remembered.

Can friends write an obituary, or must it be family members?

Friends can certainly write an obituary if they have knowledge of the person's life and the consent of the family. Sometimes, friends can offer unique perspectives on the dearly departed.

How specific should the details about the person's life be in an obituary?

The specifics about a person's life in an obituary should highlight their most significant relationships, achievements, and the qualities that made them unique. However, it is important to balance transparency with the family's comfort level regarding privacy.

Is it necessary to list all of the deceased's relatives?

It is customary to list immediate family members but listing every relative is not necessary. In the interest of space and relevance, it's common to mention only those closest to the deceased.

How do we phrase difficult aspects of the deceased's life, such as divorces or challenges?

Difficult aspects of a person's life, like divorces or other challenges, should be approached with sensitivity and discretion. It's often best to focus on the positive aspects of their life instead of spotlighting personal hardships, unless they were formative experiences that the individual openly shared or overcame.

Can an obituary be too short or too long?

An obituary can be too short if it fails to give adequate information about the person or the funeral services. Conversely, it can be too long if it becomes overly detailed, losing the reader’s interest. The key is to provide sufficient details that honor the deceased while keeping it concise enough to maintain reader engagement.

How should one handle the inclusion of step-family or non-traditional family members?

Modern families come in all forms, and the obituary should reflect the family as the deceased knew it. Step-family, non-traditional family members, and even close friends who were considered family should be included according to the wishes of the deceased and their family.

Can an obituary be updated once it has been published?

Once an obituary is published in print, it cannot typically be updated. However, online obituaries often offer the flexibility to edit or add information after they've been posted. It's important to review all details thoroughly before publishing to ensure accuracy.

What if we can't afford to publish an obituary in a newspaper?

If cost is a concern, consider publishing the obituary on social media, through a community bulletin, at the place of worship, or on free online memorial sites. There are many ways to share the information that may not involve the costs associated with traditional newspaper publications.
