Donald B. Abrahamson - September 02, 1932 - April 05, 2024

Departed: 04/05/2024 (Argyle)
Obituary Preview: Click here to watch Live Stream Argyle It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Donald B. Abrahamson, 91, on Friday, April 5, 2024, after spending a night filled with stories and laughter with his family. Born on
September 2, 1932 in Argyle, he was the son of the late Arnold and Mary (Ward) Abrahamson. Donald grew up in Argyle and graduated from Argyle Central School, Class of 1950. His graduating class remained close throughout the years. After graduation he realized that farming was his true passion and managed the family dairy farm until 1987. It was a difficult decision to move on from farming but anyone who has ever been a farmer knows that it is a difficult decision to stay in as well. After selling the cows, Donald worked construction for a short time until he became employed by Argyle Central School as a custodian. It was a job that he took great pride in and had some amazing friends and coworkers. It was not an easy goodbye for Donald when he retired, but his dedication to taking care of his wife, Ellen,
during her illness was unwavering. On a blind date with Richard and Pat Abrahamson on December 31, 1963 Donald met Ellen Walsh. They were married on October 10, 1964 and spent their years together raising their six children. The true love between Donald and Ellen was obvious and inspirational. Between dances at weddings to their favorite song “Old Time Rock and Roll,” and the small everyday moments, anyone could see that they loved and cared for each other throughout their many years together. Donald demonstrated his unwavering dedication and attachment to his wife by driving to Fort Hudson nursing home every single day to be by her side. He was a well-known visitor to the nursing home and the connection between Donald and Ellen
had all those who witnessed them inspired to achieve a love like that as well. For Donald, a day well spent was a day supporting his family by always showing up. No matter the occasion; school sporting events, plays, graduations, and simple visits to talk about life, Donald wanted to be on the sidelines, in the audience, and always present and reliable for his children, grandchildren, and other friends and family as well. As a sports lover himself, Donald would follow local teams and would always cheer on the underdog even if he did not have a direct connection to the team. Donald was always so proud of his children’s and grandchildren’s accomplishments whether they were small or large, and he always made it a point to make sure they knew. As a friend or member of the family, you could always count on Donald to call you to sing you happy birthday no matter what, and he was well
known for his firm and solid handshakes. Besides his parents and his loving wife Ellen, Donald was predeceased by his brother Richard, brothers-
in-law William Selfridge, Pete Hartzog and sister-in-law Ruth Fish. Left to cherish his memory are his children, Faith (Mike) Higgins, Terry (Cheryl) Abrahamson, John (Sue) Abrahamson, Brian (Julie) Abrahamson, Julie (Marty) Bishop, and Amy (Ken) Aubrey; and his daughter- in-law Helen Deyette and her husband Tom. In addition, his grandchildren; Justin, Josh, Matthew, Michael, Ryan, Kailynn, Jenna, Kristopher, Heather, Autumn, Anna, Eric, Lindsey, Lesley, Alaura, Aimee, and Alyssa. As well as his sisters in law; Pat Abrahamson, Joan Hartzog, Mary Jane (Lynn) Manz, Shirley Selfridge, Gail (Larry) Varney, and brothers in law Garland (Lucy) Walsh, Daryl Fish, and several great-
grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Phyllis Marie Pierce - April 02, 1943 - October 30, 2023

Departed: 10/30/2023 (Argyle)
Obituary Preview: Phyllis Marie (Hoffer) Pierce of Waterford, New York, died after a brief illness on Monday, October 30, 2023. She passed away peacefully, listening to one of her favorite old school country songs, “Farewell Party,” surrounded by her loving family. She was 80 years old.
Born on April 2, 1943, Phyllis grew up in Argyle, New York, the daughter of Nettie Mae (Chapin) Hoffer and Robert E. Hoffer. She was one of five children, and the only girl, spending her childhood on a working dairy farm with the same chores as her brothers. As a First-Generation German American, she was proud of her family’s heritage, and maintained relationships throughout her life with many relatives still in Austria. Phyllis graduated from Argyle Central School and shortly after married the love of her life, George F. Pierce Jr. of Fort Edward, New York. The two were married for almost 60 years.
Affectionately known as “Tilly,” she had a variety of jobs throughout her lifetime, her proudest being a mother to her four children. Her career began working in her children’s school cafeteria. She then moved on as a teaching assistant in the Special Education department, also at ACS. In the mid-80s, she and George moved to Troy, New York and opened “Building #3,” a small, blue-collar tavern in the heart of South Troy. For years, Tilly and Geo enjoyed having long term friendships with their group of regulars that came in for a cold Genny Cream Ale and her homemade chili. After selling the business, she began her seven-year retail career at Walmart, retiring with the title of manager.
Throughout the years, she enjoyed cheering on Carl Edwards during Nascar races and watching her favorite New York sporting teams like the Bills, Yankees, and Giants, and attending sporting events, concerts, and milestone moments for her grandchildren. In the 70s, she enjoyed her weekly bowling excursions, her perfectly coifed, frosted wigs and her blue velvet hot pants. In more recent years, Tilly loved to order something new online just about every week, bet on the ponies, play games on her phone like Candy Crush and gossip on Facebook, earning herself the nickname “Times Union Tilly.” Beyond a general love of animals, she was specifically fond of Husky dogs, after being gifted one by George years ago while living on the Story Road Farm. Over her lifetime, she collected countless Husky related items from stuffed animals to blankets and cutting boards. She was also an avid collector of Native American dolls and memorabilia. When visiting her home, it was commonplace to see her favorite soap operas and game shows on the TV, and country music tunes playing while she and George did a little Argyle shuffle dance move. She would also make sure to offer food, like her famous “baked zita,” lasagna, or goulash. Italian foods were her specialty but saying them correctly wasn’t always. Tilly loved any family event, specifically ones centered around the Fort Edward home of her cherished mother-in-law, Elizabeth “Gram” Pierce. Her favorite holiday was always Christmas, happy to spend that time with the ones she loved the most.
Beyond her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Geo, and her brothers, Bobby Hoffer (Elaine) and Phil Hoffer (Sandra), and a plethora of her beloved animal companions.
She is survived by her four children, Steven Pierce (Rob), Tracey Pierce (Carlos), Michael Pierce (Elaine), and Kelly Reed (Kevin), as well as her grandchildren, Brandon, Zachary (Alessandra) and Tyler Reed, and Chloe Pierce. Last year, she was incredibly honored to gain the title of great grandmother to baby Charlotte Reed. She was also very close with her nieces, Kristen and Kaitlin Brown. Phyllis is also survived by two of her brothers; Rod Hoffer (Joanne) and Ron Hoffer (Cindy), and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank the medical staff at Samaritan Hospital for the care and kindness extended during her hospital stay. Specifically, Nurse Gabby, who made sure Tilly and her family were comfortable during her final moments.
Friends may call from 11am to 1pm on Friday, November 3, 2023, at M.B. Kilmer Funeral Home, 123 Main Street, Argyle, NY 12809.

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who want to pay their respects. They help to notify people of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and offer a chance for loved ones to express their condolences.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The responsibility of writing an obituary often falls on the family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, a funeral home or obituary writer may assist with the writing process. The person writing the obituary should have a good understanding of the deceased person's life and be able to provide accurate information.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include details about the funeral or memorial service, such as date, time, location, and any special requests or instructions.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words. A longer obituary may be more suitable for an online platform or a private memorial website.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or multiple photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and make it more engaging for readers.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and guidelines. You may need to provide the written obituary, along with any photos or other requested materials, by email or through their online portal.

Can I write my own obituary?

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, it's difficult to make changes to an obituary once it's been published in print. However, online platforms may allow you to make edits or corrections within a certain timeframe.

How long are obituaries kept online?

The duration for which an obituary remains online varies depending on the publication or platform. Some websites may keep them available indefinitely, while others may remove them after a certain period.

What is a death notice?
