Delmas Hall, age 79, of Columbus Kansas went to be with the Lord on Monday April 22, 2024. He was born November 27,1944 in Diana, West Virginia. Del and his wife, Brenda, owned and operated 4-State Printing from 1977 to 2007.
He was an active member in Calvary Baptist church. Brenda and Del opened their home to anyone who they could help. His creativity showed when he helped establish a children's program called Son Shine City in Columbus, KS. He played a character named Ivan Mahoney Lost (I M Lost), whom the children adored.
Del enjoyed painting, woodworking, hunting and he especially loved fishing. One time Del and a friend got up in the middle of the night on a whim and traveled from Kansas to West Virginia just to attend the annual Woodchopping Festival. Del was both compassionate and honest. He never met a stranger and would talk to anyone willing to have a conversation. He was a great storyteller, as well as quick-witted and a prankster. He will be missed by many!
He is survived by his daughter, Cheryl Verostek (John) of Burtonsville, MD, granddaughters Tori Melendez (Alex) of Sneads Ferry, NC and Lexi Yetley of Silver Spring, MD. Brothers Jess (Tim), Roy (Debbie), Mike (Terry), Gary (Charlotte) and sister Rella Tano. As well as numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Brenda of 52 years, parents Eugene and Marjorie Hall, brothers Elmer, Delmar, Delbert, Joe, and Glenn.

Obituary Preview: Joan R. (Macy) Bohn, 85, of Joplin Missouri passed away April 16, 2024. She was united in marriage to Garland G.W. Bohn July 1, 1956 in Wichita Kansas where they grew up together as childhood sweethearts. They were married 67 years. They lived in Columbus for 42 years where she was still a member of the First Christian Church and Retiree of the Columbus Telephone Company.
Known for her ornery sense of humor and love of adventure, she had a true passion for life. She treasured spending time with family and friends, and cherished all of their animals and plants at home. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her. The family asks that she be remembered for the joy she brought to others in life, not the sadness of her passing. "There are many people in life that will never leave, even after they're gone."
She is survived by three children- Son, Bryce A. Bohn (Dani) Boise ID, daughter Brett A. Wary (James Spriggs) Noel MO, and son Blair A. Bohn (Michelle) Eureka, MT.
Grandchildren- Conner Bohn Boise, ID, Tara Wary Spencer (Travis) Neosho, MO, Dustin Wary (Ana) Columbus, KS, and Derek Wary (Karah) Columbus, KS, Ashley Gullo Eureka, MT, Hazen Bohn Eureka MT.
And Great Grandchildren- Natalie and Jacob Wary (Derek), Jesse and Gabe Wary (Dustin).
Also surviving nephew and nieces Steven Bohn (Tawnya), Kathy Peavey (Mark) and Diane Dixon (Greg). and many more beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews from the Macy, Manley and Comstock families.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lloyd and Luella Macy and four siblings, Lois Prichard (Lee) and Barbara Bohn (Clifford) of Wichita, Lloyd Macy (Ann) of Starke Florida, and Don Macy (Barbara) of White Bird, ID.

Obituary Preview: Otto Hodge, age 91, of Columbus, Kansas passed away peacefully at Autumn Place Memory Care on March 26, 2024. He was born May 15, 1932 in Peel, Arkansas. He was married to Leulah (Stone) Hodge and later to Linda (Massa) Hodge. Both preceded him in death. Otto served in the Army. Throughout his life he worked at B. F. Goodrich in Miami, OK, was a farmer, raised cattle, and various other jobs. He attended Riverton House of Prayer.
Otto is survived by one sister, Sybil Koger, sisters-in-law Delores Hodge, Judy (Stone) and Carol Stone, brother-in-law Delbert Vanek, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alma and Hershel Hodge, sisters Ruby Waters and Ruth Murrow, brothers Fred Hodge, Dee Hodge, H. L. Hodge, and Lonnie Hodge.
Funeral services will be at Derfelt Funeral Home of Columbus, Kansas on Monday, April 1, 2024 at 10:30 AM. Burial will follow at Park Cemetery, Columbus, Kansas.

Also preceding her in death were her brother Alvin Ballou, and sister Vivian Spencer; and step-mother Clara Sturdy.

Betty L. Guy, 88 of Columbus, Kansas passed away peacefully in her home at Gran Villas on Friday, March 1, 2024.
Betty was born on November 30, 1935 to Pearly Elmer and Pearl (North) Gatewood.
She had two brothers, Homer Gatewood and Charles Gatewood, they preceded her in death.
After graduating from Cherokee County Community High School in May of 1953.  She married Bob D. Guy on July 2, 1953.  In 2008 they celebrated 55 years of marriage. He preceded her in death on February 12, 2009.
Betty stayed home and was a homemaker during the time of raising their three children and helping on the family farm. She enjoyed working with flowers, cooking, and their beloved dogs and horses they had.
Her greatest joy in life was her family and all the get togethers they would have and the holidays they shared.
Having the love of flowers she worked at Welch's Flower Shop and Country Gardens, both in Columbus for several years. She dearly loved the people she worked with and met during her working years.
She moved from the farm in July 2009 to Columbus and enjoyed visiting with her neighbors on the patio, sharing her baked goods, and taking care of her plants and landscaping.
Her son James (Jim) D. Guy preceded her in death on January 16, 2024.
Survivors include two daughters Jan Locke and her husband Randy, of Erie, KS, and Bobbi Koons and her husband Paul of Columbus, KS, 7 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was born to the late Charles and Beryl (Linder) Dillinger on August 2, 1929 in Wilmore, Kansas. After graduating high school, Wayne married Eilene Allen Dillinger on Sunday, February 11, 1951 in Galesburg, Kansas; she preceded him in death. He had several jobs over the years, working as a heavy machine operator for Red Fox, Cherokee County, Jayhawk/ Golf Explosives, and also as a farmer. Wayne enjoyed fishing, playing Yahtzee, reading books, gardening, and selling what he grew in the garden.
Also preceding Wayne in death are all six of his brothers and sisters, and his son Stanley Dillinger.
He is survived by one daughter, Judy Hastings and husband, Larry, Parsons, KS; and five grandchildren: Travis Wallace (wife Kathy), of Overland Park, Kansas, Dustin Wallace (wife Lisa) of Scammon, Kansas, Mindy Hernandez (husband Chris) of Overland Park, Kansas, Amanda Ball (husband Jason) of McCune, Kansas, and Ashley Edwards (husband Ray) of McCune, Kansas.
Graveside services are under the direction of Derfelt Funeral Home of Columbus, Kansas, and will be held Tuesday, March 5, 2024 at McCune Cemetery at 2:00 PM.

Her family remembers her as being an amazing daughter, mother, grandmother, and friend. She loved her grandson fiercely, as well as her dogs Mo Money, and Lucy Lou.
Surviving Shawndra are her mother Deborah Waits Smith; husband Dustin Clark; daughter Siarra Clark; grandson Heath; and her best friend Erin Coons.
She was preceded in death by her father Richard Waits, mother-in-law Caroline Raye Rowton, great grandma Betty, and great grandpa William Dunlap.

Nona June Jennings - February 18, 1928 - January 29, 2024

Lee's Summit, MO: Nona J. Jennings, age 95 of Lee's Summit, MO passed away at 5:15 PM on Monday, January 29, 2024 at her home. She was born in Chetopa, KS on February 18, 1928 to the union of Fred and Claudia (Imer) Burrows.
Nona wore a lot of hats during her working career. She and her husband moved to California early in their marriage where she found work picking fruits, and later worked at a canning factory. From there, they moved to Portland, OR where she became a welder, working side-by-side with her husband repairing damaged warships from the WWII era. They later moved back to Southeast Kansas where she attended First Christian Church of Columbus, and where she and her husband operated their 1,000 acre "Jennings Angus Farm" raising show cattle. She loved being a farmhand, a farm-wife, and a homemaker. She enjoyed cooking, taking care of her children, and participating in Cherokee County 4H events with them. One Christmas, she hand-sewed an entire Barbie Doll wardrobe for her daughter, Kathy. Her claim to fame was her appearance in a well-timed TV Commercial. Just before Neil Armstrong made his first steps on the moon in 1969, the live broadcast cut to a commercial break. Gulf Oil Company ran an ad about their care for environment in which they portrayed a young Nona Jennings water-skiing in the Southeast Kansas strip pits. After breaking ice for the taping in February, Nona chose to begin skiing from the dock rather than braving the cold water.
Nona was united in marriage with Ernest Robert "Jitter" Jennings in Columbus, KS on July 28, 1943. He preceded her in death on June 30, 2002. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Claudia Burrows; one son, Robert Allen Jennings; two daughters Linda Eggleston, and infant Sharan Kay Jennings; as well as nine siblings.
Survivors include her daughter, Kathryn Xenos (husband, Sheldon) of Lee's Summit, MO; four grandchildren, Elisabeth "Beth" Glover (husband, Micah) of Grain Valley, MO, Scott Eggleston (wife, Jessica) of Overland Park, KS, Laura Serrano (husband, John-Michael) of Lakewood, CA, Jonathon Xenos (wife, Anne) of Pleasant Hill, MO; eight great-grandchildren, Wyatt, Veronica, Thomas, Penelope, Nona Daisy, Lara, Sadie, Lainey.

Henrietta was born May 2, 1926, in Flint, Michigan. Her parents were Henry E Chancellor and Mary Emma (Jackson) Chancellor-Mack. As a young girl, her family moved to Lawton, KS. She lived most of her life in Columbus, KS before moving to Webb City.
She worked as a secretary at Berry Garment Factory, Oswego, KS before becoming a cashier for Louie Nicoletti and later at Piggy Wiggly, Columbus, KS. She then worked at the Columbus Daily Advocate, last working in different departments at the Cherokee County Courthouse, Columbus.
She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Columbus and the Eastern Star at Scammon, KS. She was an avid reader and enjoyed going square dancing and shopping. Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandkids.
Henrietta was married to W. L. “Junior” York on November 28, 1943 in Pittsburg, KS. He preceded her in death on February 27, 2014. She was also preceded in death by her parents, one son, Kenneth York, one Son-in-law, Keith Westervelt, three brothers, one sister, one granddaughter, and one great-granddaughter.
Surviving are three daughters, Bobbie Westervelt, Cherokee, KS, Connie Taft (Jack), Webb City, and Pamela Evitts, Webb City; one daughter-in-law, Lois Hummert-York, Cuba, MO; 14 grandchildren and several great and great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm, Monday, January 22, 2024, at Derfelt Funeral Home, Columbus, KS. Justin Coberly will officiate. Burial will be in Park Cemetery, Columbus.

Clarence Eugene Starkweather - December 13, 1954 - January 13, 2024

Loving husband, best father and most amazing “Pops” ever.
C.E. Starkweather, 69, of Pittsburg, KS passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on January 13, 2024.
He was born on December 13, 1954 to Marvin and Marcella (Allen) Starkweather. He grew up in Columbus, KS where he was a member of the high school band, basketball team and football team, earning a place in the Columbus Sports Hall of Fame in 2017. He went on to “major in football” at Fort Scott Community College (2006 Inductee to FSCC Greyhound Hall of Fame) and Wichita State University, where he met his wife Sally. It was love at first sight July 18th; and they were married October 3rd. After both graduating from Wichita State, they moved to Pittsburg, KS.
C.E. welcomed with his wife their daughter Jana into the world in 1986. He supported her in all her activities and travels, rarely missing an event.
Working for PittCraft printing for over 25 years allowed C.E. and his family to enjoy VIP access to Chiefs and Royals games.
C.E.'s favorite role was that of a grandparent. He treasured time with Patrick and William and loved being called Pops and Marshmallow man.
C.E. grew up in faith at Center Christian Church in rural Columbus, KS. For the past 30 years, C.E. was a member of the First Christian Church in Pittsburg. While an active member, he sang in the choir, drove the bus and kept the grounds.
Anyone that knew C.E. and Sally knew that they loved the lake, and enjoyed sailing, surfing, canoeing, and hanging out on Bob the swimming pad with their grandkids.
C.E. will always be remembered for his optimistic attitude, calm demeanor and the laughs he has given us. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Pat Smith. He is survived by his wife, Sally of the home, daughter, Jana Hickman (Dan) of Galena, grandsons, Patrick and William, and brother Kent Starkweather of Broken Arrow, OK.

Patty was born August 5, 1967 in Columbus, Kansas to the late Joseph Elijah and Shirley Temple (McQuillin) King. She is described by her family as being a jack of all trades, operating her own cleaning business, working in construction among other things as well. Though Patty and her husband James England were divorced, they remained best friends who loved each other very much. James took care of Patty and cooked and cared for her until the very end. Her family describes her as being loving and caring, and the sweetest most honest woman they ever knew, surely an angel now. They want Patty to know that they love her and they will see her on the other side.
She was preceded in death also by her siblings Radgie King, Ray Dean King, and Joanna King.
Survivors include James England; her son James Dean and his wife Rachel; daughter Alicia England; siblings: Debbie King, Joey King, Rusty King, Wesley King, Bill King, Sherry King, Angie King, and Charles King; Uncle Bear; cousins Eligha Tash, Rawleigh Tash, and Audie Tash; grandkids Dawson Ray Kellar, Clayton James England, and Elijah England; nephew Dustin Busby and his wife Ashley Busby; and Kirsten Busby; along with many other relatives and friends.
Arrangements are being handled through Derfelt Funeral Home. There is no visitation or service planned at this time. A private burial will be held. The family asks that memorial donations may be made directly to the funeral home to help cover expenses.

Kenneth "Tub" Moore - March 03, 1943 - December 29, 2023

Columbus, KS: Kenneth "Tub" Moore, 80, passed from this earthly life and went home to Jesus, December 29, 2023 at his home in rural Galena, Kansas. Beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, Tub was surrounded during his illness and at the time of his death by his family, who meant everything to him.
Tub was born March 3, 1943 to Russell and Wilma Moore on his family's ranch in New Kirk, New Mexico. Soon moving at age 5 to southeast Kansas, Tub is preceded in death by his parents and brother, William Moore.
Tub attended Messer School and graduated Columbus High School with the Class of 1961. He married his high school sweetheart, Sue Hart, who survives of the home, on October 30, 1963 at Columbus Bethlehem Church. Devoted to each other, Tub and Sue recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
Born to their union were two sons; Justin Moore (Misty) and children Sydney and Rhyley; and Walker Moore (Stephanie) and children Liberty and Lane.
Also surviving Tub are three sisters: Linda Jackson (Ronnie); Glenda Alan (Lemmie Stone); and Mary Ross, along with several nieces and nephews.
Tub began hauling hay at a young age, then went to work at Day and Zimmerman Ammunition plant. Tub worked for a time as a truck driver for P&M coal mines, and also drove tanker trucks delivering gasoline before going to work at CFI as an over the road trucker. He also hauled grain, working as a co-owner with Sue, of the family company T&S Trucking.
Working as a team, Tub and Sue developed and operate T&S Campground located east of the four way stop on north East Avenue, Columbus. Tub and Sue developed the campground from the ground up. Many special friendships were made camping with the Four State Hitchhiker Camping Club. The couple spent time camping all over, but enjoyed returning to Arizona, New Mexico, Oregon, and Branson, Missouri. Their love of the outdoors, especially lake trips, camping, and rodeos defined many family adventures and lifelong memories.
Tub was a member of Crestline Christian Church.

Grandchildren: Eryn Cantrell (Jessica), Laci Cantrell, Matthew Cantrell (Jade), Laura Poglayen (Chris), Jacob Cantrell (Becca), Shannon Cantrell, Jared Durand (Kelsey) and Lauryn Durand. Great-grandchildren: Emaline Cantrell, Gracielynn Poglayen, Rowan Poglayen, Sawyer Cantrell, Cole Durand and Logan Durand.
Charlie was born on July 13,1930 as Tommy Hittle and resided in Jackson County, Missouri where he was adopted on October 30,1930, by Charles and Leona Cantrell. Charlie grew up in Commerce, Oklahoma and was proud of the paper route he had as a child and of helping his dad in their family owned garage. When he was twelve, his father, with whom he was very close, passed away. His mother later remarried a Baptist Minister, Rev. Virgil Sikes, and they eventually moved to rural Columbus, Kansas.
After graduating from Commerce High School and working for several years, Charlie joined the US Air Force in July, 1951. He trained as an Air Traffic Control Operator and was later deployed to Daegu, Korea where he served almost a year. He received the National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, and Good Conduct Medal before leaving the service in July, 1955.
Charlie and Gwendolyn were married on January 6, 1957 and raised 5 children together. They lived on their family farm near Columbus, Kansas for over 60 years. Charlie recently moved to Columbus with his daughter, Barbara.
Charlie exhibited a strong work ethic throughout his life. He spent nearly 28 years at the BFGoodrich plant in Miami, Oklahoma. After early retirement when the plant closed in 1986, he started working for Lopp Oil Company in Columbus, Kansas (from which he retired three more times).
Charlie loved sports and coached Little League baseball for several years, later becoming the President of the Babe Ruth league in Columbus. He also enjoyed fishing, raising cattle on their farm, watching his favorite western shows, reading his Bible and World War II magazines.
Charlie and Gwendolyn were dedicated to their family. They sought opportunities to help when needed and especially enjoyed spending time with their growing family over the years. They were longtime members of Macedonia Baptist Church where they both taught Sunday school and he also served as a deacon, treasurer, and trustee.

He is remembered for his great sense of humor, quick wit, and his love for his children and nieces and nephews. D.J. was very artistic and had drawn a mural of a dragon on a wall at the school.
Preceding him in death are his birth parents, Rebecca and Douglas; and siblings Chasity Scholes, Jake Gobl, and Charley Scholes.
Survivors include his adoptive parents: Janet and Jerry Scholes; his wife Amanda Scholes; son Alexander Scholes, stepdaughter Lily Kohl; siblings: Curtis Scholes, Brandon Scholes, Holly Robarts (husband Brandon, Jeri Anne Scholes, Ashley Scholes, Courtney Scholes, Amber Fox (husband Brian), and Sabrina Scholes (Byron); grandmother Pam Howell; and grandmother Cora Seat. He is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews.
Cremation arrangements are being handled through Derfelt Funeral Home of Columbus, Kansas. A memorial service will be held in the chapel at the funeral home Friday, January 5, 2024, at 1:00 PM. Reverend Jim Sukraw will officiate. Burial of cremains will follow at Lone Elm Cemetery.

She was a member of Connecting Point Church, and loved spending time with her grandkids and going to the casino. In 1979, she married Daniel Flinn. To that union were born two sons, Nathan and Ryan. They later divorced. On August 2, 1997 she married Gary Skahan, who preceded her in death in 2000.
Also preceding her in death was one brother: Jim Downs.

Obituary Preview: Jarold “Jerry” Arthur Pickering, On the morning of Sunday, November 5, 2023. Jerry Pickering took his final flight home.
Jerry was born on December 30, 1939, in Columbus, KS. He graduated from Cherokee County Community High School, Columbus, KS in 1957. He was active in FFA and 4-H. Among his favorite memories of that time were playing trombone in the high school band at President Eisenhower’s Inaugural Parade and later with the NEO band at the Rose Bowl.
Jerry and Lois Ann Howard were united in marriage on Easter Sunday, April 2, 1961, at Center Christian Church, in rural Columbus.
Jerry’s love of airplanes and flying began at a young age, with model airplanes from cereal boxes and from watching swarms of planes fly over on their way to WWII.
He completed training at the National School of Aeronautics in Denver, CO and went on to work in the airline industry for the next 40 years. The majority of his career was with Frontier Airlines before they shut down in 1986. He continued working in the industry with 5 other airlines, including Eastern and Braniff, before retiring from USAirways in 1999. During his career he met and interacted with many celebrities and professional athletes. While working he was able to obtain his pilot’s license and later owned his prize possession, a Piper Clipper that he dubbed “Little Rudy”. In recent years, he had been working to restore Little Rudy so it could soar once again.
Jerry was the core of strength for his family and always put them first. He had a heart for others who were undergoing serious medical issues and spent many hours sitting with families at the hospital. Following major heart surgery in 1995, he volunteered with the Mended Hearts program in West Virginia where he was working. He was instrumental in starting the College Heights Men’s Prayer Breakfast that met at Granny Shaffer’s. He also assisted his wife, Lois, in her duties as nursery assistant at CHCC following the Sunday morning services.
Jerry was preceded in death by his grandparents, Clarence and Nellie Atkinson; mother and stepfather, Janice and Norman Harrington; father and stepmother, Arthur and Mildred Pickering; and one son-in-law, Richard “Trey” Clifton Darcey III.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Lois, of the home; daughters, Brenda Honeycutt and husband Kirby, Janet Peterson and husband Philip, Sharon Darcey-Martin and husband Keith, and son, David Pickering and wife Mara; nine grandchildren, Eric Honeycutt, Ethan Honeycutt, Andrew Darcey, Elaine Darcey, Luke Peterson, Lydia Peterson, Abigail Pickering, Caleb Pickering, and Joshua Pickering; one great-grandson, Fox Honeycutt; half-sister Norma Newell, half-brother Bill Harrington, and half-sisters, Linda Baker, Pam Anderson, and Jayne Luker.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, November 14, 2023, at 10:00 a.m., at the Derfelt Funeral Home in Columbus, KS. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m., Monday November 13, 2023, at the funeral home. Burial will follow in the Greenlawn Cemtery, Columbus.

Dexter’s passion for construction can be seen in several homes and businesses around the community.
Dexter is deeply loved by his family who he poured his heart into giving opportunities he didn’t have growing up. When he wasn’t working on projects, he enjoyed fishing and relaxing around the pool and fireplace. His witty sense of humor was always a crowd pleaser and will be greatly missed.
In addition to his wife, Sammye, Dexter is survived by two sons: Chad Michael Opela (wife Nicole) of Holden, Missouri, and Colton Doyle Opela of the home; one daughter, Krista Denise Hulsey (husband Michael) of Hockley, Texas; one brother Michael Wayne Opela of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; and 5 grandchildren: Aspen Opela, Sage Opela, Madison Hulsey, Kaleb Hulsey and Hunter Hulsey.

She was a devoted mother of seven, grandmother of fifteen, great-grandmother of 35, and great-great grandmother of six. Shirley and Raymond enjoyed trips to Branson and spending time at Grey’s Ranch on Grand Lake. Cooking for family and enjoying family dinners with loved ones filled Shirley’s kitchen most Sundays.
