Helen M. Vargulick - January 15, 1930 - November 08, 2023

Departed: 11/08/2023 (Peekskill)
Obituary Preview: Helen Mary Vargulick died peacefully on Nov 8 with her family beside her. She is survived by her son George M. Vargulick of Cortlandt Manor, daughters Julie Sanca of Peekskill and Debbie Lind of Garrison, and her one remaining sister, Ann Pinto of
Yonkers. Her husband of 66 years, George Vargulick, died in 2021. Helen Mary Lewandowski was born on January 15, 1930 in Yonkers and was the third child of six. She spent her childhood in Yonkers, where she talked of living in a cold water flat, but also having a warm family and neighborhood life. At an early age she started playing cards with her friends - they played every day after dinner and on rainy days throughout her youth. Through cards, with the camaraderie of her friends, she honed many life skills. She was a whiz with numbers, had a head for
strategy, and had an understated competitiveness. After high school she studied business and, not surprisingly, became a bank teller, in NYC. She met George Vargulick in 1954 in Yonkers. Her mother was very strict in her scrutiny of him as a potential husband, but George won her over and became an adored son in law. George and Helen moved to Peekskill where he pursued his lifelong career as a teacher, and, after having children, she worked in the Lakeland School District as a librarian's assistant. Through school connections and for many years as active members of the Sts. Peter and Paul Byzantine Catholic Church in Peekskill, she and George were highly engaged with their community. In their free time and in retirement, they were serious about round dancing and square dancing with the Tarry Squares. They ran bingo at their church, and played cards too, but cards were Helen's passion specifically, and she drew many other people into the challenge of it; she would play with anyone who was up for it. Cards
and social engagement kept her sharp and spunky, right to the end. Her funeral will be held on November 16 at 11:00 at Dorsey-Carlone Funeral Home
