Mary Louise Fickel - December 31, 1956 - March 13, 2024

Departed: 03/13/2024 (San Diego)
Obituary Preview: In Memoriam of ...Mary Louise Fickel, “My Once in a Lifetime!”
Mary Louise Fickel was born on December 31, 1956, in Parma, Ohio to the late Ralph E. Fickel, Sr. and the late Margaret Sherby Fickel. From what Mary would share with me, her dad was especially happy when she came before the end of the year...Tax Write Off!! But I digress. Growing up the youngest of three children she adored her older brother and sister. They were everything to her but sometimes too they were just big pains in the butt! She adored her older brother, the late Ralph E. Fickel, Jr. And her loving sister Annette Tuebner.
Mary would often talk about her days hanging with her BFF Sully and driving in her white VW bug, how she was able to weasel her dad into letting her skydive. And unfortunately, of the sudden passing of her dear friend at a very young age from that wicked cancer.
After graduating Mary decided to enlist in the United States Navy. She entered as a parachute rigger and worked on the aviation side of her Navy career. She lived an adventurous life during her time in the service. She retired as a Senior Chief after a successful 20-year career. Then while on her last duty station before retirement, Mary met Theresa E. Frank through a mutual friend Nick in 1997. It literally was love at first sight and the rest is history. Mary and Theresa got married on May 2, 2000, in Key West (not recognized) and legally wed on October 4, 2008, in San Diego. They have shared a good life together with their furry friends Tori, Abbie, Tia, Izzy and Casey. They have lived a life to be proud of!
Mary was quiet strength. She loved everything Marvel, Seattle Seahawks and WW2 history. She had a dry wit, sarcastic sense of humor, smart oh so smart but also a smartass as well. You just felt safe in her arms as I have for the last 27 years. After retiring from the Navy Mary received a scholarship to attend California Western school of Law. She graduated in 2002 and went on to have a successful 20-year law career. Mary wanted to travel to all the WW2 sites throughout Europe when we retired and moved to Bellingham Washington, to start our last chapter in life and whatever that looked like. Unfortunately, Cancer had other plans. We learned of her aggressive type of cancer on October 5, 2023, and I lost my beautiful angel March 13, 2024, after a valiant battle. Mary was an amazing warrior and the absolute “Once in a Lifetime!” She was not her cancer diagnosis; she was so much more!
Mary had an amazing cancer team at Prebys Cancer Center and Elizabeth Hospice.
Mary is survived by her loving wife Theresa E. Frank and their fur baby Izzy. She is also survived by her loving sister Annette Tuebner and her two nephews Robert Christian Tuebner and his family, Anna Willingshofer Tuebner and their two children Eric and Clara Tuebner; and Nathan Ross Tuebner. She is also survived by many amazing family and friends.
Predeceased by her parents Ralph E. Fickel, Sr. and Margaret Sherby Fickel as well as her brother Ralph E. Fickel, Jr.

Soraya Kay Moghaddam - April 24, 2014 - March 09, 2024

Departed: 03/09/2024 (San Diego)
Obituary Preview: It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of beloved Soraya Kay Moghaddam at 13.13 on Saturday March 9th 2024. Our darling Soso lost her battle with alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma, six weeks shy of her 10th birthday. She was feisty to the last, warding off unbearable soft tissue cancer pain until she found relief in the peace of eternal sleep.
Soraya is the daughter of Petty Officer Second Class Jennifer Lalla and Chief Siamac Moghaddam (United States Navy) and the older sister of Sasha Kai. Born in Gulfport, Mississippi, USA on the 24th April 2014, her short life was filled with travel and adventure, living in Oregon City, Boston and San Diego in USA, Chania in Greece and Pretoria in South Africa. She also visited the UK, Germany, Switzerland, Austria and France. She called San Diego home and her favorite city was Paris.
For four years she countered successive tumors with unimaginable fortitude and determination, mastering the management of chemotherapy, radiation and an onerous regimen of procedures, scans, tests and medications. She became a true expert, profoundly knowledgeable of her body, and articulate about her health and her needs. To affirm how exceptional she was, she was the youngest female to receive the title of Honorary Chief Petty Officer Soraya Moghaddam.
Soraya was a child of courage, charm, compassion and character. She was a natural athlete, loved drawing, singing and dancing. She had a wicked sense of humor that drew on her deep insight into people’s character. Simply put, she was fun to be with and sassy. Fluent in the language of love, Soraya brought people of all ages, beliefs, cultures and traditions into her ever-growing circle of support.
Soraya is forever ingrained in the hearts of her loving sister, beloved parents and extended family as well as the thousands of friends who say “We Love Soraya”.
Bravo Funeral Home has been entrusted with the funeral arrangements.

Elmer Olin Lewis, Jr. - October 05, 1946 - February 27, 2024

Departed: 02/27/2024 (San Diego)
Obituary Preview: Beginnings
Elmer Olin Lewis, Jr. was born at home on October 5, 1946 in the town of Edwardsville Illinois. His father, Elmer Lewis, Sr., worked at Granite City Steel, his mother Vivian Rice worked in hospitality and design. Elmer grew up with his brothers Masun (Jeff) and Greg, and his sister Sherri. His parents divorced and remarried, and Elmer was later blessed with additional siblings (George, Leslie, Daryl, Kevin, Gary, Angie, Ronnie, and Jessie).
Elmer spent much of his childhood with his maternal grandparents, Henry and Alice Rice, on their small farm in Edwardsville. To those who knew Elmer, he spoke fondly and often about his time in that home, and about Granny and Grandpa Rice, attributing many of his core values to them. As a child, Elmer grew up playing, fishing, and hunting in the nearby forest and farmland with his brothers and his cousin, Roger, calling themselves the “Bayou Boys.” In high school, Elmer became passionate and skilled as a freestyle wrestler for the Edwardsville High School Tigers. Upon graduating from High School, Elmer enrolled in Southern Illinois University where he studied for 2 years; however he left the University in 1968 to enlist in the Navy to support the Vietnam War effort. Thus, Elmer continued a family tradition of veteran military service. Military & Career
Upon enlisting in the Navy, Elmer was stationed in San Diego, CA. It was his first time seeing the ocean and he immediately fell in love with “America’s Finest City.” Elmer first served as a yeoman and later joined the Beach Jumper Unit, where he became skilled at parachute-based entry of foreign shores. Elmer always spoke with pride about his Beach Jumper Training while stationed in Okinawa, Japan and at the Naval Amphibious Base on Coronado Island, San Diego. After completing his 4 year-term with the Navy, Elmer worked for San Diego Gas and Electric; first as a ditch-digger, then an electric lineman, and eventually as an electric troubleman. His work was technical, dangerous, and grueling. He handled high-voltage lines and equipment while suspended 30 ft above the ground, was often on-call all hours of the night, and often worked long and irregular shifts to address power needs and emergencies. But he loved his work and was proud to serve his community, ensuring that families had power and that his city kept running. Elmer worked for SDGE for 42 years, retiring in 2012 with a flawless safety record. Family
In Dec 1968, shortly after moving to San Diego, Elmer was introduced to Sheila Mae Steele. He kissed her for the first time that very New Year's Eve. Over the next couple of years, their relationship continued to develop, and they were married on Dec 4, 1971. Together, they built a family that includes their 3 children, Ginger, David, and Levi (and their spouses Bill, Tiffany, and Corina); 6 grandchildren (Chris, Gabby, Jacki, David Jr., Christian, and Evie); and 2 great grandchildren (Fabian and Jaxon). Church
Elmer grew up attending the Wesley Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Edwardsville, Illinois which, to this day, prominently showcases the names of his great grandfather (Amos Julius Rice) on a cornerstone and his father (Elmer Olin Lewis) in a large stained glass window. However, as many do, Elmer grew away from the Church as a young man. While in San Diego, working for SDG&E, Elmer rode side by side with another lineman, Mike Weller. Mike was a born again Christian who began discussing the bible with Elmer at work. However, Elmer challenged Mike, and began studying the bible intently just to be able to debate different passages. Following one of these discussions, Mike noted that Elmer had developed an incredible knowledge of God’s word, but that he “knew enough to be bothered, but not enough to be blessed.” This touched Elmer and in the coming years, he turned his life toward Christ, was baptized at the First Christian Church of National City, then joined the Christian Church of Lemon Grove in 1980 where he remained and served as an elder throughout his adult life. Hobbies
To Elmer, discipline, duty, and priorities were paramount, including God, wife, family, church, and work. However, when responsibilities were met, Elmer loved to fully experience life through travel, dance, sports, fishing, and gardening. His travels took him all over the world, from New Zealand, to Europe, Alaska, and Mexico. He delighted in watching and playing sports including volleyball, softball, basketball, and football; and in dancing anywhere he could find good music, with his signature dance being the “Funky Chicken.” He engaged in all forms of fishing with friends and family, from giant marlin offshore of Cabo San Lucas, to small trout from the local lakes. He also loved to garden, planting a new pine tree in the backyard every Christmas and filling the yard with orchid cacti that he fondly called Epis. Elmer claimed that he liked plants that thrived on “abuse and neglect,” and yet he constructed elaborate irrigation networks to water them all, and would lovingly hand-pollinate individual flowers using his tiny paint brushes. Coda
Elmer was blessed with a long, healthy, and active life; with many noting his strength, agility, and handsome appearance into his 70s. For the past 15 months, however, Elmer struggled with advanced stages of Lewy body dementia and was cared for by the compassionate staff at Stellar (Memory) Care in San Diego. He was brought home from Stellar Care on February 17, 2024 and passed away 10 days later at 8:10 PM, February 27, 2024 at the age of 77 years. Elmer passed peacefully, in his home, surrounded by close friends and family as they sang the chorus of “In the Garden.” He is survived by his wife Sheila, their 3 children and their spouses, 6 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren. Elmer is now reunited with his mother, father, grandparents, brother Greg, sister Angie, son-in-law Jiri and many other friends and family who were waiting for him in Heaven. He said he’ll be looking forward to greeting each of us when we get there; he’ll likely be smiling in his suit and tie.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to notify friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a sense of closure and help to celebrate the life of the deceased.
