Bobby Carl Goodwin - August 18, 1934 - December 04, 2021

Departed: 12/04/2021 (Marion)
Obituary Preview: OBITUARY
Bobby Carl Goodwin, 87, died December 4 at his home on Lake of Egypt in southern Illinois.
Bob was born at his parents' home in Bay Village, Arkansas, on August 18, 1934. The son of Floyd Thomas Goodwin and Edath Earl Penna Goodwin. He grew up on Crowley's Ridge with his four brothers and three sisters. He moved to Chicago, where he worked for the Sunbeam Corporation and later other companies, driving big rigs through Chicago traffic until his retirement.
Bobby was a terror to the walleyes of Lake Michigan, where he spent many happy days wading into the cold water and casting his line. A lifelong fan of the Chicago Cubs, his extended family is grateful that he got to see - from the comfort of his recliner - the long-suffering Cubbies take home a World Series title.
Bob retired to Lake of Egypt, where his deck overlooked the sparkling waters of the lake on which he would often take his pontoon or bass boat to fish for smaller prey than in Chicago, but with every bit as much pleasure. In the Hunt's Resort community, he made many dear friends who helped make his final years some of the happiest of his life.
Bob was a good man of quiet faith and had a sly, dry sense of humor and a twinkle in his eye.
He was utterly devoted to his children and grandchildren, who will miss him tremendously.
Bob is survived by his daughters Kimberly Nicole Christ (Mark) and Rena Randell Goodwin, his sisters Carolyn Ann Pope and Betty Francis Brown (Reese), and his grandchildren Emily Ann and Cassandra Lee Christ and Abigail Augusta and Ian Kirkpatrick Lee, along with nieces and nephews extending into several generations.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Bryan Carl Goodwin, his brothers Thomas Eugene, Larry Wayne, Jimmy Ray and Jerry Gail Goodwin, his sister Edith Viola Bata, and his former wife and mother of his children Dorothy Lee Wright Goodwin.
Funeral arrangements are pending, but burial will be in Bay Village Cemetery, where he will rest beside his son among the lovely hills where he and his siblings played as children. Memorials may be made to the cause of your choice.
Binkley-Ross Funeral Home was entrusted with the arrangements under the direction of Joni Binkley-Ross. You may leave your condolences on the website.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's often published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and remember the deceased, while also providing important information to those who may want to attend the funeral or send condolences. They can also be a valuable tool for genealogists and historians, as they provide a record of a person's life and legacy.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service, such as the date, time, and location.

Who writes an obituary?

Obituaries are usually written by family members or close friends of the deceased, although some funeral homes or online obituary platforms may offer writing services. In some cases, a professional writer or journalist may be hired to write the obituary.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Typically, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Longer obituaries may be more suitable for online platforms or memorial websites.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a nice way to personalize the tribute and help readers visualize the person being remembered.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and guidelines. You may need to provide the written obituary, along with any photos or other materials, by email or through an online portal.

What is the cost of publishing an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication, word count, and any additional features such as photos or special layouts. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to $500 or more for a traditional newspaper obituary.

Can I publish an obituary online for free?

Can I make changes to an obituary after it's been published?

It may be possible to make changes to an obituary after it's been published, but this depends on the publication's policies and procedures. Be prepared to provide corrections or updates in writing, and allow time for them to be processed.

What if I find an error in a published obituary?

If you find an error in a published obituary, contact the publication's obituary department immediately to report the mistake. They will work with you to correct the error and republish the revised obituary.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

How do I ensure my wishes are respected when writing my own obituary?

Make sure to share your written obituary with trusted family members or friends, along with any specific instructions or preferences for its publication. Consider including this information in your estate planning documents as well.

What is a death notice versus an obituary?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, typically including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary provides more detailed information about the person's life and legacy.

Can I include humor or personal anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! Obituaries don't have to be somber or formal. Including humor or personal anecdotes can help capture the personality and spirit of the deceased.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If you're unsure about including sensitive information such as cause of death or personal struggles in an obituary, consider consulting with family members or friends who were close to the deceased. Remember that honesty is important, but tact and discretion are equally essential.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial funds in an obituary?

Yes! Many families choose to include information about charitable donations or memorial funds in lieu of flowers. This can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased while supporting a worthy cause.

How do I preserve an online obituary over time?

If you're concerned about an online obituary disappearing over time due to website closures or changes, consider printing out a copy or saving it digitally. You can also create a permanent online memorial through services like Findagrave or Legacy.com.
