Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly is an obituary?

An obituary is a written announcement of a person's death, often found in newspapers and online publications. It typically includes a brief account of the deceased's life, details about their family members, information on upcoming funeral or memorial services, and can sometimes include a personal message or a reflection on their life.

Who is responsible for writing an obituary?

Obituaries can be written by family members, friends, or sometimes by staff at a funeral home. In the case of notable individuals, journalists may write an obituary in advance of their death.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

An obituary is a detailed tribute that includes biographical information and personal details, whereas a death notice is a simpler statement of death. Death notices may include only basic information such as the individual's name, dates of birth and death, and service details without much elaboration.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary, but it typically ranges from a few sentences for a brief death notice to several hundred words for a comprehensive obituary. The length often depends on the medium it's being published in and the life story of the deceased.

What are the key elements to include in an obituary?

An obituary usually includes the deceased’s full name, date of birth, date of death, a summary of their life story, surviving family members, details about the funeral or memorial service, and any requested charitable donations in lieu of flowers.

Is it necessary to publish an obituary?

While it's not a legal requirement to publish an obituary, many choose to do so as a way to honor the deceased and inform the community of their passing and related services.

Can an obituary be published online?

Yes, obituaries can be published online on various platforms, including social media, online newspapers, or memorial websites. Online obituaries may allow for additional interactive elements such as photo galleries and guestbooks for condolences.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

Costs can vary widely depending on the publication and length of the obituary. Some newspapers charge by the word or by line, while online publications or funeral homes may offer free or fixed-price options.

What should you avoid including in an obituary?

You should avoid including overly personal or sensitive information such as the cause of death if it is private, financial information, or anything that may compromise the privacy and security of the family.

Can you include a photo with an obituary?

Yes, many obituaries feature a photograph of the deceased. This is often a recent portrait or a photo that captures a significant time in their life. Be sure to choose a quality image that honors the memory of the individual.

Is it appropriate to add a quote or a poem to an obituary?

Including a meaningful quote, excerpt, or poem can personalize an obituary and highlight the beliefs or character of the deceased. Select something that is significant to the individual or their family.

What if I can't fit all the information I want into an obituary?

If space or cost constraints limit the length of your obituary, focus on the most important information. You can also create a longer, more detailed version for online platforms or for the funeral service handouts.

Can an obituary be humorous?

While obituaries are traditionally solemn, some families choose a lighter or even humorous tone to reflect the personality of the deceased. It's important to respect the feelings of all who knew the person when deciding on the tone.

How do I start writing an obituary?

Begin by collecting the factual information needed, such as dates of birth and death, family members, etc. Then, reflect on what made the person unique, gather anecdotes or milestones from their life, and consider how they would like to be remembered.

Should family disputes or family estrangement be mentioned in an obituary?

It is generally advised to focus on the positive aspects of the deceased individual's life and to avoid mentioning family disputes or estrangements. The obituary should serve as a unifying message that pays respect to the person who has passed.

Are there any religious or cultural considerations to keep in mind when writing an obituary?

Certain religions and cultures have specific traditions or customs associated with death and mourning, which can be reflected in an obituary. It is respectful to consider and incorporate these traditions when relevant.

What should I do if I discover a mistake in an obituary I've already published?

If you find an error in an obituary after publication, contact the publication as soon as possible to correct it. Most places will be understanding and can help you amend the online or print version.

How quickly after a death should an obituary be published?

Obituaries are typically published soon after death, often within a few days. This allows enough time for the deceased's community to be informed, especially if details about the memorial service are included and the service is imminent.

Can an obituary be updated after it's published?

Updating a print obituary can be challenging due to publication schedules. However, online obituaries can usually be updated quite easily. Check with the platform or publication for their specific policies on updates.

How can I make an obituary more personal?

To personalize an obituary, include specific stories, achievements, hobbies, or interests that were important to the deceased. Sharing their passions, sense of humor, or values can help capture the essence of their personality.

What should I do if my family disagrees on the content of an obituary?

If there is disagreement on the content of an obituary, it's essential to communicate openly and aim for a compromise that respects both the deceased's memory and the feelings of all family members. Sometimes, a neutral third party like a funeral director can offer guidance.
