Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice of a person's death, commonly published in a newspaper or online. It includes a brief summary of the deceased individual's life, information about their family, the funeral or memorial arrangements, and sometimes an invitation to participate in commemorating the deceased.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

An obituary is generally a more detailed account of a person's life and is often written in a narrative style. It may include the person's achievements, legacy, and personal anecdotes. In contrast, a death notice is a paid announcement that is typically concise, listing only the bare essentials such as the person's name, dates of birth and death, family members, and details of any services.

How do I write an obituary?

Writing an obituary involves gathering key details about the deceased, such as their full name, age, birthplace, and significant life events. Include a summary of their personal and professional life, information about surviving family members, and details of any services or memorials. If desired, add a brief reflection on their character and impact on others.

Who is responsible for writing an obituary?

Traditionally, family members are responsible for writing an obituary, but in some cases, close friends, colleagues, or even the funeral home may assist with or take on the task.

When should an obituary be published?

An obituary is typically published several days before the funeral or memorial service to allow time for the deceased's acquaintances to make arrangements to attend, or simply to pay their respects.

Where are obituaries published?

Obituaries can be published in local or national newspapers, online memorial sites, funeral home websites, social media, and community bulletin boards.

What information is included in an obituary?

Is it necessary to publish an obituary?

While not legally required, publishing an obituary is a common way to inform friends, family, and the community about a person's passing and to celebrate their life.

How can I inform people of a death without an obituary?

Besides an obituary, you can inform people of a death through personal phone calls, emails, social media posts, or word of mouth. Additionally, the funeral home may provide an online guestbook to share the information.

Are obituaries free to publish?

Publishing an obituary in a newspaper typically incurs a charge based on the length of the obituary and any included photographs. Online postings may be free, especially on social media or certain memorial sites.

How long is a typical obituary?

The length of an obituary can vary greatly, from a few sentences to a lengthy narrative. Newspaper obituaries are often shorter due to space limitations and associated costs, while online obituaries might be longer and more detailed.

Can an obituary be edited after publication?

In print, once an obituary has been published, it cannot be edited. Online obituaries, however, can often be updated or edited by the person who posted them or by contacting the website administrator.

What if there is a mistake in an obituary?

If a mistake is discovered in an obituary, contact the newspaper or website to ask about publishing a correction. For newspapers, there may be a brief window of time to correct the error for future editions.

Can we include a photograph in an obituary?

Yes, most newspapers and online memorial sites allow the inclusion of a photograph with an obituary, though newspapers may charge extra for this service.

How can I ensure the obituary honors the deceased's wishes?

If possible, discuss the obituary with the individual prior to their passing, or reference any instructions they may have left behind. Consider their values, the way they lived their life, and how they would like to be remembered when crafting the obituary.

What is an appropriate tone for an obituary?

The tone of an obituary should be respectful and reflective of the deceased's personality. It can range from formal and somber to more personal and lighthearted, depending on their nature and the wishes of the family.

Can an obituary be too personal or too detailed?

Although an obituary is a personal tribute, it's important to balance intimacy with respect for the deceased's privacy. Avoid including overly sensitive personal details or information that the family prefers to keep private.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

It’s essential to be thoughtful when dealing with sensitive topics such as cause of death. Some families choose to be open about it, while others prefer to keep it private. Ensure you respect the deceased's and their family's wishes, and when in doubt, opt for general statements or omit the information.

Is it necessary to mention the cause of death?

No, it is not necessary to mention the cause of death in an obituary. The decision should be based on the family's comfort level and preference.

What should we do if we cannot afford to publish an obituary?

If the cost of publishing an obituary is a concern, consider free alternatives such as online memorial sites, social media platforms, or community organizations. You might also ask the funeral home if they can post the obituary on their website at no cost.

How can friends and acquaintances contribute to an obituary?

Friends and acquaintances can share memories, photographs, and messages, with permission, on online obituaries or memorial pages. Some families also welcome contributions to be included in the written obituary itself.
