Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a published notice of a person's death, typically including a brief biography, details about the funeral or memorial services, and information about the deceased's family. Its purpose is to inform the community of the person's passing and to celebrate and acknowledge their life.

Who writes obituaries?

Obituaries can be written by family members, friends, or the funeral home handling the services. In some cases, individuals may even write their own obituaries in advance as part of their end-of-life planning.

Where are obituaries published?

Obituaries are commonly published in local newspapers, on funeral home websites, and on dedicated online obituary platforms. Some may also appear in professional journals or organizational newsletters, depending on the deceased's involvement in particular communities.

Is there a difference between an obituary and a death notice?

Yes, there is a distinction. A death notice is typically a shorter, paid announcement that simply states the fact of a person's death, along with funeral service information. An obituary is generally more detailed and includes biographical information and personal tributes.

How long after a death is an obituary published?

The timing for publishing an obituary varies but is usually within a week of the death. This allows time to inform the public of the funeral or memorial service details and to enable friends and family to make necessary arrangements to attend.

Can an obituary be published without a death certificate?

While a death certificate is an official record of death, it is not typically required to publish an obituary. Newspapers and other publishing services may have different verification protocols to confirm the death before publication.

What details are included in an obituary?

A standard obituary often includes the person's full name, date of birth and death, a list of surviving family members, a brief account of their life and achievements, details of the funeral or memorial services, and options for sending condolences or donations in their memory.

Can I add a photograph to an obituary?

Yes, many obituaries include a photograph of the deceased. The choice of photo can be a recent picture or one from earlier in life, and should reflect how the family would like the individual to be remembered.

What should I do if I find errors in an obituary?

If you find errors in an obituary, you should contact the publisher or the funeral home responsible for the notice as soon as possible. Corrections can usually be made in future editions or online postings, depending on where it was published.

Is there a standard length for an obituary?

There is no standard length for an obituary; it can vary from a few sentences to a full column or more. The length may depend on the preference of the family, the life story of the deceased, or the cost and space limitations imposed by newspapers and other publication services.

How do I begin writing an obituary?

Begin with the full name of the deceased, their age, and the date and place of death. Proceed with a summary of their life, including major life events, career accomplishments, hobbies, or contributions to the community, and conclude with details of the funeral services and any special messages from the family.

What tone is appropriate for an obituary?

The tone of an obituary should be respectful and honor the life of the deceased. It can range from formal and straightforward to personal and affectionate, depending on the wishes of the family and the character of the deceased.

Are there guidelines on what to avoid in an obituary?

It is advisable to avoid including overly personal or sensitive information, such as the exact cause of death, financial or legal issues, or family disputes. Focus on celebrating the life and accomplishments of the deceased.

How can I personalize an obituary?

Personalize an obituary by mentioning the deceased's passions, quirks, favorite sayings, or anecdotes that encapsulate their personality. Highlight their relationships, charitable work, or the impact they had on others to give a fuller picture of who they were.

Is it necessary to mention the cause of death in an obituary?

Including the cause of death is not necessary and is at the discretion of the family. Some families choose to share this information, especially if it relates to a larger cause or awareness campaign, while others prefer to keep such details private.

Can I include information about memorial donations in an obituary?

Yes, it is common to include details about preferred charities or foundations for memorial donations in lieu of flowers. This information provides a way for others to honor the deceased and support a cause that was important to them.

What should I consider when choosing a photo for an obituary?

Consider selecting a photo that depicts the deceased in a way that family and friends will fondly remember, whether it be a formal portrait or a candid shot that captures their spirit. The photo should be clear and of high quality to reproduce well in print or online.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or website?

Contact the newspaper or visit the website to find submission guidelines, which can vary. Some may accept obituaries via email, through an online form, or in person. Be prepared to provide the text, photo, and possibly proof of death if required by the publication.

What is an appropriate way to respond to condolences received from an obituary?

Responses to condolences can be expressed through personalized thank you cards, emails, or phone calls. Some families may choose to acknowledge the support publicly at the funeral service or in a follow-up message or post.

Can I update an obituary after it has been published?

Updating an obituary after publication may be possible, especially in online formats. Contact the publisher to inquire about making revisions. For printed obituaries, a correction or additional notice might be published in a subsequent issue.

Is it possible to write and submit an obituary for someone who has no surviving relatives?

Yes, friends, caregivers, or even community members can write and submit an obituary for someone without surviving relatives. This final gesture honors the person's life and informs the community of their passing.
