Ruth Hertha Timm - October 06, 1931 - December 29, 2021

Departed: 12/29/2021 (Alpena)
Obituary Preview: Ruth Hertha Timm (Mom, Ruth, Grandma Timm or Grandma Ruth), passed away peacefully in her home in Ossineke on Wednesday, December 29, 2021. In her last days she was lovingly surrounded by her children, family, and many wonderful friends.
Ruth was born to the late Robert and Hertha (Tessmer) Abend on October 6, 1931, in Pontiac Michigan. As the oldest with four brothers, she was raised in a home filled with a strong German work ethic and a devout Lutheran faith. Ruth was industrious, enjoyed working and had several jobs early in life until becoming a clerk for the U.S. Postal Service where she retired after 31 years. She also was a very involved member of Hope Lutheran Church and over the years sang in the choir and was a chairperson/member of the women’s group just to name a few. She spent countless hours prepping and cleaning thousands of jars over the years that supported making the wonderful food sold at Hope’s Annual Fall Bazaar. At home she cooked and baked not only for her family but for many friends and acquaintances. Ruth raised her two children in her home in Ossineke where she lived for over 61 years.
Surviving her are son Mark (Tammy) Timm of Novi, and daughter Jill (Kim) Olsen of Ossineke who both had the great fortune of having a mother that truly set an example in so many ways. She had a deep love for family and cherished spending time with them visiting over meals, playing games, and occasionally having a joke up her sleeve. She was a giving person and would occasionally slip her grandchildren a few bucks or send them home with a jar of her special strawberry jam. Surviving her are grandchildren Katie (Tim) Lee, Ashley (Andy) Geib, Jeffery (Meghan) Olsen, Brian (fiancée Marie) Timm and Eric Timm as well as her step-grandchildren Eric (Megan) LaCross and Jon LaCross. When Grandma saw them, her eyes would light up, she would reach out for a hug and call them by her favorite nickname. She was also blessed with five great grandchildren and two great step-grandchildren whose cheeks were never missed with a kiss when Grandma was near. The beautiful children that brightened her day and blessed her life are Alivia and Alexia Lee, Whittaker and Beau Olsen, Emersyn Geib and Ashlyn and Cameron LaCross.
Ruth is survived by her brothers William (Bonnie) Abend, Donald (Sandy) Abend, and David (Dava) Abend, sister-in-law Shirley Abend and stepbrother Jack (Karen) Johnson. She was preceded in death by her parents Robert and Hertha, stepfather John Johnson, brother Robert Abend, and her companion of many years James Gonyea.
Ruth was a very organized and ambitious person that was reflected in her home and in all the activities she tracked and completed in her personal and congregational life. Throughout her life she expressed a deep thoughtfulness for others that was truly the essence of who she was. One remarkable way she did this was through the special notes that she sent to hundreds of people that in some way touched her life. Whether it was someone celebrating a special occasion, to convey warm and caring thought or to share her gratitude, she always put others first and loved to brighten someone’s day.
With Ruth’s strong faith and love for the Lord, the family has great peace in knowing that now she is resting and rejoicing in his presence.
Visitation will take place Saturday, January 8, 2022, at Hope Lutheran Church from 10 a.m. until the funeral service at 1 p.m. with Rev. Herb Kitzman officiating. Arrangements have been made by the Bannan Funeral Home. Streaming will be available at www.bannanfuneralhome.com. Interment:  Hope Cemetery Memorials:  Build Hope or Hospice of Michigan

James Oliver Nye - December 22, 1943 - December 18, 2021

Departed: 12/18/2021 (Alpena)
Obituary Preview: Jim Nye, Dad, James O. Nye, Papa, or the (self-proclaimed) Ole Buzzard…  Whatever name you knew him by, if you knew him, you were truly blessed.  Jim was dedicated to his family.  He loved his wife, his kids, and his grands with his whole heart.  Jim was kind and generous, honest and hard-working, motivated and a great teacher, artistic and wise.  He was an expert in all things related to masonry and concrete and he loved sharing his knowledge and teaching others about his craft. There are many block layers, brick layers, and cement masons who learned the craft from this master. He loved to point out homes and businesses he had a part in creating. One job he was proudest of was Alpena’s APLEX.
Anyone who knew Jim can tell you about his work ethic - second to none.  In addition to being a mason contractor for 60+ years, Jim also spent the last 20+ years serving as Building Inspector, Zoning Administrator, and Code Official for multiple townships in Alpena County.  And just to be sure he kept his days full; he also raised several beef cattle on his farm in Hubbard Lake.  It wasn’t unusual to find him leaning on the fence talking to the cows.
Jim enjoyed hunting and fishing as well as traveling.  He often combined these activities, traveling to Canada, Alaska, and “out West” to hunt caribou, mule deer, moose, bears and fishing in the rivers in Alaska. His favorite place to hunt though was right here in Hubbard Lake.  Being the generous man he was, he was known to share his property and hunting land with family and close friends, all of whom were able to take game many times.
He also loved traveling with his wife Arlene.  Over the nearly 60 years of their marriage, their travels took them to many states, including Alaska, Hawaii, Florida, and Nevada, to name a few, as well as trips Jamaica and the Bahamas. They enjoyed so many adventures together!  In recent years, they’ve spent a few months each winter in a small house they renovated together in Florida. Going there had become something he came to look forward to each year.
Jim was born in December 1943 to the late James H. and Eva Mae (Wilson) Nye. He was the third of ten children, the eldest boy.  Jim married his lifetime love, Nona Arlene Linton on September 8, 1962. Together they had three children, James D. (Michele) Nye, Cindy (Robert) Besaw, and Linda (David) Schalkofske.  They were blessed with seven grandchildren Autumn (Matt )Bellmore, Andrew (Dana) Nye, Kaitlin (Codie) Braun, Brooke (Cory) Fisher, Kira (Stephen) Nelson, Becca (Timothy) Schalkofske-Fee, Nicholas Schalkofske; nine beautiful, sweet great-grandchildren, Cole, Tucker, Ainsley, Olivia, Jack, Caiden, Ellie, Teddy, Leo; five siblings, Barbara (Ron) Linton, Carol (Mike) Doktor, Frank (Mary) Nye, John (Debbie) Nye, Joe Nye; sister-in-law, Barbara Nye and brother-in-law, Bill Wisniewski.
Jim was preceded in death by an infant sister, Gloria; sister, Dorothy Wisniewski and three brothers, Bill Nye, Gene Nye and Charles Nye.
Jim passed away on December 18, 2021, with his family at his side, after a battle with Covid-19. He will be sorely missed by his wife, his kids and grandkids, and so many more.  Your continued prayer for our family is greatly appreciated.

Gloria Jeanne Lumsden - October 01, 1955 - December 18, 2021

Departed: 12/18/2021 (Alpena)
Obituary Preview: Gloria Jeanne Lumsden was a witty, vivacious, loving, and kind grandmother, wife, mother, aunt, sister, and friend. She approached life with fire, determination, laughter, and not an insignificant amount of sass. Her short battle with cancer was no different. She passed peacefully at her home, if too quickly, on December 18, 2021, at age 66. The world became a little brighter when she was born to the late Norman and Louise (Carr) Brown on October 1, 1955. She married Howard Lumsden and together had two children: Nick and Adam. For much of her career she worked at Alpena General Hospital where she made many friends and improved more than a few lives. But she is better known for her incredible craftsmanship - whether cross-stitching, crocheting, planting flowers, or working her special magic in the kitchen. None would leave her kitchen with an empty belly or without a tasty treat to go. Gloria loved to give gifts with a personal touch, often created by her for those special moments in the lives of the people she loved. Each one truly one of a kind. And she had a talent in making others laugh, a gift she often shared with a joke, a prank, or her infectious laughter. Her personal mantra was "Life Is Good" and she lived it. She lived to spend time with her grandchildren, Isabelle, George, and Oliver, and the many grandpuppies she adored.
She is survived by her husband, Howard; sons, Nick (Jennifer) Lumsden, Adam (Stephanie) Lumsden; grandchildren, Isabelle, George, and Oliver; siblings, Pat (Neil) MacArthur, Margaret Langoni, Jim (Rhonda) Brown; sister, Ann Brown; so many cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and adopted family, all to whom she was most affectionately known as "Aunt Gloria".
Gloria was preceded in death by her siblings Joyce (Arnie) Bartz, Janet Brown, Gary (Mary Ann) Brown; and a brother-in-law, Donald Langoni.
She loved the phrase "It's laugh or cry time, you choose." Join us as we choose to celebrate her life and her going home with fond memories and laughter she can hear all the way in heaven. Her celebration will take place at Long Rapids First Congregational Church on Tuesday, December 28, 2021, at 1 p.m. with sharing and fellowship to follow. Arrangements have been handled by the Bannan Funeral Home. Inurnment: Long Rapids Township Cemetery

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a notice that announces the death of a person, typically published in newspapers and on online platforms. It details the deceased's name, age, significant life events, family members, and information about the funeral or memorial service.

How is an obituary different from a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, often including only the name, date of death, and time and place of the funeral or memorial service. In contrast, an obituary is more detailed and includes a biography of the deceased, outlining their life, accomplishments, and surviving relatives.

Who writes an obituary?

Obituaries can be written by family members, close friends, funeral home staff, or even the individuals themselves before they pass away. Professional writers or journalists may also be entrusted with this task.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

An obituary commonly includes the person's full name, age, date and place of birth, date and place of death, a summary of their personal and professional life, information about their family, funeral or memorial service details, special accomplishments, and sometimes a photo.

How do you begin writing an obituary?

Start by collecting the factual information such as full name, dates, and family details. Then, write a draft that includes a brief life history, their significant relationships, career accomplishments, hobbies, and any funeral or memorial service details. Include personal anecdotes or memories to add a heartfelt touch.

Is there a standard length for an obituary?

There's no standard length for an obituary; it can be brief or quite detailed. However, it's important to consider the publication's space limitations and potential cost if it's being published in a newspaper.

There are no legal requirements for publishing an obituary, as it is not an official legal document. Nonetheless, accuracy is essential when stating facts such as dates and name spellings.

Can an obituary be published after the funeral?

Yes, an obituary can be published after the funeral, especially if it serves to reach a wider audience who may have known the deceased. This can be a way to share a more comprehensive account of the person's life once immediate family have been notified.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

Costs can vary widely depending on the publication, the length of the obituary, and whether a photograph is included. Some online platforms allow for free postings, while newspapers typically charge by word or line.

Can obituaries be published online?

Yes, many websites and online memorial platforms specialize in posting obituaries. This can be a cost-effective and far-reaching alternative to traditional newspaper obituaries.

What if I make a mistake in an obituary?

If a mistake is made, it's often possible to correct it in an online posting immediately. For print publications, a correction or retraction can typically be published in a subsequent issue.

Is a photo necessary for an obituary?

While a photo is not necessary, it adds a personal touch and makes the obituary more impactful for readers who may have known the person in life.

How can an obituary be personalized?

An obituary can be personalized by including unique anecdotes, quotes, poems, and information about hobbies or passions. Focus on what made the person special and include memories that highlight their personality and life's impact.

Should an obituary include the cause of death?

Including the cause of death is entirely at the discretion of the family. It is neither required nor expected. Some families choose to include it for transparency or to raise awareness about specific illnesses or issues.

What should be considered when posting an obituary online?

When posting online, consider privacy concerns, the longevity of the post, and the potential audience reach. Ensure that the platform is reputable and respectful of the deceased and their family.

Can you mention donations in an obituary?

Yes, it is common to include a request for donations in lieu of flowers to a particular charity or cause that was important to the deceased. Make sure to provide clear instructions for making a donation.

What is the best way to ensure accuracy in an obituary?

To ensure accuracy, double-check all facts with close family members or other reliable sources. Proofread the obituary multiple times and, if possible, have someone else review it before publication.

How soon after death should an obituary be published?

Obituaries are typically published within a week of the person's passing, allowing enough time to inform friends and extended family about the funeral or memorial service details.

Can friends and extended family contribute to writing an obituary?

Certainly. Involving friends and extended family can provide a richer, more diverse representation of the deceased's life and impact on their community.

How can the deceased's personality be reflected in an obituary?

To reflect the deceased's personality, focus on their likes, dislikes, sense of humor, life philosophy, and the qualities and achievements they were most proud of. Use a tone and language that truly represent who they were.

What if the deceased requested no obituary?

If the deceased expressly requested no obituary, their wishes should generally be respected. However, consider if there might be a compromise that allows for an acknowledgment of their life in a respectful and non-public way.
