Deborah Kay Jenks - October 28, 1970 - June 15, 2023

Departed: 06/15/2023 (Roswell)
Obituary Preview: Deborah Kay Jenks, 52, one of God’s earthly angels was called to her rest on June 15, 2023, surrounded by family. Debi was born on October 28, 1970, in Atlanta, Georgia to Keith Surles and was raised by Keith and Rita Surles. She was a loving wife, mother, sister, daughter, aunt, cousin, friend, and her most favorite title was Mamie.
Debi met the love of her life, Roman Jenks, on August 31, 1991, when they were both being designated drivers. “These Arms are Mine” was playing on the juke box and she saw her opportunity to reel him in. They danced and were inseparable since. They married a few months later on February 14, 1992, and the rest is history. Debi was a stay-at-home mother and spent her life making sure that both her husband and her boys were always taken care of. She loved to read, which made her a human dictionary and an extreme game board competitor. She was always crocheting, cross stitching or sewing, either making things for around the house or gifts for others. She was a Candy Crush champion who loved hiking, nature, cooking, and was a true crime junkie. She was an avid Georgia Tech, Atlanta Braves, and Steelers fan who loved animals and in her own words, recently became a “crazy chicken lady.”  Debi was a beautiful, caring, selfless person who loved helping others. No matter what life threw at her she was always there with her head up and something positive to say. Words will never express the sorrow of our loss, but we will rejoice in Heaven’s gain of a beautiful soul. “She is clothed in Strength and Dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future.” Proverbs 31:25
Debi is proceeded in death by her Granny Libb, two grandfathers, Chris Robertson (her cousin/best friend), and Dan and Annie Jenks, who became a bonus mom and dad after she got married. She is survived by her parents Keith and Rita Surles; her devoted husband of 31 years, Roman Jenks; their two boys, Phillip and Benjamin, who were the light of her eyes; her daughters-in-law Janae and Ariel; her beloved grandchildren, Roman Oliver and Leira Joleen, who were absolutely perfect in her eyes; her sisters and brothers, Billy and Dana Sisk, Sandra and Sal Padilla, Karen and Mike Miller, Lucy and Armando Reyes, Rocky and Marsha Jenks, and James Jenks; an extremely large extended family, and numerous friends. She is and always will be missed by her family and friends who loved her so much.

For all the joy through all the years. Recall the closeness that was ours
A love a “sweet” as fragrant flowers. Don’t dwell on thoughts that cause you pain,
We’ll see each other once again. I am at peace…try to believe,
It was my time… I had to leave. But “What a view” I have from here,
I see your face; I feel you near. I follow you throughout the day,
You’re not alone along the way. And when God calls you... you will be
Right by my side… right here with me. Till then I’ll wait by Heaven’s door, We’ll be united… evermore!

So I try and send you signs so you know your not alone. Don’t feel guilty that you have life, life that was denied to me,

Then I’ll know with each breath you take you’ll be taking one for me.

James Thomas Young - July 13, 1950 - May 24, 2023

Departed: 05/24/2023 (Roswell)
Obituary Preview: James Thomas Young
James Thomas Young, 72, of Roswell, NM passed away on May 24, 2023 in Roswell, NM. He was born on July 13, 1950 to George William Young and Dolores Gertrude Johnson Young in Chicago, Illinois.
Jim grew up in Chicago, IL, graduated from Marist High School then attended Illinois Institute of Technology on a co-op program working in the steel mills. He graduated in 1973 with a Bachelor of Science in Math. After graduation, he went to work at Continental Illinois National Bank as a programmer trainee. From 1973- 1978 he was able to achieve his goal of being a Senior Programmer for the Trust department.
During his time at Continental Bank, he met the love of his life, Betty Ellen Read. In September of 1975 she started working as a programmer trainee and Jim’s boss assigned him to mentor her in computer programming.  Jim and Betty got married on August 20, 1977 in Roswell, NM at First Presbyterian Church. They lived in Chicago for two more years before moving to Roswell in June 1979 after the biggest snowstorm Chicago had in years.
Jim started a computer company in Roswell as a service bureau servicing customers with accounting needs. In 1984, when personal computers (PCs) came out, he was instrumental in installing PCs in various customer’s offices. He was a computer guru who could solve anything that had to do with the operating system to the computer programs. He loved doing consulting work for various customers, and really enjoyed the process of solving his customer’s computer problems.
Jim was a very proud dad of his two children from the time they were born to the present. Andrew Thomas Young was the firstborn and Christine Read Young was the second born. He was a very loving father who adored his children. His favorite dad times were the midnight feedings with both children and the Sunday nap times during NFL games.
When his kids started soccer Jim became a volunteer coach. He proceeded to coach for over 20 years and got involved with refereeing for the Roswell Youth Soccer league, the middle school and high school soccer for both the boys and girls. He was never a soccer player himself, but he read many coaching books, watched how-to videos to teach the skills and referee books to make sure he was capable of making a good team.
He really enjoyed teaching his kids how to improve their soccer skills as well as their life skills. Even after his kids graduated high school, he continued coaching for about 2 years. However, he continued his refereeing hobby with middle school and high school soccer, as well as Roswell Youth Soccer. Jim was always flattered whenever his former players would see him, they would still call him coach. Those memories always brought a smile.
Jim was a devout Catholic and very good servant for his church. He was always called upon to be a lector, eucharistic minister, and participated as an altar server with Christine. He was happy to serve the Lord. Midnight mass on Christmas Eve was his favorite time of the year.
One of the biggest thrills in his lifetime was getting his motorcycle. His wife told him that he would never get a motorcycle, because his best friend’s wife, Shirley Gill, would not allow her husband to have a motorcycle. On Jim Gill’s 60th birthday, Shirley gave her hubby a motorcycle. To Jim Young’s delight he was honored that his wife broke down and allowed him to have a motorcycle. It was his joy to drive the motorcycle every day to work and around town running errands.
His favorite pastime included traveling with his wife and kids, especially going to the family cabin in Colorado. He loved snow skiing in the winter and photography trips in the mountains every summer.  Eventually he got a Jeep so he could get to places in the nearby mountains as he tried to capture the beauty of Colorado. He also loved attending OU and TCU football games every year in the Fall. He became a very dedicated fan of TCU football and, even more recently, TCU baseball. There were many phone calls with his daughter discussing the various sports of TCU.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Jim’s family started doing weekly chats to stay connected. He really enjoyed getting to talk with family and staying close with them even though they are all physically spread out across the country. He also continued his 20+ year lunch tradition (which turned into a biweekly tradition) with Jim Gill, his best friend. Instead of going to the restaurant, Jim Young would place a pick-up order and bring it over to Roswell Seed. Jim had recently gotten involved with Roswell Rotary and the Roswell Elk’s club. During his life his supported many charities including The Salvation Army foundation, 40 days for Life, the USO, Hillsdale College, and The Heritage Foundation
Last but not least, Jim and his wife Betty had a great marriage of 45 years. We worked as a team experiencing life’s joys and tribulations. We have been blessed with many gifts and give our thanks to the Lord.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, George and Dolores Young; his in laws Charlie and Jean Read, as well as his step mother-in-law Laura Sue Read; his brother William George Young. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Betty, his son Andrew, and his daughter Christine. He is survived by his sisters Dolores Cavanagh; Suzanne Gore and her husband Tom; Ellen Eichman; Joann Hajduch and her husband Michael; and Kathleen Young; his sister-in-law Carolyn Beall and her husband Tom; and brother-in-law James Read and his wife Mary. He is survived by his nieces and nephews including John Cavanagh, Jim Cavanagh, Jennifer Ives, Jade Young, Forest Young, Amber Young, Sonny Young, Sara Young, Tess Young, Kate Eichman, Kelsey Eichman, Kim Unruh, Mellissa Hajduch, Allison Hajduch, Kelly Canning, Matt Beall, Harrison Read, Hunter Read, and Leah Read.
Rosary Service will be Friday, July 7, 2023 at 6:00 pm at Ballard Funeral Home. Memorial Mass will be Saturday, July 8, 2023 at 10:00 am at St. Peters Catholic Church. He will be buried in the columbarium at St. Peters Catholic Church.  A Celebration of Life will be held at First Presbyterian Church following the funeral mass.

Joe Fatima Velasquez - May 02, 1964 - May 23, 2023

Departed: 05/23/2023 (Roswell)
Obituary Preview: Joe Fatima Velasquez (59) passed away quietly in his Las Cruces home on Tuesday, May 23, 2023.
Viewing will be held from 1:00 to 6:00 pm, Monday, June 5, 2023 at Ballard Funeral Home with a rosary to follow at 6:00 pm. Funeral mass will be held at 10:00 am, Tuesday, June 6, 2023 at St. Peters Catholic Church. Burial will follow at South Park Cemetery.
Joseph was born in Roswell, NM on May 2, 1964 to Joe Velasquez and the late Esperanza Kamees Velasquez. Many knew him as Baby Joe and as time passed, he preferred Joseph or Joe F. Joseph’s life began with a long list of physical barriers and a life expectancy of no more than 5 years. His first years would include many Dr’s visits. During one such visit, his parents were told they needed to accept his shortened lifespan, and the fact that he would be, in the Dr’s words, “retarded”. Physically he would struggle however mentally Joseph would prove that Dr. wrong!
At the age of 3, deaf, tube fed and unable to walk unassisted, he was already able to lace and tie his own shoes! Ability to do that at this age, another Dr. would state, “he might be a genius.” This statement proved to be true. As he aged, it became clear that he was a quick learner and definitely mechanically inclined! Many of us would half-jokingly say he was a mind reader. He was extremely intuitive and definitely had a sixth sense. Even with limited language skills, and very few family members who knew sign language, he seemed to know what you wanted or needed before you tried asking.
Joseph lived his life wanting to be a useful part of everyday life. He was blessed with family and friends who would provide him with that feeling of purpose and sense of normality. In his youth, he was taken in as a helper to many family businesses and at each, excelled in his abilities! He had the opportunity to work with his Grandpa Dave and Uncle Adan learning various body shop skills. He was meticulous in gathering the correct tools for various jobs and helping as needed. He also spent time with his Uncle Paul and Olivia Gonzales as a lock smith and key maker. He loved the responsibility of using the machinery to make keys and take care of problem locks.  He also worked at his Uncle Homers mechanic shop, working alongside his cousin Alex Sarli (Sandy) in the body shop which eventually also included a Tow Wrecker Service. He was so proud to show off his ability to run every piece of equipment and was gifted with a plaque naming him Vice-President.
He also enjoyed time with his Uncle Ryc and Diane Velasquez irrigating, mowing, helping with carpentry and feeding the animals. There, he would typically say he was hungry before leaving so that he could complete the day with a family meal. Finally, he enjoyed going to church and took pride in dressing up and being part of passing the collections basket at St Johns Church.
Josephs hobbies included riding the four-wheeler and being the neighborhood watchdog, playing on his Xbox, and face timing family members several times a day. He also loved caring for and acting as protector to younger family members, especially toddlers. On May 6th he celebrated what would be his final birthday and it was grand! Upon arriving in Roswell from Las Cruces, he opened the doors to his uncle Ryc and Diane’s barn and lit up seeing the beautiful decorations and many people he loved waiting inside. After greeting many with hugs, a few with lighthearted scolding’s, and a gentle nalgada or two, he quickly took the little ones for four-wheeler rides around the property he knew so well. While opening gifts he made sure pictures were taken and his iPad was videotaping. He loved the limelight and keeping record of every special occasion big or small! Our deepest thanks to Sandra Zamora and all who helped in organizing such a beautiful event! Thank you also to everyone who attended! The joy he showed on his special day was priceless! It meant more than you know!
Joseph’s immediate survivors include his father, Joe Velasquez; sisters Corina Reynaud and husband Richard Reynaud and Lorina Lucas and husband, Dr. Matthew Lucas; nieces Taylor Reynaud, and Hannah Reynaud and nephews Anthony Samario Jr., and Donovan Lucas.
Honored to serve as pallbearers are Alex Sarli, Homer Sarli, Adan Velasquez, Alfred Velasquez, Fermin Velasquez, and Ryc Velasquez. Our sincere gratitude to his aunt Martha Romero, who acted as second mom with many daily needs including home cooked meals and time away from home after his mother passed. Rick and Mary Ann Alvarado for countless opportunities to visit their home and making sure he could spend time with granddaughter, Emma Jade Acevedo. (They loved each other dearly) Loretta and Cecil Tomas for several trips away from home and a highlight visit to the Albuquerque Aquatic Center. Cruz Carrillo, Rosemary Lopez, Gloria Velasquez, Sandra Zamora, Alfred Velasquez, Fermin Velasquez, Jose Macias, Jeff Miller, and Rene’ Aymee’ for their help and compassion with any and all other needs, including many visits showing Joseph how much he was loved! We appreciate all who called to express condolences or shared their own special stories through social media. It has been heartwarming knowing how much he touched so many lives!

Blanche Stephens - February 24, 1919 - May 22, 2023

Departed: 05/22/2023 (Roswell)
Obituary Preview: Blanche Hortencia Ortega Stephens
I am Blanche Ortega Stephens, a pioneer of Roswell, New Mexico. I was born at 401 East Albuquerque Street on the East side of town. Due to illness of my mother we moved west of town to an area that was supposed to be out of town. Although our home was across from Missouri Avenue School, there were few homes nearby. Graduated from Roswell High School one of only three Spanish Students, the following September I was enrolled by my mother in Campbell Beauty Academy. After graduating from the Academy, I took the New Mexico Cosmetology Board examination and received my license. I can say I was really scared.
Married to Clifford Romero soon after graduation, our family grew with the additions of Yolanda and Clifford Jr. Due to living expenses and with a desire to have furniture, a car and to give my children a better opportunity I went to work. My first job in Cosmetology was at the Roswell Beauty Shop and it was difficult due to the fact Spanish people were just beginning to be hired in the beauty business. My boss, Mrs. Lizzie Porter, was a fine lady and saw no difference so I was given a good opportunity. Worked long hours because at that time the boss was the boss.
In 1952, in order to be close to my family, we built an extra room on to the house where I opened my beauty shop. I was lucky to have a nice car to mortgage in order to buy used beauty equipment. Fortunately, and with gratitude to them, my customers followed and helped me. My customers advised and were good to me.
My husband divorced me in 1964 and I was left with the debt of bills and the expense of establishing the Continental Coiffure Academy of Beauty. It was a very ‘strenuous time, and I was so grateful for all the support that Jackie and James Allen gave me. It was also very hard because the children had a difficult time adjusting to the change. I was lucky, with God's help, that I was able to educate my children. My son went to N.M.M.I. and my daughter to St. Joseph College in Albuquerque.
In 1968 I married Leon Stephens and thanks to this wonderful person who has stood beside me and helped me. We even took five children, during different years, to help them to complete their education and graduate: Tommy Philips, who has passed; Kate Morgan, living in Arizona; Richard Morgan, living in Roswell; and Ron Helms, who has passed and his brother Daryl Helm passed away. These children were a gift to us, and we were happy for their success. I joined the Cosmetology Association of Roswell, and over the years have worked hard with this organization, starting from the office of Trustee on to President of the Affiliate, Number 3 of Roswell.
I was appointed by Governor Simns to serve on the New Mexico State Board of Cosmetology. It was my duty to travel all over the State to inspect the Beauty shops, and to give and grade the State examinations. It was all quite an experience, especially the first examination I was to give. With no previous knowledge or experience as to the proper procedures I was left on my own to perform this function. I went to the State office requesting assistance only to be denied any and informed that it was all my responsibility. I asked the Custodian to help me and he did, but to compound the pressure we had an observer to oversee the examination to make sure it was given correctly. The exam was a success and an experience I never forgot. I can say one thing, when the situation appears to be difficult or against you, give it the very best of your abilities, it will work out.
Elected as a Trustee to New Mexico Cosmetology Association, I was immediately assigned to update and renew the By-Laws of the State Association. My service as Trustee lasted six years, I had also served two years as Historian, and one as Vice-President. In 1962 I was elected to a two-year term as President, this was repeated in 1986. I won the New Mexico Coiffure Guild Competition in Hairdressing and was honored to compete on the National level in Houston Texas. Even though I did not win, it was truly an experience to compete at the national level. President Joseph Weir, of the National Cosmetology, appointed me to serve on the regional Committee of the National Cosmetology Month which covered four States, Oklahoma, Texas, Colorado and New Mexico. We traveled to Oklahoma and Colorado to inform the membership of new ideas and to help the affiliates. This too was a great experience, we learned so much, met new friends, and by working together we became close which brought to the States mutual benefits.
I was honored by being elected by the National Cosmetology Association (N.C.A.) to serve on their Board. During my travels to the Board meetings, held in St Louis, Missouri, I had the opportunity to visit the N.C.A. office, where I learned how the business office was managed. It was interesting to see the Public Relation office, Shipping and Membership Departments, and how our cosmetology magazine was published: I feel very fortunate to have had this opportunity. Because of my experiences I feel at ease when I call the National office for information. My name is on a plaque at the N.C.A. office for the accomplishments that have been made’ New Mexico. In 1964 I built the Continental Coiffure Academy of Beauty, and trained students in Cosmetology. It was a rewarding education to see that our students received an education and were placed in employment in the Cosmetology business in Roswell and elsewhere. As part of our program, we trained the High School students that were in Decca to receive credit for their education. I sold the Academy in 1984, after running the school for twenty years. Even though the students would be missed, I recognized the effects of the chain schools, moving into our State, would have. A school ran by one individual required a lot of money, a problem that the chains did not have to deal with. During the days of my Academy, I also served on the National Accreditation for Cosmetology Schools. We accredited schools for Texas, Colorado, and Arizona, this was another exciting experience. The New Mexico Coiffure Guild is the committee which is the educator for the Cosmetology Association. It is responsible for providing educational, opportunities to the professional membership. I have served with the Guild as its Chairperson and as of May 1993, I was elected the Secretary, which consists of the duties to help the Chairperson to make her year a success, and to keep the minutes. We have several educational activities during the year which include: the State Trade Show, seminars, and the State
Conventions, which all required time and travel to various areas within New Mexico. In 1993 we have had two seminars in Roswell and one in Albuquerque. I have received the Leadership Cosmetology Award at the State and National levels. Competition against the other states is stiff, but it’s a special occasion at the National Convention.
June 1993 I was honored in having my picture and article in the American Hairdressers Magazine that is published every month. This magazine is issued to each member all over the United States. This helps to encourage the membership to receive recognition.
I have customers that have been with me for twenty-five years, who are now Senior Citizens. When they get sick, I help them especially if they have no family. One of my customers went to the Nursing Home, I helped her for five years. She never looked sick because her hair was well kept, and I also took her out for fresh air. I feel my customers have helped me by their loyalty and the opportunity they have given me to educate my children. I feel that my love for my profession was a gift.
In 1979 I was asked to run on the Citizen Ticket for City Council. It was very interesting to campaign, and especially when your opponent looks at you and nearly says "What are you doing here?" It possessed me to work hard, to spend much time campaigning and attending gatherings that the Citizen Ticket plus the opponents were to speak at. However, I felt like I was going down the drain when my opponent ruffled my feathers, but when it was my turn to speak, I was ready. In no time my speech out did his.
It was a thrill that the Citizen Ticket and I won. I was one of two women that ran for the position of City Council and won, we were the first women to achieve this accomplishment. The Mayor appointed me to be in charge of the Sanitation Dept. Committee, and place me on the Airport Committee. Serving on the Community Action Program, I helped the people whose homes needed repairs, windows, bathrooms, electricity, roofing etc. This was through Government Grants to the city specifically for this project. During this time, I also had the opportunity to help by being part of the advisors for the Water Rights to ensure that our city had water for future use. I always felt that this was an important project in which City Manager worked with me. It was an education to see the city government process at work. I had been a member of Altrusa International since 1977. During my term as Chairperson of the International Committee saw to it that children in Mexico received their education, clothing and Christmas presents. I served three years on this committee under three different presidents.
Also served on the local Community Committee, helped to provide gifts for young people for their Christmas, and helped with the Battered Woman Program. During the Home Show as an Altrusan I worked to raise funds for the club to help our community.
I was a member of St. Peter's Church and Chairperson of their Fund-Raising Committee. With a group of twelve members we organize the preparation, decoration, food, and games for the Mardi Gras. At the latest, held in February in 1993, we raised $6,000. I had helped with this fund raising for three years. At present time I had joined the Church Choir.
I served the second year on the Board of Lend-a-Hand. It is rewarding to see the different churches working together to raise funds for the poor. We worked with the Salvation Army, Community Action Program, Outreach Program, the Good Samaritan, and the Community Kitchen. This was also my second year on the Fund-Raising Committee.
As a member of The Friends of the Library I also served on the Board. We raised funds for the library to buy essential things which they need. We sold donated books to the public who take advantage of purchasing them at low fees. We also gave a Staff appreciation dinner. I was on my third year serving as President of Chaves County Democrat Woman, I was re-elected May 8, 1993. At the May 15, 1993, Democrat Convention dinner, I received a certificate of appreciation for helping President Clinton to be elected. 1993 - 1995
I was elected President for the Democrat Women of Chaves County for the third term. My term ended in May and then served as Treasurer for the Democrat Women.
During my term membership has increased with active members, I helped the Candidates, and attended the Democrat Convention in Albuquerque. Treasurer of the Roswell Affiliate of Cosmetology and worked hard to help our Association. Attended the National Cosmetology Association Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada. Assisted with Garage Sales to help Boys Ranch of New Mexico, and the Primary Health Care Center that will opened in Roswell.
As an Associate Member of the Primary Health Care Center, which opened in July, I had worked on this project for two years laying the Foundation, attending City Council Meetings, visiting with the Eastern New Mexico Medical Board and the County Commissioner to acquire help. Also attended the Legislation Session in January to visit with our Representatives to help us acquire financing for the building. In June we received $250,000 that was passed by the House and Senate and was signed by our Governor King. The building is equipped with medical equipment. Board member of the friends of the Library and while I was the Fund Raising chairman we searched to bring an Author to raise Funds and we also ordered Bags with a Picture of the Library on them.
Also, a member of Saint Peter's Church Choir and sang every Sunday at the 11:00 am Mass. During Lent we sang Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday for Holy Week. September Chaired the Dinner for Fund Raising Committee, and we raised $1,000. I was on the Board of Lend-a-Hand, which is composed of the Community Kitchen, Good Samaritan, Salvation Army, Out-Reach Program and Community Action Program. I was a Altrusa and serve on the Community Committee which meets the first Wednesday of each month at the different local Agencies to learn what they provide and of their needs. These agencies are Taboosa, Child Care Provides, Battered Women and University High School. We provided needed books for the School Library. To the Battered Women we helped with sheets, blankets, towels, and toys for the children. During the month of May we held the "Home Show" which was our big money project that provides the funds so we could help fill the needs. Lovely written by: Blanche Stephens

Betty Nell Miles - February 26, 1931 - May 20, 2023

Departed: 05/20/2023 (Roswell)
Obituary Preview: Betty Nell Miles
Lifelong Pecos Valley resident Betty Nell Miles of Hagerman, NM passed away on Saturday, May 20, 2023 at the age of 92. A Memorial Service is scheduled for 1:00 PM on Wednesday, May 31, 2023 at First Presbyterian Church, 201 West 5th Street, Dexter, NM. Betty Nell was born in Dexter on February 26, 1931, to Elmer Samuel Bible and Mary Baker Bible. She grew up in Dexter and graduated from DHS, then married the love of her life, Henry Leroy Miles in the spring of 1949. Together, they worked and raised their family in the same small town in which they had been bom. Betty Nell grew up in the “Little Grey Church” of Dexter and became a dedicated wife, mother, church and community member. A move to Hagerman only extended Betty Nell’s circle of love and service. She followed her parent’s lead, dedicating her time and talents to both the Hagerman and Dexter Presbyterian churches. From playing the organ, singing in the choir, teaching Sunday School, and rolling bandages to painting walls and cooking for church functions, Betty Nell exemplified a servant’s heart. There is no written record of how many concessions stands she manned or how many hours she spent supporting local youth through 4-H projects, county fairs, recitals and every kind of youth athletic activity that took place. She was well known for her willingness to share her thoughts with referees during the excitement of a game. As her children grew up, she became interested in Real Estate and helped many families find a new home in the valley. Her hard work as a realtor earned her the Realtor of the Year Award and she achieved multiyear Million Dollar Sales Club awards. Betty Nell truly enjoyed helping people and taught her children, grandchildren and great grands the value of hard work. Known to her family as Granny, she enjoyed the together times and was happiest when everyone showed up for Sunday morning pancakes. Her hobbies included gardening, sewing, raising chickens, and going to ballgames. No weed was safe if Granny had her hoe in hand. She counted herself lucky to have a group of friends that had known each other for more than 80 years. Sharing the bounty of her garden and eggs from her chickens was one of her greatest pleasures. She made the very best apple jelly and was heard to say many times, “I love life!”
Granny is survived by her son Don Miles (Nancy) of Dexter, NM, daughter Nelda Munoz (Rene) of Level- land, Texas, daughter in law Ann Miles (Ray, deceased) of Hagerman, NM, grandchildren Sarah Villalpando (Carlos) of Roswell, NM, Bryan Miles (Marybelle) of Artesia, NM, Elizabeth Grimm (Justin) of Peralta, NM, Andy Miles (Jessica) of Grapevine, Texas, Anna Chaney (Kyle) of Dexter, NM, Jill Craig (Nathaniel) of Soldatna, Alaska, Susan Sparks (Michael) of Lubbock, Texas, Matt Munoz (Ashley) of Austin, Texas, Travis Gray (Heidi) of Hagerman, NM and Trevor Gray (Katie) of Hagerman, NM. Wanda Brown - November 23, 1933 - May 01, 2023

Departed: 05/01/2023 (Roswell)
Obituary Preview: Wanda Florene Johnson Brown
My beautiful amazing Mom, left this world on May 6th,  6:00 pm. 2023 at the age of 89.  I had to let her go, and it broke my heart. It broke all of our hearts. Mom’s family was close by her side.
Mom (Wanda Florene Johnson Brown) was born on November 23, 1933, in Dexter NM...one of a set of twins. She attended Roswell High school for three years.  Mom and her family moved to California where she graduated from Polytechnic High School. Mom worked for Roswell Independent School District as a Film Librarian for many years. Mom loved her family beyond words and was so protective of each and every one of us. What can be said about a woman who was not only my mother, but a special “Auntie” to nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, second mom to some and a “Mama Wanda” to some…. not only Auntie to her family, but Auntie to kiddos who were of no relation. Little ones gravitated to her kind sole and heart.  Her next-door neighbor’s kids would come knocking on her door and wanting to visit. They would go straight to the room where she kept many books and toys for all. There were times I would walk into her living room with a room full of her nephews and little kids that I didn’t know! …but that was who she was.  Mom would put on her country western music…she loved the old classic country western … and dance in the dining room by herself or with all the kids…that was a hoot! Mom especially loved staying with her niece Cindy, and watching movies late into the night, visiting her best lifelong friend, Wanda (87 Years! Beat that!), and her husband Jim in Ruidoso, picking up Christine (lifelong friend) and riding around to their old stomping grounds; going to Craig and Doretta’s for dinner; and talking to Shirley (lifelong friend) for hours on the phone.  I would ask how she could talk that long on the phone to which she replied, “Shirley and I have things to say” ...so there you go!
My mom was my best friend, my light, actually my world. We were exceptionally close. A million words wouldn’t be enough to convey what she meant to me. The love that she gave me was immense, unfathomable really.  She always caught me when I fell, she was always on my side no matter what; taught me courage to stand up for myself;  gave me confidence and encouraged me to be whatever I wanted to be;  knew just how to soothe the pain of a broken heart; and when I was little I would stand on her feet when she was dancing with me...she said I would learn the steps and the beat a lot quicker; and my mom knew how to let loose and have fun, which we did!  We had many mother/daughter trips that have given me memories that will forever be in my heart and provide me with much needed comfort in the days to come. I could go on and on, but you get the picture.  My mother was this rare gem that just doesn’t come along very often….and I was so blessed to have her as my mom.
Mom met her soul mate and love of her life at a dance. He was tall and handsome and from the South with this slow talking southern drawl is what she said to me.  Now I have to share a story, of course…  So, mom sees this good look’in guy as told to me , walking across the dance floor towards her, but this other guy made it to her first and asked her to dance whom she turned down because Dad was right behind him to which her girl friend said, “I can’t believe you just did that…and mom replied I saw who I wanted to dance with, and they danced the night away! Not finished yet…So, mom went home that night and told her mom that she had met the man she was going to marry, and that’s what happened two years later! … who does that!?  Right!?  Soul mates that’s who…and lucky for me!  My mom and dad married on September 3, 1954.  They were married for 64 years, and had one daughter, that would be me (Dorothy).
My mom was especially close to her nieces and nephews, like a grandma to them, and they felt the same way.
Cindy Ruff, her niece...Auntie was like a second mother to me. She was always there, before my mom passed and long after. She is so missed. I am so grateful for the time I got to spend with her, especially these last few years. Peter Knudsen, her great nephew…” I think I can say this for all of us.  Besides my own mother, no one had a larger impact on my life.  For my whole life she was always there for me no questions asked. The older I’ve gotten I realize how rare and special that it is to have someone in your life that is always there for you, and unconditionally loves you. Even though she wasn’t my grandmother she was the best grandma anyone could ask for. I truly can’t put into words how much she has meant to me. The love she gave all of us and helping raise us all.  Giving us a safe place when we didn’t always have one, teaching us and showing us love every single day. She always felt like safety to me…like I knew I was always going to be OK no matter what because Auntie was always going to take care of me if something happened to me.  Auntie was an amazing person and I’ll always miss her. I hope she knew how much I loved her and how much she meant to me.”
Ashley Knudsen, great niece…Auntie was the heart of our family, our safe haven. She was the person we could go to when we were sad and hurting, and the person we could share our stories with…and how she loved visiting and being with us. Auntie taught us all to be better.  I’m so grateful that she was a part of my life. There is no other like her. Little Sean, great nephew...I miss when me and Auntie would lay on the couch and watch scary mysteries for hours.”
...and there you have It.  For those who knew and love her, all of these attributes are known, but for those who didn’t I just wanted all to know what a loving, giving, and remarkable human being she was. Mom will be missed beyond words.  Our world will never be the same, but her spirit will always be in our hearts. I know that she is with my Dad moving across that dance floor in the heavens to some good old country music.
Mom is survived by her only child, daughter Dorothy Tarter and her husband Steve who she thought the world of. This good husband of mine helped me take care of my mom and made her the best margaritas! Mom is also survived by a sister-in-law Betty (Bitty) Vergeson of Tallahassee, FL; brother-in-law Jim Brown (Peggy) of Lanette, AL; sister-in-law Olivia Brown of Opelika, AL; nieces Cindy Ruff, Melodye LeCroy (Braxton), Denise Vergeson, and Janice Brown; nephews David Papworth (Pauline), Gary Brown (Laura), Keith Vergeson, and Jon Vergeson (Melissa). Very Special Great nieces and Nephews Ashley Owsley (Jason), Chris (Audrey), Peter Knudsen (Diana)…. and last but not least her loving great-great Nephews and Nieces, Little Sean, Little Chris...(not so little anymore), Wyatt; Eric, Grayson, Liam, Jordi, Little David, Luke, Leah, Danielle, Jeremy, Maximus, Lorelei, Anakin, Padme, Elizabeth, and Scott.
Many thanks to Frontier Medical home healthcare nurses for all of their loving care and kindness. Rich, you’re the best! No other PT would do for mom. Thank-you Dr. Adajar for your care and compassion, and all that you did for my mom.  Many thanks to Sarah East (primary care). You always took such good care of my mom.  Mr. Garcia thank you for all that you have done for us over the years.
Cindy and Ashley... Iove you both so much. You both have given me your love, your support, and your shoulders to cry on.
Steve, you have helped me through this difficult ordeal.  You have shown my mom love, made her laugh, and helped me care for her.  I love you, Husband. Last but not least, my special Girlfriends, you know who you are!  You’ve helped me survive, put your arms around me, listened, brought me food and wine, and always there for me...and those who can’t be here are calling me, supporting me, and crying with me. I love you all!  Toni, you were instrumental in getting my mom into a very good rehab in Albuquerque, and then put me up for two weeks!  You know I love ya!

Departed: 04/20/2023 (Roswell)
Obituary Preview: Michael A. Lovings was born on December 30, 1953, in Corbin, Kentucky.  On April 20, 2023, he joined Editha’s World up in heaven.  Michael grew up in Kentucky and Indiana as a country boy.  From there he joined the United States Air Force right out of high school. Being in the Air Force was one of the best decisions he had made. He learned a trade of being an Aircraft Mechanic. His career as an A & P Mechanic has taken him to many countries and places others only dream about going to. One main country was to the Philippines where he was stationed at Clark Air Force base. Where the love of his life Editha P. Lovings chose him to be her husband. And they had their first daughter. Then after some traveling and moving around they started to settle here in the United States. Their world wasn’t complete until they had their second daughter. A wife and two daughters had officially completed his world and so much joy.
Moving around from different places from Indiana to Florida to even to Roswell and Clovis, New Mexico was always an adventure for him. The best job opportunity he enjoyed working at was with SNC (Sierra Nevada Corporation). He got the best of his favorite worlds. Working on airplanes and deploying. But he also got to spend a lot more time at home in Editha’s World. In 2020 the rest of the world crashed with everything going on. But also, Editha’s World crashed. And in 2021 he decided to retire to be more at home. But now we are in 2023, and he is happily reunited with his beloved wife. And we are here to celebrate them being together in heaven.
Michael leaves behind his beloved family, daughters Jerma P. Lovings and Jamilita P. Lovings; mother Ruth Lovings; brothers Roger Lovings and wife Darlene, Frank Lovings and wife Jackie; sister Cathy Parker; along with nieces, nephew, and cousins; cousin Esther Morrison and husband; second family Jorge and Carmen Rodriguez and kids; Co-workers who become friends over the years; and friends he has met along his travels and has kept in touch through the years. Obituaries can appear in newspapers, online, or in other publications.

Who writes obituaries?

Obituaries are often written by family members or close friends but can also be written by funeral directors or professional obituary writers. Sometimes, individuals pre-write their obituaries to include specific details they want to be remembered for.

What information is included in an obituary?

An obituary typically includes the decedent's full name, date of birth and death, a summary of their life’s milestones, details about family members, the time and place of the funeral or memorial service, and any charitable donation requests in lieu of flowers.

Why publish an obituary?

Publishing an obituary serves as a formal way to notify a community of someone’s passing, celebrate their life, and inform people about service arrangements. It also provides a historical record for future generations and offers closure to grieving families.

Is there a difference between an obituary and a death notice?

Yes, there is a difference. A death notice is typically a shorter, more factual notice of someone’s death, including basic information like the name, date of death, and the time and place of any services. An obituary is more detailed and often includes a personal narrative of the decedent's life and accomplishments.

How long is an obituary?

The length of an obituary can vary significantly. It may range from a few sentences in a death notice to a lengthy and detailed account in a full obituary. The average length is typically around 200-300 words.

Can I include a photo with an obituary?

Yes, photos are commonly included with obituaries, especially when published online or in print newspapers. A recent picture or one from the person’s younger years can provide a visual reminder of the loved one.

How soon after death should an obituary be published?

Obituaries are usually published within a few days after death. This timing allows friends and the broader community to be informed about the passing and any upcoming services. However, the exact timing can vary based on publication deadlines and family preferences.

Where are obituaries published?

Obituaries are traditionally published in local newspapers, but with the rise of the internet, many are now posted online through various platforms like legacy websites, social media, and funeral home webpages. In addition, some people also choose to submit obituaries to professional journals or association newsletters.

Is it compulsory to publish an obituary?

No, it is not legally required to publish an obituary. However, it is a widely practiced cultural norm to announce a death and provide information about funeral arrangements.

What tone should an obituary have?

The tone of an obituary should be respectful and honor the life of the deceased. While it can recount achievements and provide a biographical account, it can also reflect the personality of the deceased with a tone that ranges from solemn to celebratory.

Can an obituary be written before someone dies?

Yes, in some cases, individuals opt to write their own obituaries in advance to ensure that their life is captured as they wish. Some people find comfort in having control over this final aspect of their personal history.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

Publication costs for obituaries vary widely, depending on the length of the obituary and the medium in which it is being published. Newspapers often charge by line or word, while online postings may have a flat fee or even be free.

Are there any common guidelines for writing an obituary?

While there's no single set of rules, common guidelines include being factual and honest, keeping the tone respectful, ensuring all information about service times and locations is accurate, and providing a succinct account of the person’s life and the family they leave behind.

How do you announce funeral or memorial service details in an obituary?

Clearly state the time, date, and location of any service arrangements including visitations, funerals, burials, and memorial services. If there are private services, you may simply mention that services will be held privately.

Should an obituary include causes of death?

Whether to include the cause of death is a personal decision. It is not required and should be considered based on the family's comfort level with sharing such details publicly.

Can friends submit obituaries on behalf of the family?

Yes, friends can submit obituaries, but they should always have the family’s consent and cooperation to ensure that all information is accurate and approved by the family.

What if there are errors in an obituary?

If errors are found in an obituary after publication, most newspapers and websites will allow for corrections to be made. It’s best to contact the publication as soon as possible to rectify any inaccuracies.

How can you personalize an obituary?

An obituary can be personalized with anecdotes, quotes, or specific accomplishments that highlight the unique aspects of the deceased's life. Including hobbies, passions, or charity work can also reflect the personality of the individual.

Is there support available for writing an obituary?

Many funeral homes offer obituary writing services, and there are also professional writers who specialize in crafting heartfelt and personalized obituaries. Online resources and templates can also guide family members or friends who decide to write an obituary themselves.

Can an obituary be rejected by a newspaper?

While rare, an obituary submission may be rejected if it does not meet the publication's standards or guidelines. This could include cases of inappropriate content or lack of verifiable information. Always read the publication's submission guidelines carefully.
