Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a notice of a person’s death, usually published in newspapers or online platforms. It serves as a way to inform the community and acquaintances of the deceased's passing, and it traditionally includes a brief biography, details about the funeral or memorial services, and information about surviving family members.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries are important because they help to acknowledge the loss, celebrate the life lived, and inform the community of the departure. They also provide a record for future generations to trace genealogy and family history.

Who is responsible for writing an obituary?

Usually, a close family member or the executor of the deceased’s estate takes responsibility for writing the obituary. However, some people choose to write their own obituaries before they pass, and in other cases, funeral directors or professional writers may be enlisted to write the notice.

What should be included in an obituary?

An obituary typically includes the full name of the deceased, dates of birth and death, a short biography, details of the funeral or memorial services, and a list of surviving family members. It may also include significant life achievements, affiliations, and a mention of any causes for charitable donations in lieu of flowers.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary greatly depending on the preferences of the family, the life complexity of the deceased, and the space available or cost if published in a traditional newspaper. Online obituaries may allow for more extensive information due to less restrictive space limitations.

Is it necessary to publish an obituary in a newspaper?

It is not legally necessary to publish an obituary in a newspaper, but it is a common tradition. Many families choose to also or instead post obituaries online, either on dedicated memorial websites or social media platforms, to reach a broader audience.

How much does it typically cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, length of the obituary, and whether or not a photograph is included. Traditional newspaper obituaries can range from a modest fee to several hundred dollars, while many online memorials may be free or have lower costs.

Are there different types of obituaries?

Yes, there are generally two types of obituaries: a standard obituary, which follows a traditional format, and a death notice which is usually shorter, stating only basic details of the death and service information without a biography or personal details.

Can I add a photo to an obituary?

Yes, you can add a photo to an obituary. A photograph can make the obituary more personal and recognizable to readers. However, some publications may charge an additional fee to include a photo.

How are obituaries verified?

Newspapers and other publication services usually require verification of death before they will publish an obituary. This is typically done by providing a death certificate or through confirmation by a funeral home or crematory.

What if an error is found in the obituary after publication?

If an error is discovered in an obituary after publication, you can contact the publication to run a correction. It’s important to do this promptly to prevent the spread of inaccurate information.

Should an obituary mention the cause of death?

Mentioning the cause of death in an obituary is a personal choice, and there is no requirement to include it. Some families prefer to keep this information private, while others may include it, especially if the deceased was a public figure or if the family wishes to raise awareness about a certain health condition or issue.

Is there a difference between an obituary and a eulogy?

Yes, there is a difference. An obituary is a written announcement of someone's death, including brief biographical information and service details. A eulogy is a speech given during the funeral or memorial service that pays tribute to and celebrates the life of the deceased.

Can you include personal messages in an obituary?

While obituaries tend to follow a standard format, personal messages such as a final farewell or a special thank-you can be included. This can add a touch of personal sentiment to the notice, making it more meaningful for family and friends.

How to decide what achievements to include in the obituary?

When deciding which achievements to include in the obituary, consider highlighting the most significant milestones that marked the deceased’s life or those achievements that they were most proud of. This can include professional accomplishments, community service, or personal hobbies and passions.

What guidelines should you follow when writing an obituary?

When writing an obituary, you should aim to be respectful, truthful, and concise. Provide clear and accurate information about service details and surviving family members and remember to proofread for errors before submission. It's also advisable to keep the tone appropriate for the context in which it will be read.

What is the importance of the surviving family list in an obituary?

The surviving family list in an obituary serves to acknowledge the relatives who are closely affected by the loss. It honors the family's connection to the deceased and provides a point of contact for friends and the wider community who may wish to offer their condolences.

While obituaries are not legal documents, they may sometimes be used as proof for various services that require verification of death, such as closing accounts or claiming benefits. However, a death certificate is typically the official document used for legal purposes.

How soon after death should an obituary be published?

An obituary is generally published within a few days to a week after death, as it often includes information about forthcoming funeral arrangements. Timeliness is also important to ensure that the community and distant friends and relatives are informed in time to pay their respects.

What privacy considerations should be taken into account when publishing an obituary?

When writing and publishing an obituary, consider the privacy of the deceased and the family. Avoid including overly personal details or information that could lead to identity theft. It is important to balance the public's need to know with the family's need for privacy.

Is it possible to publish an obituary for someone who didn't want one?

Yes, it is possible to publish an obituary even if the deceased did not want one. However, respecting the wishes of the deceased is important, and the family should carefully consider these wishes before proceeding with publication.
