Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice of a person's death, commonly published in a newspaper or online. It serves as a public announcement and often includes a brief biography of the deceased, surviving family members, funeral or memorial service information, and any special messages or instructions from the family.

What is the main purpose of an obituary?

The main purpose of an obituary is to inform the community of an individual's passing and to celebrate the life they lived. It also serves to provide pertinent information about any upcoming services and to invite those who knew the person to partake in the commemoration of their life.

How long after a death is an obituary usually published?

An obituary is typically published within a few days after a person has passed away. This allows time for the family to make arrangements and to gather the necessary information for the obituary.

Who is responsible for writing an obituary?

While funeral homes often offer the service of writing an obituary, it can be written by a family member or freind of the deceased. The responsibility usually lies with the closest surviving relative or the executor of the deceased's estate.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, you can write your own obituary. Some prefer to do this as a way to ensure their life story is told in the way they want it to be remembered. It's also a kindness to your loved ones to relieve them of the task during a time of grief.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

An obituary generally includes the full name of the deceased, their age, place of residence, date of birth, date of death, names of surviving relatives, details about their education and employment, notable achievements, information about the funeral or memorial service, and often a sentiment or reflection on their life.

Is it necessary to include a cause of death?

It is not necessary to include the cause of death in an obituary if the family prefers to keep that private. The decision is a personal one and should be respected by anyone assisting in the obituary's creation.

What makes a good obituary?

A good obituary effectively summarizes a person's life, captures the essence of their personality, and conveys the impact they had on others. It should be factual, but also personal and heartfelt, providing a narrative that honors the deceased while informing the reader.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

To submit an obituary to a newspaper, you should first check their submission guidelines, often found on their website. You may need to fill out a form and provide a copy of the obituary text, along with any desired photographs. There may be a fee based on the length and the inclusion of images.

Are there alternatives to newspaper obituaries?

Yes, alternatives include online memorial sites, social media platforms, community bulletin boards, church newsletters, and more. Online platforms often have the added benefit of reaching a wider audience and allowing for easy sharing among friends and family.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

An obituary is typically a more detailed account of a person's life, providing insight into their personality, values, and the relationships they had. A death notice is a more straightforward, formal announcement of a person's passing, which may only include essential details about the person, their death, and funeral or memorial service information.

Can I include a photograph with an obituary?

Yes, many newspapers and online services allow the inclusion of a photograph with the obituary. There may be an additional cost for this in newspapers, and the publication will often have specific guidelines for the photo's format and quality.

Is there a standard length for obituaries?

There is no standard length for obituaries as it varies greatly depending on the publication or platform and the life story of the deceased. Newspaper obituaries may be shorter due to space constraints and cost, while online obituaries can often be longer and more detailed.

What are some common phrases or words used in obituaries?

Phrases such as "passed away," "surrounded by loved ones," "went to be with his/her Lord," "after a long battle with," or "left us peacefully" are commonly used. Others might include "cherished," "beloved," "will be missed," and "never forgotten" among descriptions of the deceased.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary can vary widely depending on the newspaper or website, the geographical location, the length of the obituary, and whether a photo is included. Prices can range from free on some online platforms to several hundred dollars for a newspaper obituary.

Can anyone write and publish an obituary?

Yes, friends, family members, or associates can write and publish an obituary. However, it's essential to have the consent of the immediate family or the executor of the deceased's estate to ensure all information shared is approved by those closest to the deceased.

How can I personalize an obituary?

To personalize an obituary, consider including anecdotes, a favorite quotation or poem, a list of the deceased's hobbies or passions, individual achievements, and any lasting messages they may have shared. This helps to portray the unique life and essence of the person who has passed away.

Are obituaries verified for truthfulness?

Obituaries submitted to newspapers and reputable online sites usually undergo a verification process, where death is confirmed either through a funeral home, a family contact, or an official death certificate to prevent false or misleading information from being published.

Can you update an obituary after it has been published?

For print newspapers, once an obituary is published, it cannot be updated. However, on many online platforms, updating or editing an obituary may be possible. It's important to check with the specific publication or website about their policies on updates or revisions.

What if a deceased person has no surviving family members?

Even if a person has no surviving family members, an obituary can still be published. It may be written by friends, caregivers, or associates who were close to the deceased. If no one is available to write the obituary, a funeral home may provide a basic death notice.

Is an obituary legally required?

No, an obituary is not a legal requirement; it is a customary way to announce a death and share information about the deceased's life and the arrangements that have been made. It is entirely up to the family or representatives of the deceased to decide if an obituary should be published.
