Brian Timothy Brackney - November 05, 1956 - March 20, 2023

Departed: 03/20/2023 (Pacheco)
Obituary Preview: Brian Timothy Brackney, Nov. 5, 1956 – March 20, 2023
Brian Timothy Brackney, a longtime resident of the San Francisco Bay Area, died peacefully at his home in Antioch on Monday, March 20. Brian was diagnosed with advanced pancreatic cancer in January and spent the last two months of his life in hospice care. He was 66 years old.
Brian, who suffered from disorganized schizophrenia since early childhood, never held fulltime employment, yet managed to earn a college degree and lived a full and interesting life until the early weeks of this year. Born Nov. 5, 1956, in Whittier, Calif., Brian grew up in the city of his birth and graduated from Whittier High School in 1974. Despite his condition and a difficult childhood, he continued his education and earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from UC Santa Barbara in 1980.
In 1983 he found his way to the Bay Area -- a locale that had always held his fascination -- and spent the rest of his life here, primarily in San Francisco and Oakland before spending his final years in Antioch.
Before all that, Brian had gained an encyclopedic knowledge in his topics of interest. They included criminal and civil law, US and world history, US politics, world religions, classical music, opera and current events, among many others. The consummate bookworm, Brian spent endless hours in libraries over the course of his life, up till his final weeks. He surely read thousands of volumes, and was happy to share his knowledge with anyone who showed an interest.
Unfortunately, Brian’s gifts did not translate to paid employment, but with resourcefulness and determination, he always managed to stay housed and fed. He volunteered as an advocate for disability rights, even joining protests on their behalf at the state capitol. He also protested for peace and human rights. He never had a driver’s license, but loved to travel. He would ride the bus from California to the East Coast to pursue his many interests, and even found creative ways to travel abroad on a regular basis.
Brian was a member of the First Unitarian Church of Oakland for 40 years, and in 2009 he joined the Live Oak fellowship of Unitarians in Alameda as well. His memorial service will be at the Oakland church on Friday, March 31, at 2 p.m. The attendees will include Brian’s surviving siblings, Diana Brackney Pellegrin of Folsom, Calif., and David Brackney of Whittier, Calif. Another sibling, Robert Leroy Brackney III passed away in 2022.
