Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a notice of a person's death, typically published in a newspaper or online, which includes a brief biography of the deceased, information about the funeral or memorial services, and may also contain personal sentiments from the family. It serves both as a way to inform the community of the loss and to honor the life of the departed.

Why is it important to write an obituary?

An obituary is important because it formally acknowledges the passing of a person, provides a space for memorializing them, and notifies the community about the details of the services to be held. It also serves as a historical record for future generations.

Who typically writes an obituary?

An obituary is often written by a close family member, but can also be composed by a friend, a funeral director, or a professional writer hired by the family.

What information is traditionally included in an obituary?

Traditionally, an obituary includes the full name of the deceased, dates of birth and death, a brief account of their life, achievements, and personality, surviving family members, any funeral or memorial service details, and sometimes a request for charitable donations in lieu of flowers.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary greatly, but generally, it should be concise enough to convey key information while allowing for reflection on the person's life. Newspapers may have word limit restrictions, while online obituaries can be longer.

Are obituaries published before or after the funeral service?

Obituaries are typically published before the funeral service to inform people of the event so they may attend. The timing, however, can depend on different factors, such as publication deadlines and the family's wishes.

Is there a difference between an obituary and a death notice?

Yes, a death notice is a shorter, more factual statement of death, often limited to the name, age, and information about the funeral service. An obituary is more detailed and includes a biography and personal messages from the family.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?

To submit an obituary to a newspaper, you usually need to contact the newspaper's obituary department for guidelines and pricing. Online platforms often have submission forms and instructions directly on their websites.

Can I include a photo in an obituary?

Yes, many obituaries include a photo of the deceased. It can be a recent picture or an older one that reflects an important stage of their life. Be sure to check with the publication for any specific photo requirements.

Is it necessary to mention the cause of death?

Mentioning the cause of death is not necessary and is entirely up to the family's discretion. Some families choose to include this information for clarity or to bring awareness to a particular health issue or cause.

What should I do if I want to write a more personal and unique obituary?

To write a more personal obituary, focus on the qualities and stories that defined the individual. Share anecdotes, include quotes from the deceased or their loved ones, and mention significant contributions or distinctive traits to make it more heartfelt and unique.

How do I handle sensitive information when writing an obituary?

Always approach sensitive information with care and respect. If you're hesitant about including certain details, consult other family members and consider the wishes of the deceased when they were alive. Protect privacy by omitting overly personal data, unless it is crucial to the individual's life story.

Should I mention former spouses or estranged family members in an obituary?

The mention of former spouses or estranged family members depends on the family dynamics and the relationships involved. The priority should be to present the information with respect and sensitivity, and sometimes, it's best to discuss this with other family members before making a decision.

Can we write a humorous or unconventional obituary?

Yes, if it reflects the personality and wishes of the deceased, a humorous or unconventional obituary can be a fitting tribute. However, make sure it is appropriate and considerate of all who will read it, including those who may be grieving traditionally.

What are some common mistakes to avoid when writing an obituary?

Common mistakes include misspelling names, getting factual information wrong (such as dates or service times), being too verbose, or not including enough detail. It's also important to avoid including overly private or sensitive information without consent.

How soon after a death should an obituary be published?

An obituary should be published in a timely manner, generally within a few days of the death, to allow for the community to be informed and to plan for attendance at services. Yet, some families may choose to publish at a later date due to cultural practices or personal reasons.

Are obituaries free to publish, or is there a cost?

Many newspapers and online platforms charge a fee to publish an obituary, which can depend on the length of the text, inclusion of a photo, and any additional features. Some community publications or websites may offer free or discounted rates, so it's worth researching your options.

Can an obituary be edited or removed after publication?

If errors are found or circumstances change, most publications will allow edits to an obituary before a certain deadline or before it goes to print. Removal after publication can be more challenging, especially in printed formats, so it's crucial to review carefully before submission.

Typically, immediate family members have the authority to write and approve an obituary. In situations where there might be disputes or legal considerations, it may be advisable to consult with a legal professional or the deceased's estate executor.

What if family members disagree on the obituary content?

If disagreements arise, it's important to have open and empathetic discussions to reach a consensus that respects the deceased's memory and accommodates family wishes. Mediation from a neutral party, like a funeral director or family friend, may sometimes be helpful.

How can family and friends use an obituary to express condolences or share memories?

Family and friends can write condolence messages or share memories either by signing a guestbook if the obituary is posted online, leaving comments, or sending cards and letters to the family. Sharing personal stories and messages can be a significant part of the grieving and healing process.
