James Paradise, Jr. - September 23, 1930 - April 21, 2024

Departed: 04/21/2024 (Highland Falls)
Obituary Preview: James Paradise, Jr. September 23, 1930-April 21, 2024
James “Jim” Paradise, Jr. passed away peacefully surrounded by family on April 21st, 2024, at his home at Falcon’s Landing in Potomac Falls, Virginia. He was born in Nyack, NY, on September 23rd, 1930, to James and Katherine (Demartini) Paradise.
Jimmy, as he was known to his friends and classmates, graduated from Nyack High School in 1948. Following graduation, he worked at Lederle Labs, where he met and fell in love with “Billie” Gizzi of Haverstraw, NY. Not long after, Jim enlisted in the Army as the Korean War began. After basic training, he accepted the Army’s offer to attend the Military Academy at West Point. Following a courtship that lasted throughout his years at West Point, and his graduation, and commissioning as a second lieutenant in the Corps of Engineers, Billie and Jimmy were married on June 9th, 1956, at Most Holy Trinity Chapel at West Point.
Their first assignment was Hawaii, where their daughters, Donna, and Carleen, were born in 1957 and 1959, respectively. His career included two tours in Vietnam, an attaché assignment to Madrid, Spain, duty at the Air Force Academy, where he was part of the team that built the now famous chapel, and educational assignments to the Defense Language Institute, the University of Illinois, where he earned a master’s degree in civil engineering, and the Command and General Staff College at Ft. Leavenworth, KS.
Later in his career, Jim was assigned to Washington, DC, where he served with the directorate of Postal Construction in the office of the Army Chief of Engineers. While assigned to the Military District of Washington, Lieutenant Colonel Paradise retired from the Army but continued his work as a civil engineer at Bechtel, where he remained a principal engineer on the Metro system that he very proudly saw enter service in 1976.
In 1979, Jimmy and Billie welcomed Second Lieutenant George Patten into the family as he and their daughter, Donna, were married at Most Holy Trinity Chapel at West Point. They then welcomed Peter Warren into the family in 1982 as he and Carleen were married at historic St. Mary’s church in Fairfax Station, VA.
In 1981, the first of Jimmy and Billie’s seven grandchildren was born at Ft. Knox, KY and they became Poppy and Mimsy, endearing names that would define them ever after as their “family first” focus grew with the birth of each grandchild. In all, Larissa (Patten) Paradise Thompson, James Benjamin Patten, Peter James Warren, Jonathan Carl Patten, Cara Marie Warren, Joshua Michael Patten, and Johanna “Josie” Teresa Warren would meet and marry their spouses and bless Mimsy and Poppy with 14 and counting great-grandchildren.
Jim, ever the engineer, helped design a beautiful custom home in Lake of the Woods in central Virginia into which he and Billie would move in 1995 upon his retirement. Sadly, Billie passed away in 1998 after which he moved to Heritage Hunt in Gainesville, VA. In 2007 he found the perfect home for him at Falcon’s Landing in Reston, VA, where he entertained his growing family and became an active and loved member of the military retirement community for 17 years.
Jim is pre-deceased by his beloved wife, Wilhelmina “Billie” Gizzi Paradise, his parents, and both siblings, Joan and George Paradise of New City, NY. He leaves behind his daughters, Donna Paradise Patten and Carleen Paradise Warren, their husbands, George Patten and Peter Warren, seven grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.

Andrew "Andy" Chronopoulos - March 15, 1933 - February 19, 2024

Departed: 02/19/2024 (Highland Falls)
Obituary Preview: Andrew “Andy” Chronopoulos March 15, 1933 – February 19, 2024 Highland Falls, New York In Loving Memory of Andrew "Andy" Chronopoulos
With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Andy Chronopoulos, a cherished husband, dedicated father, and loving grandfather. Tragically, Andy succumbed to Broken Heart Syndrome (Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy) only a few short weeks after his beloved wife and life partner of 66 years, Popi Chronopoulos, passed away. Their bond was inseparable in life and, fittingly, they departed this world together.
Born in 1933, Andy grew up surrounded by the beauty of his family village of Kalavrita in the Achaea region of Greece. Andy first came to the United States when he was only 17 years old. He arrived in Hartford, Connecticut, and worked full-time in a restaurant until 1958, when he returned to Greece for a vacation. There, at his sister's wedding, Andy's life would be intertwined with love and commitment when he met the woman who would become his beloved wife, Kalliopi "Popi". Together, they embarked on an adventure, leaving their homeland for America, eventually settling in Poughkeepsie, NY, and later establishing roots in the welcoming Village of Highland Falls.
In 1964, Andy and Popi took ownership of the Highland Falls Restaurant, which became affectionately known as "Andy's." For seven days a week, spanning four decades, the devoted couple cooked, served and entertained, often with help from their sons. They poured their hearts and souls into the establishment, transforming it into a beacon of warmth and hospitality for Highland Falls and the surrounding communities. Andy's devotion to embracing, nurturing, and comforting his patrons with homemade meals, a unique sense of humor, and a kind smile created lasting memories for countless individuals who walked through the doors of Andy's Restaurant.
After Andy and Popi sold the restaurant in 2000, they spent much of their time volunteering and remaining active in their Highland Falls community. Andy was a fixture in the community, known for his giving and kindness. Alongside Popi, he generously volunteered his time and resources to various organizations and events, including hosting the annual community Christmas dinner for over 40 years. In a 1977 interview, Andy said, "I come from a small town in Greece. We had a large very close family. That's when I learned to have fun with people. The best part of my job is laughing and joking around with the customers. Highland Falls reminds me of my hometown in Greece in many ways. It's small, and the people all know and look out for each other." When asked if he had any plans for the future, Andy said, "I want to stay home and take it easy, and then travel and have a good time. Everybody has those dreams, don't they?"
Andy is survived by sons, Billy and Dean, and his grandchildren, Andrew and Kalliopi "Kalie", named after their grandparents.
Visitation honoring the vibrant life of Andy Chronopoulos will be held on Sunday, February 25, 2024, from 2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. at William F. Hogan Funeral Home, 135 Main Street, Highland Falls, NY, with a Trisagion Service beginning at 4:00 p.m. A Funeral Service will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 26, 2024, at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 19 Fullerton Ave., Newburgh, NY. Kalliopi "Popi" Chronopoulos - August 01, 1936 - January 30, 2024

Departed: 01/30/2024 (Highland Falls)
Obituary Preview: **In Loving Memory of Kalliopi "Popi" Chronopoulos**
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our Beloved, Popi Chronopoulos. Popi, born in 1936 and raised in Lykouria, in the Achaea region of Greece, embarked on a remarkable life journey that touched the hearts of many.
Popi is survived by her devoted husband, Andy, her sons, Billy and Dean, and her grandchildren, Andrew and Kalliopi.
At the age of 22, Popi met the love of her life, Andy, at his sister’s wedding. Following the Greek tradition of their time, they married in 1958 and set out for America, eventually settling in Poughkeepsie, NY. Shortly after, they made their home in the warm village of Highland Falls, NY, where they crafted a beautiful life story while raising their two sons, Basili ("Billy") and Constantine ("Dean").
In 1964, the couple took ownership of the Highland Falls Restaurant, which soon became known as "Andy's," a true family business where the entire family worked tirelessly seven days a week, sharing their passion for food and hospitality. Over 37 years, “Andy's Restaurant” became a cherished gathering place for the communities of Highland Falls, Fort Montgomery, West Point, and travelers passing through. Popi and Andy's love for people reflected in the way they treated everyone like family and by nurturing a sense of welcome and comfort for each person coming through the door, as though they were coming home.
In 2000, after selling their beloved restaurant, Popi still had a deep longing to be of service, especially to children. Consequently, she was invited to work with the Highland Falls-Fort Montgomery School District and assumed the role of the Lunch Hostess at the middle school. For over two decades, she served in this capacity, caring for thousands of young children over her twenty-year tenure until her retirement in 2021.
Popi had a deep commitment to the community, earning various accolades from the New York State Assembly, Senator Skoufis, the U.S. Military Academy, the Highland Falls-Fort Montgomery School District, and the Constitution Island Association, just to name a few. In addition to volunteering with organizations such as Meals on Wheels, the Garden Club, various blood drives, community events & dinners, Popi and Andy hosted the village's annual community Christmas dinner, which over the past 40 years has served thousands of community members. She has been recognized as Greek Person of the Year by the Village of Highland Falls and also by Orange County just last year. Popi's dedication to community service earned her gratitude and admiration, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew her.
Popi's passions extended beyond her career, community, and family; she held a deep love for her religion. A dedicated member of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Newburgh, NY, Popi actively participated in the Ladies’ Society, contributing to the church's charitable initiatives. Whether baking pastries, preparing Greek dishes, or offering a warm smile and a joke, Popi's love and joy touched everyone she encountered. Popi's legacy is deeply rooted in her family's spiritual heritage. Born to a father who was a priest, she carried on the traditions of faith, compassion, and community service. Her upbringing and strong faith in God were evident in every aspect of her life.
In her spare time, Popi enjoyed gardening, cultivating a vibrant array of flowers and vegetables solely with the intention of giving it all away. Her green thumb was evident in the beauty surrounding her home, creating a colorful and fruitful haven that mirrored the warmth and love she generously shared with her family and friends.

Departed: 12/25/2023 (Highland Falls)
Obituary Preview: Barbara J. Woodard July 5, 1935 – December 25, 2023 Highland Falls, NY
Barbara J. Woodard (Lewis), age 88, affectionately known as “Nan” to many, passed away at Yorktown Assisted Living Residence, Cortlandt, NY on December 25, 2023. She was a resident of Highland Falls, NY, all of her life.
Barbara was the daughter of the late Edmund and Anne Lewis of Highland Falls, NY. She was married to the late Robert C. Woodard, Sr. Barbara worked at the Thayer Hotel as a maid for 15 years and then at the Dept. of Engineering and Housing, West Point, NY, as a custodial worker, where she retired in 1993. Barbara was a big Army football fan and enjoyed watching the games on TV and hearing the cannons go off when they scored! “Nan adjusted well to life at her daughter Kathy’s house in Ft. Montgomery, after moving all the way from Highland Falls in 2015. You could find her walking around the neighborhood, waving and stopping to chat a bit with the neighbors. She settled in nicely as the new Chief, neighborhood watch of Bridge Terrace! She was a lover of diet pepsi, party mix chips, double stuffed oreos, all things candy, scratch offs, Little Richie’s wings, and King Buffet! In the summer, even at 85 years young, you could find her on the deck laying in the sun getting that ‘perfect tan’. She enjoyed our yearly “drop off in Virginia” where we would meet Linda and Mike so she could stay with them in Florida during the winter months. Nan loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren dearly.”
In July 2021 Mom moved into Yorktown Assisted Living Residence in Cortlandt, NY. There she met the most wonderful staff and residents who helped her adjust to her new digs. She loved the daily activities there, especially bingo and pokeno. “Barbara was the loudest resident to call Bingo!” She will forever be at their bingo and pokeno tables in spirit! The family would like to thank all the staff and residents of Yorktown Assisted Living for the loving care and fun times given Mom before her passing. Thank you for tying her shoes, putting her earrings in, getting her sweet treats whenever she wanted them, and for being her ‘family’ when we weren’t there.
She is survived by her children Linda (Mike) Christoff, Crestview, Florida; Kathy (Jim) Ripa, Ft. Montgomery; and Barbara Sullivan, Highland Falls; her grandchildren Michael (Jodie), Dustin Christoff (fiancée Kelley), Ashley O’Dell (Andrew); Brandi & Jimmy Ripa, and Brian Sullivan; 2 great grandchildren Dana & Brooke O’Dell; her loving sister Berenece Kelly, as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, and her son, Robert C. Woodard, Jr, as well as her siblings Shirley Dean, Rowie Pond, Patsy Pastin, Edna Eynon and Ed Lewis.

Earl Duston Saunders - April 01, 1950 - October 26, 2023

Departed: 10/26/2023 (Highland Falls)
Obituary Preview: Earl Duston Saunders, a resident of Highland Mills for over 40 years, passed away peacefully at the age of 73 on October 26, 2023. Duston was the loving husband, warrior, and champion of Joanne (Hines) Saunders, to whom he had been married for 50 years. A thoroughly humble and devout servant who shunned any form of personal recognition, his life was a model for all who knew him.
The son of the late James Walter Saunders and Louise LuEllen Saunders, Duston was born on April 1, 1950, in San Antonio, Texas. Over the years his family relocated to Ohio and Duston entered the U.S. Military Academy on July 1, 1968. During his time as a Cadet at West Point, he met Joanne, the love of his life, at a school dance (hop). Following his graduation in June 1972, he and Joanne married at West Point in June 1973. His decades of service to the Nation, the Army, the Military Academy, and the Corps of Cadets, with Joanne always at his side, began at that dance.
Duston’s Army career as an infantryman included service with the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky; the 1st Battalion 509th Infantry (Airborne) in Vicenza, Italy; and with the 42nd Infantry Division, New York National Guard. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in July 2000 having completed Airborne, Ranger, Pathfinder, and Jumpmaster courses, and multiple company command tours.
After leaving active duty Duston joined Arbitration Forums, a national corporation that provides arbitration and mediation programs for insurance related disputes. Initially serving as the Comptroller, Duston was quickly promoted to Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer.
Duston joined the West Point Association of Graduates in 1992 and served 18 years in positions of increasing responsibility, where he increased annual giving eight-fold, and led major initiatives that transformed the organization into a modern, nationally recognized collegiate fund-raising organization.
Duston is best known for his extraordinary accomplishments as the Coach of the West Point Pistol Team for 31 years. The Team won 211 victories to 54 losses over 30 seasons, including 9 overall National Intercollegiate Pistol Championships and 20 national event championships. His teams finished first, second or third 26 times in 29 National Championships. 75 Cadets have earned 247 All-America honors. To better prepare team members for combat after graduation, Duston secured additional resources to allow training at an internationally recognized training school with intensive tactical live-fire training. In addition to his coaching duties, Duston was heavily involved in the design and project management that rebuilt and restored West Point’s Marksmanship Center.
Duston innately knew how to teach, train, motivate and lead the young men and women in the Corps of Cadets to achieve their potential. He was revered by his team members because of his true care of them. He was not only a pistol coach but a life coach. He wanted nothing more than to make everyone better and served as a mentor to team members at West Point as well as after their graduation. His cadets considered the team to be their family, a key part of which was the foundation of respect, unquestioning support, and encouragement from “Mrs. Coach.” His leadership was recognized across the national collegiate pistol community. Honored three times as the Distinguished College Coach, he also earned a lifetime award for “Outstanding Service to Collegiate Shooting Sports.” He received the Mike Krzyzewski Award for Excellence in Teaching Character Through Sport in 2011. He was also selected four times to coach Team USA Pistol Team at the World University Games in China, Russia, South Korea, and Italy. He was an extraordinary supporter of the Class of 1972, volunteering to chair highly successful and professionally executed class reunions at West Point; providing awards to graduating sons and daughters of the class; representing the Class at many events with the affiliation class of 2022; and securing custom-engraved pistols for hundreds of graduates and USMA faculty. His Company B-1 classmates considered him the best of them all and they recently nominated him for the U.S. Military Academy Distinguished Graduate Award, presented to graduates whose character, distinguished service and stature reflect the Academy’s motto of “Duty, Honor, Country.”
He is survived by his wife, Joanne (Hines) Saunders, brothers, James Saunders (Lynn), Colin Saunders (Tracy) and sisters Penny Burleson (Bill), Deborah Simmons (Mike), and LuEllen Scouten.
Services will be held on April 1, 2024, at 1:30 p.m. at the Holy Trinity Chapel at the United States Military Academy in West Point, NY. Interment will follow at West Point Cemetery.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who want to pay their respects. They can also help families process their grief and come to terms with their loss.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the obituary is written by a family member, close friend, or funeral home staff member. In some cases, the deceased may have written their own obituary in advance.

What information should be included in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and help readers remember the person.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?
