Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

It is usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and remember the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They allow friends and family to pay their respects, share condolences, and celebrate the life of the person who has passed.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The responsibility of writing an obituary often falls on the family members or close friends of the deceased. Funeral homes or obituary writers may also assist in crafting the obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the deceased's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include details about the funeral service, memorial donations, or other relevant information.

How long does it take to write an obituary?

The time it takes to write an obituary can vary depending on the complexity and length of the notice. On average, it can take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours to craft a well-written and comprehensive obituary.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and newspapers allow you to include one or more photos of the deceased in the obituary. This can help personalize the notice and provide a visual tribute to the person who has passed.

Are there any specific guidelines for writing an obituary?

While there are no strict rules, it's essential to be respectful, accurate, and concise when writing an obituary. Avoid using overly emotional language or sensitive information that may be uncomfortable for some readers.

Can I include humor or anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! Including humorous stories or anecdotes can help capture the personality and spirit of the deceased, making the obituary more engaging and memorable.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?

If you're receiving condolences from strangers online, consider creating a private message system or email address specifically for these interactions. This can help you manage responses while maintaining privacy.

Can I use technology like QR codes or augmented reality in an obituary?

Are there any benefits to publishing an obituary in multiple places?

Publishing an obituary in multiple places – such as both online and in print – can increase visibility and reach a wider audience. This can be especially helpful for those with distant friends and family members who may not have access to local publications.
