John William Rouse - December 26, 1933 - May 10, 2024

Departed: 05/10/2024 (San Benito)
Obituary Preview: John William Rouse, a former FBI agent, lifelong Writer and a man of complexities, passed away at the age of 90 on Friday, May 10, 2024 at his residence in Harlingen, Texas. His life was marked by intense passions, a relentless pursuit of the truth, and a profound impact on those who knew him.
Born on December 26, 1933, John was a man ahead of his time, grappling with what we now recognize as bipolar disorder. His explosive temperament and obsessive nature were both his greatest strengths and his most challenging burdens. A dedicated FBI agent, John's career was most notably defined by his involvement in the investigation of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. He was assigned to follow a potential Cuban suspect, a mission that took a dramatic turn on a blustery day in Tampa.
In a twist of fate, John placed a crucial file of documents on the roof of his car and, in his haste, drove off, scattering the evidence to the wind. This incident, a defining moment in his career, led to his transfer to El Paso, Texas. Disillusioned and broken by the experience, John soon left the FBI and transitioned to a career in life insurance sales. Despite his professional shift, he never let go of his obsession with the Kennedy assassination, a topic that haunted him for the rest of his life.
John's personal life was turbulent. He often expressed regret for not having enough time to write, and this frustration manifested in verbal and physical abuse towards his family. His children endured his threats and volatile behavior, ultimately leading to a complete estrangement that lasted for the last 30 years of his life.
Sixteen years ago, John relocated to Harlingen, Texas, where he found solitude and finally indulged in his passion for writing. His neighbors remember him as a kind and gentle soul, a stark contrast to the man his family knew. This bittersweet revelation provides some solace to his surviving children, who are left to reconcile the two sides of their father.
John William Rouse leaves behind a legacy of a man tormented by his past but who found peace in his later years. His story is a poignant reminder of the complexities of mental health and the enduring impact of one's life choices.
May he rest in peace.
John is survived by two of his four children, who, despite the distance and pain of the past, carry forward his story with a hope for understanding and reconciliation.

Jerrett Manning Ray, Jr. - August 13, 1952 - May 02, 2024

Departed: 05/02/2024 (San Benito)
Obituary Preview: Jerrett M. (Skipper) Ray passed away Thursday, May 2, 2024, at the age of 71. Skipper was born August 13, 1952, in Miami, Florida to Joy and Jerry Ray.
The oldest of five children, Skipper spent his childhood in Port Isabel, Texas, where he discovered his passion for fishing. His family moved to Georgia when Skipper was 13, and he graduated from high school in Jesup, Georgia. Skipper married his high school sweetheart, Diane, and to this marriage two sons were born, Keith and Bryan. In Georgia, he spent seven years as a locomotive engineer. Then... Excerpt from Captain Skipper Chronicles:
“The year was 1978. I came back for a visit to where I had grown up, to South Padre, Port Isabel where my grandfather, uncle, cousin, and my brother Bryan were all guiding on the Laguna Madre. My brother said “Why don’t you get your Captain’s license and start guiding for me. I’ll let you run one of my bay boats and you can make some money for both of us!” Sounded good to me, because I loved fishing, and I loved people. With my Captain’s license in hand, I started guiding. I was off and running, of course after a few lessons from my family about where to go and not go. So, I’d follow Capt. Vere Wells around, as well as Ed Keller, and my grandpa – Capt. Wiley Mahurin. Did this till I found my own way around the bay. I got stuck a few times, but learned where I could and couldn’t go. I learned to read the water.”
Skipper went on to become an accomplished bay and offshore Captain. An angler since childhood, Skipper won numerous fishing awards. The award he was most proud of winning was the 1996 Texas International Fishing Tournament (TIFT) Bay Grand Champion, winning with a flyrod, and with his nephew Capt. Jeff Hartung as his poling man.
In 2015, his fishing prowess and charming disposition landed him the very best prize of his fishing career! While fishing in the Walk for Women tournament with his sister Joy and her friend India Bowles, Skipper captured India’s heart. They fell in love and have been inseparable ever since.
In addition to fishing, Skipper was a passionate 8 ball and 9 ball pool tournament player and enjoyed weekly tournaments with his friends. Skipper was also a talented guitar player and loved playing and singing at gatherings of his friends and family. Many people don’t know that Skipper grew up around airplanes and soloed for the first time at 16 years old and over the course of the next three years flew many planes from his father’s FBO airfield. Along with his brothers and father, Skipper also built and flew radio-controlled airplanes.
Friends and family are blessed to have shared in Skipper’s life and adventures. Skipper was loved by all who knew him. Thank you for the memories.
Skipper is preceded in death by his parents, Jarrett Manning Ray and Joy Patricia Mahurin; grandparents, Captain Wiley Mahurin, Selma Long Mahurin, Joseph C. Ray, and Daisy Ray.
Left to cherish his memories are his wife, India Bowles; children, Jerrett Keith Ray, Bryan Thomas Ray, Gus McGarraugh, and Kate McFarland; siblings, Bryan D. Ray, Wiley J. Seaton, Jason P. Ray, and Joy Ray Gimble; grandchildren, Joie Ray, Lindsey Ray, Rebekah Ray, Sarah Ann Ray, and great-aunt, Barbara (Bobby) Wells, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews. John Michael Searle - April 27, 1937 - April 27, 2024

Departed: 04/27/2024 (San Benito)
Obituary Preview: John “Johnny” Michael Searle, 86, of Belize, passed away on Wednesday, April 24, 2024, at his second home in Rancho Viejo, surrounded by his loving family.
Johnny was born in Hawarden, North Wales on the 27th of April 1937. In 1951, a holiday in British Honduras (Belize) to visit his father became permanent when he fell in love with the country, culture, and people. After graduating from The Belize Technical High School in 1955, he began to work at the Barclays Bank. Not long after, he was recruited by British Honduras Airways, agent of BWIA (British West Indies Airways) where he developed a passion for aviation. This enthusiasm led to the formation of his first company, Belize Global Travel Services in 1961. A second company was formed, Aero Dispatch Services, in 1963. These organizations transformed civil aviation within the country of Belize and to this day continue to service the country’s flourishing tourism market. Throughout his life, his entrepreneurial spirit saw him involved and invested in the insurance, media, real estate, hospitality, agricultural, and banking industries, to name a few.
Even though he was a businessman, he was first and foremost, a Belizean patriot. He consistently kept Belize and her people a top priority. He always said that he was born in Wales but forged in Belize. He gave the country and her people 100% credit for his successes.
His sense of humor, quick wit, and ability to tell jokes were a few of his strongest characteristics. He was always the life of the party. He was a lifelong Rotarian. Sheri Ann Hutchison - July 18, 1959 - April 24, 2024

Departed: 04/24/2024 (San Benito)
Obituary Preview: Sheri, 64, passed away peacefully on South Padre Island, TX on Wednesday, April 24, 2024 (Her parents' Anniversary, her Messner Grandparents’ Anniversary and Her Tanner Grandparents’ Anniversary.) Just after a full pink moon and an outstanding pink sun, sunrise. She was born in Pheonix, AZ. on July 18, 1959, to her parents: George K. Messner & Sylvia C. (Tanner) Messner.
Sheri wanted her family and friends to celebrate her life without a traditional funeral, celebration of life or memorial service. Let us grant her wish and remember her in our own special ways.
Out of 4 girls, she was the most rebellious, adventurous, outspoken, spontaneous, never on time and the only summer birthday.
Her and her sisters would hang sheets on the clotheslines and star in their own musicals with singing and dancing. As a kid, she was always super excited to get dressed up in equestrian clothes and ride on the 4th of July and Pioneer Days Parades. She turned her dream of working with animals into a hilarious reality, four times over! A petting zoo, wildlife sanctuary, vet clinic, and pet sitting gigs – she's done it all, ensuring furry friends have fun and get the care they need. Who let the dogs out? She did, even a baboon at the zoo!
She loved traveling, but flying and cruises were not her cup of tea. She lived a gypsy-like lifestyle, never staying in one place for too long, always eager for her next adventure, which she believed was just around the corner.
She was one with nature and could grow the most challenging of plants. She enjoyed everything that had to do with the outdoors, (Camping, Hiking, Lakes, Oceans, Beaches, Hunting for Rocks, Seashells and Crystals), Plants of all kinds (sneaking starts from the sides of the roads), she loved hummingbirds and butterflies, mushrooms and owls, wisteria, and wolves. We could go on, but her love is endless.
She had a great talent for painting nature scenes, in some unusual places (before it was cool) like old milk cans, leather, old saw blades, stones, feathers, planters, if it looked paintable, she could do it.
She had a huge heart and a love for animals (always said she liked them more than most people.) She provided so much inspiration and guidance to everyone who came into her life. She was a loving mother who raised 4+ wonderful children. Was always there for them, no matter what. She'd climb the tallest mountains, swim the deepest oceans, and would walk through fire barefoot for them. She was the light in total darkness & will always be a beacon of light & love in our hearts and souls. "She was always there to help the fallen get back on their feet (it didn’t matter how far they fell), she saved so many people and animals throughout her lifetime that when she made it to the Rainbow Bridge, she was greeted with more loved ones than attended Woodstock.
She was preceded in death by her Parents: George K. Messner & Sylvia C. Tanner.
Grandparents: George F. Messner & Margaret (Dimond) Messner, Irvin J. Tanner & Grace (Despain) Tanner; many Aunts, Uncles, Cousins & 1 Great Granddaughter. She is Survived by: Bonus Mom: Lynn Dyer
Sisters: Penny (Morton) White, Terri Messner-Norwood & Peggy Messner.
Special Companions: Pupkorn, Rocksee & Peanut Butter.
Children: William Z. Parker, JayLynn M. (Brandan) Bennett, Lori A. Hutchison & Justin R. Carson.
Bonus Daughters: Bridgett Beatty & Brittney Reed.
Grandchildren: Destiny M. Kerr, Logan O. Parker, Arieanna M. Brannan, David J. Kerr JR, Anthony J.A. Kerr & Travis A. Kerr.
Special Grand companions: Cocoa, Ricky-Bobby, Wilson Peanut Butter Cup-Pebbles.
Bonus Grandchildren: Tiffany (Jeremey) Pufahl, David (Katie) Cook, Crystal Cook, Gage Beatty & Zackary Brown.
Great Grandchildren: Landon M. Sorensen & Braelynn M. Sorensen.
Bonus Great Grandchildren: Anthony Pufahl, Annabella Pufahl, Nicholas Bushond, Sofia Cook, Jackson & Jasper Pufahl (Twins), Noah Beatty, David Cook, Sebastian Pufahl & Bentley Cook.
Additionally Survived by: Many Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, 5 Nieces, 3 Nephews, Many Many Friends, Bonus Families & Pet Clients (Bonus Pets). WE WILL ALL LOVE HER TO THE MOON & BACK!
Instead of sending floral tributes, please plant flowers or trees in her honor.

Ronald Kent Mathis - August 25, 1946 - April 19, 2024

Departed: 04/19/2024 (San Benito)
Obituary Preview: Ronald Kent Mathis, 77, of Rio Hondo, TX passed away Friday, April 19, 2024, at his residence with his loving wife by his side.
He is preceded in death by Lt. Colonel Bill and June Mathis; and wife, Cinda Mathis.
Left to cherish his memories are his wife, Gayle Mathis; daughters, De’Ann Dreyer (Jason), Terri Soll (Brent), Sherri Jones (Rickey), Danielle Michaels (Bobby); brother, Greg Mathis (Sherril); 8 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
Kent was a two-war Veteran serving in Vietnam and during Desert Storm stationed in Kuwait. Upon his return from the Middle East, Kent was assigned to the 35th Division Rear Operations Cell in Kansas City, Missouri. With the influence of some new "brothers," Kent became enthralled with canoeing on many Missouri Rivers and Streams. He loved the outdoors and spending time in peace and tranquility. Kent enjoyed annual events with his friends too. Super Bowl Weekend at the Lake, the spring trip to the winery and the annual float trip affectionately known as the DOFT (Dude Only Float Trip) over Columbus Day weekend.
Kent loved his brothers. Everywhere he went, he met a new "brother." From his tour in Nam to his final days in the Valley with his Combat Veterans Motorcycle Club, Kent was special to everyone with whom he came into contact, we are all Kent's brothers. There are Soldiers around the world who are better men and women thanks to Kent's friendship, leadership, and disposition. Kent had one hero in life. His Father, LTC(R) William (Bill) Mathis was everything to Kent. Bill was a three war Veteran (WWII, Korea, & Vietnam). Kent's love for God, Family and Country can all be attributed to "the Colonel" and his mother, "Mama Colonel."
As Kent now leaves this world, we find comfort in knowing he will be surrounded by his Hero, his mom, his brothers who have gone before him, and his wife Cinda. He will be sorely missed.
Born in Lebanon, MO and raised around the world as a well-dressed military brat. His mother was up to date with fashion and made sure the sons of an Army officer appeared as such. This does not mean he was well behaved. He was a boy and pulled foolish boyhood stunts.
Kent was drafted for Vietnam where he endured the hardships of war. Upon return to the states, he married and had two daughters (Sherri & De'Ann). Unfortunately, the marriage did not last but he later married Cinda Davis where he gained two more daughters (Terri & Danielle). Kent was full time in the MO National Guard where he retired in 1999 in Kansas City. Retirement provided years of travel for Kent & Cinda. They enjoyed their family and seeing our country until Cinda passed away in 2014.
Kent went on to marry Gayle Ayers in 2015. They enjoyed dancing and getting together with friends in the Rio Grande Valley (TX).
Ronald will be cremated in accordance with his wishes and escorted for inurnment to Fort Leonard Wood Veterans Cemetery, MO. by the Combat Veterans Motor Association at a later date.
You may sign the online guestbook, light a remembrance candle, or send words of comfort to the family of Ronald Kent Mathis at www.thomaegarza.com.
