Noah Carpenter - February 14, 2007 - February 16, 2024

Departed: 02/16/2024 (West End)
Obituary Preview: Noah passed away peacefully on Friday February 16th at home in his Momma’s arms. He came to us in November of 2011 via Shaggy Dog Rescue in Houston, TX. He had a horrible start in Houston and was saved from a high kill shelter by Kathy Wetmore, founder of Shaggy Dog Rescue. He was rejected by multiple families until he caught my eye as “Whitfield” on Petfinder. He reminded me of my first dog, Seabee, a Portuguese Water Dog who passed away in 2004. Kathy told me that he had separation anxiety and that he didn’t like to be locked inside. He was good with other dogs and loved to ride in the car. He looked perfect to me, so I submitted an application. After my involvement in rescue in recent years, I’m grateful that I didn’t know then, what I know now, or I would have never considered adopting a dog so far away that I had never met. Clearly it was meant to be - I was approved and Kathy flew him via Delta Airlines from Houston to Raleigh, and on November 21, 2011 he joined the Carpenters and their 4 other dogs. The other dogs were not thrilled with the new addition, but were civil and after a few weeks decided he was worthy of their approval. I named him “Noah” in honor of the greatest rescue of all time, and it suited him well. He had access to 8 acres via a doggy door to do as he pleased, plus plenty of dog brothers and sisters to keep him company through the years. He was in an understanding home at last. He was not without issues as there were many things that frightened him, like thunderstorms, flashing lights and loud noises. We had no idea that these were triggers for him until he bolted during a storm and ended up 26 miles away. Fortunately, collars with names, numbers and microchips do work and when he was safely returned, we added a GPS tracker to his collar. He adjusted in time to the scary things in life and knew Momma would always be the one that was there for him and keep him safe - forever and always. He came to us with a rabies tag dated 2005, so he was estimated to be 19 years old. He didn’t show his age until recently when his mobility began to decline significantly. We started Librela injections, but other health issues became too much to overcome and his quality of life started to suffer and sadly, it was time to say goodbye. Noah will always be one of my favorites. He was the sweetest, most gentle dog I’ve ever had with a soul that will live on forever. Destiny brought us together in 2011 and I am forever grateful that he allowed me to be “his person” for the rest of his life. Fly high, sweet Noah.

Luna Kappes-Brust - February 04, 2010 - September 19, 2023

Departed: 09/19/2023 (West End)
Obituary Preview: Luna Kappes-Brust 4 February 2010 - 19 September 2023
Luna was adopted on February 4, 2011 from Moore Humane by Kerry and John Kappes. Initially she was uncertain in her new home and it took some time to fully gain her trust. We never knew her circumstances prior to adoption. Once she settled in with us, she was a wonderful addition to our family. While we vacationed a few times far afield that precluded Luna from joining us, typically we sought out dog-friendly places. We had numerous adventures throughout the Carolinas, the Florida Keys, and Brosnan Forest, SC where John works.
She loved her fellow furry friends Chili and Ozzie, who stayed with us for sleepovers when their owners were away. Not one to chase or worry about squirrels, the crows were Luna’s main nemesis to keep at bay during her most active years in our fenced yard. She had a perfect spot on the side yard to watch the neighborhood and take naps in the sun.
We spoiled her just the right amount with chicken and bacon dog treats in her golden years. By late summer, it was difficult to manage her health issues and pain, so we knew it was the right time for euthanasia. Luna brought us so much joy simply being the calm and sweet dog that she embodied. We miss her dearly.

He was adored by his family, and all who had the pleasure of meeting him. Rhino’s favorite activities were sleeping, cuddling, and sitting like a king everywhere he went. He could be found lounging around the house and always in close proximity to his mom or dad. Rhino was a big mama’s boy and was not afraid to give dad the “stink eye” when he tried to interrupt his snuggles. Rhino will be deeply missed by all, but especially his family - Chris, Jessica, Ally, Blue, and Maddie. We ask that you give all your fur babies an extra hug and quality time in memory of Rhino today.

Spot Elchert - August 01, 2023 - August 18, 2023

Departed: 08/18/2023 (West End)
Obituary Preview: On Friday, August 18th, 2023, while surrounded by his family, our precious baby boy Spot crossed over the rainbow bridge. I would like to think that before Spot crossed over completely, he glanced back at me one last time saying, “goodbye for now”. After looking back at his mama, he ran as fast as his little legs would go straight into my Grandaddy’s arms for a joyous reunion that I could only imagine.
Spot was born in Frog Town (yes you read that right) before being brought home with my Grandaddy. For about 5yrs, Spot and Grandaddy were the best of friends. Spot was his “little buddy." Spot lived an adventurous life in Robbins. In the mornings my Grandaddy would let him out and he would run down the road to see his girlfriend and friends. They would play in open fields and wooded areas all day. In the afternoon, Grandaddy would drive down the road honking his horn. He would park at the end of the long driveway where Spot played and opened his door. Spot would come running up the driveway and immediately jump in his truck ready to go home for the evening. That was a daily routine for them. On April 19th, 2013, when my Grandaddy passed away, my husband and I took Spot home to live with us and our other 2 fur babies. Little did we know that Spot would become the piece of the puzzle we didn’t even know we were missing. He made our family complete. We became his parents, even though some would say he was my “Uncle Spot.” He loved to play outside and go on walks with his brothers Baxter and Maverick. I know Baxter and Maverick welcomed him with open paws alongside my Grandaddy. I’m sure Maverick made sure to hide any treats he had though before Spot arrived 🙂
Over the past decade, Spot became my companion and my best friend. He would follow me around everywhere I went. If I went upstairs, he wasn’t far behind. If I was using the bathroom you could count on him to push the door open. Spot was like my shadow. He was always there to greet me as soon as I opened the front door and would prance around in excitement. He loved his belly rubs too. He would even push your hand down with his paw to make sure you had the right spot. For being such a little boy, Spot sure had an appetite and could eat. Spot would eat his food then come to you and beg for yours. I couldn’t ever resist him though. That’s about the only time you would hear him bark, if he was begging for food. One of his favorites was his Haagen-Dazs dulce de leche ice cream. We enjoyed going on walks together…him of course getting pushed in the stroller and he loved to ride over to see my parents. He loved when daddy took him on walks around the farm. Every night before bed I would lay with him and give him his nightly cuddles and kisses. Spot meant everything to Andy and me, and his passing has left a big whole in our hearts.
Spot will be greatly missed by friends and family. He leaves behind his mama and daddy: Andy and Teah Elchert; human grandparents: Mitchell and Kathy Edmonds; aunt and uncle: John and Jill Durick; fur brothers in heaven: Baxter and Maverick and fur cousins in heaven: Diesel, Jasmine, Ecko, Lambeau, Prince and Harley Dog.
We would like to sincerely give thanks to Dr. Vamvakias, Dr. Davis and the staff at Vanguard Veterinary Hospital in West End along with Dr. Novak (Nephrology) and Dr. Reed (Internal Medicine) at NC State Veterinary Hospital for their outstanding and compassionate care. Spot had battled chronic kidney disease since 2019. Undoubtedly, we wouldn’t have had Spot in our lives this long without their expertise. Lastly, we would like to thank Good Shepherd, especially April for her professionalism and kindness during this difficult time. Good Shepherd makes this process easier when dealing with such grief.
It is going to be a difficult and heartbreaking road moving forward without our precious baby boy Spot. The adjustment of not having our fur babies with us has left a deep wound in our hearts. Knowing they are all together again has brought us peace. We were blessed with over ten wonderful years with Spot, but he has now returned home to my granddaddy’s side taking his final truck ride across the rainbow bridge. We love you and we’ll see you again Spot. Love, Mom and Dad. “How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.” - Winnie the Pooh

Buda Carpenter - April 01, 2012 - August 03, 2023

Departed: 08/03/2023 (West End)
Obituary Preview: Buda came into our lives on October 17th, 2012. He was living under a car on a vacant lot on Reservation Road. Bob was there to do some work for a family who would be moving there soon when he discovered the friendly little guy who had apparently been left behind by others. He appeared hungry, so Bob shared his sandwich with him, and they became fast friends. When Bob got in his truck to leave, the little dog sat at the edge of the road watching him get ready to drive away. Bob called and told me about him and asked what he should do...that was easy, bring him home! He was covered in grease, not neutered or microchipped and had been surviving on grubs, but that was all about to change. No owner came forward, so he joined Ozzy, Kida, Kai and Noah and became a Carpenter. He and Noah, who had been rescued from Houston the year before, became fast friends. When Noah left on a 26-mile adventure the following spring, Buda joined him, but quickly decided the road away from home was not for him, and fortunately, he was found in the neighborhood the next day - safe, but frightened. He would never take off again. Buda never met a stranger and loved everyone he met. He loved sitting on laps and giving kisses. He never met a biscuit he didn't love. He was always the smallest of his canine pack, but he had a mighty voice and was the proud leader of the "Howling Choir", who have sadly gone mute since his departure. We weren't ready for you to leave, sweet Budy Popper. We will miss you and love you...always and forever.

Jessie Kelly - July 04, 2023 - August 01, 2023

Departed: 08/01/2023 (West End)
Obituary Preview: Jessie came into our lives at 6 weeks old and loved and protected us for 12 years. She could always be seen walking her humans around downtown Southern Pines in the evenings. People would comment what a happy dog she was. She loved everyone but especially kids and she always wanted to stop and let them pet her. Even kids who were a little apprehensive felt comfortable with her as she wagged her tail with joy.
She is greatly missed by her humans and her adopted sister Indya. She was an only dog for 10years and when Indya joined our family, Jessie loved her and taught her everything she could about our pack.
Thank you so much Good Shepherd Crematory for your compassionate care after she ran across the Rainbow Bridge.

Ernie Armstrong - July 01, 2023 - July 30, 2023

Departed: 07/30/2023 (West End)
Obituary Preview: Ernie Armstrong, 28-year-old rescued Belgian Draft passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 30, 2023, at his farm with his family by his side assuring him that it was fine for him to move on to greener pastures. At 2:45 p.m., he crossed the Rainbow Bridge to meet his brother, Bert who preceded him in death in 2021.
Ernie spent most of his working life in Amish country pulling logs, plowing and doing the work of a draft horse. At the age of 22, he was dumped into a kill-pen in Madison, NC where his faithful family, Daniel, Kristen and Macy Armstrong rescued him with the help of folks posting his bail just hours before he would've shipped to Mexico to meet his demise. For the last 5 years of his life, Ernie lived a flourishing life of retirement, eating unlimited supplies of hay, green grass, tons of carrots, apples and cookies. He was loved unconditionally by his new family.
Having come to his new home, he was 1000 pounds underweight and starving. Medical evaluations determined a heart murmur. 2 years of good food, quality hay and lots of love, Ernie outgrew his heart murmur and was loving his new retirement life. Ernie was strong willed and resilient. He would let you know when he had enough and was quick to give you a great rub of his head on your back. He loved good scratches and being brushed down.
He will be missed at his farm, House on the Hill Farm in Cameron, NC.
He leaves behind his horse brothers, Poker and Sarge and 2 miniature donkeys, Waylon and Willie. He also leaves behind his favorite farm dog who looked up to him (quite literally) in the pasture, Milo. He also leaves behind Melodee, Kamree, Kooper, Mochie and Millie.
We know without a doubt that Ernie is running in lush green pastures with his horse friends. No more pain ole boy! Run free. We love you.
Ernie was laid to rest in his retirement pasture under the old oak trees.
The family would like to thank Dr. Mercier with Polaris Mobile Equine and Justin and Tori McLeod with 4Hooves Large Animal Rescue for their care and compassion with his transition.
