Mrs. Judith Inez Davis-Christie - January 16, 1959 - March 23, 2022

Departed: 03/23/2022 (Jesup)
Obituary Preview: Reflections of Life
Judith Inez Nell Davis Christie was born January 16, 1959, in Pompano, Florida into the loving family of the late Minnie Jewell and Angrish Lee “Pete” Davis. She expanded her love for family on October 12, 1992, when she married the love of her life Michael Christie. Together they raised Michael Jr., Tyrell, and Tedrick and infused them with the importance of knowing family and extended family.
”Nell” received her education from Nova High School in Fort Lauderdale and attended Broward Community College.
Nell was full of surprises and often took the road less traveled.  She was a business woman who held traditional and untraditional jobs. One of her first careers was driving tractor- trailers.  This skill served her well as she continually traveled the roads of Georgia, Florida, and Alabama taking care of and visiting family and friends. Always the entrepreneur, her business ventures included operating her own driving school where she gave private lessons. She opened Wayne Beauty Supply Store in Jesup, and she found other ways to showcase her skills.  But the road kept calling and she returned to her love of driving and served as a school bus driver for Wayne County Schools from 1994-2010. She took pride in whatever she did and often boasted of being one of the few people who could parallel park a bus.
Multi-talented, Judith liked to cook, eat, shop, fish, sew, braid, and attend family functions.  She could stretch a dollar. Not only did she make clothes for Tedrick and Tyrell, she insisted they wear the outfits to school.  At family cookouts, she never arrived with “swinging hands” but always showed up with a unique dish for all to taste. She enjoyed being able to host the Riley Davis Family Reunion in Brunswick, where the full array of her skills as a planner, decorator, and host were highlighted.
She was tall in stature and character. She was bighearted, caring, and meant what she said. If anyone needed something, she would try to be there one way or another. Her strength and resolve were most evident when she faced challenges.  It was then that she became resilient and motivated.
Judith became a member of Philadelphia Christian Center in Ft. Lauderdale and joined the Eternal House of Refuge when she moved to Jesup. She was always a faithful member who supported all of the church’s activities.
She was escorted from this life on Wednesday, March 23, 2022 in Jesup, Georgia following a long illness.  She was preceded in death by her brother Alvin Durane Davis, her sister, Cheryl, her best friend June Utley, her fathers-in-law George Spence and Douglas Christie.
She leaves to cherish her precious memory and celebrate her life: her husband Michael, her sons Tyrell Christie of Fort Lauderdale and Tedrick Christie of Jesup, and Michael Christie Jr. of West Palm Beach, Fl, and her grandchildren: Tyrell Davis, Ky’Anna Christie, Malaysia Christie, Lee’Yanna Christie, Renee Christie, and Riley Davis Christie (deceased). She will also be missed by her mother-in law, Theresa Spence; sisters-in-law: Claudette Glaze Butcher, Shellet Henry, Arrika Davis Carter, and brother-in-law Milton Christie; her aunts: Annie Jewell  Dismuke of Fort Lauderdale, Rosena Tippins, Louise Doomes , and Allene Davis of Jesup, Kay Davis of Atlanta, GA, Gay Davis of Valdosta, GA and her uncles Willie (Sandra) Davis of Beaufort, SC, Arthur Dennison of Fort Lauderdale and Billy Williams of Fort Lauderdale, “godfamily”: The Randolph Family, and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Graveside service will be 12:00 noon, Saturday, April 2, 2022, in the Odum City Cemetery, (Tillman Street, Odum, GA 31555), with Elder Milton J. Sease officiating.
Public viewing will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Friday, April 1, 2022, at the Community Chapel Funeral Home (2524 S US Highway 341, Jesup, GA 31546).

Mr. Daniel Perez Calderon - May 17, 1944 - July 09, 2021

Departed: 07/09/2021 (Jesup)
Obituary Preview: Daniel Perez Calderon was born, May 17, 1944 to the late Ana Canovanag Perez Isidro Perez San Turce, Puerto Rico, and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y., in the same area that produced boxing superstars Mike Tyson and Riddick Bowe. He departed this life on July 9, 2021.
Daniel was married to Iris Cruz, he was preceded in death by both parents, two children; Ana Luz Nieves and Elias Perez. He made his home in Brooklyn until early November, 1994, when he settled in Jesup. Perez said he first came to Jesup in 1989 with Richard Darden, whom he met in a mosque in Brooklyn, and now the Darden family has "adopted me." "This place makes me feel alive," said Perez. "I'm not used to this kind of treatment. I can sleep at night because there is no shooting. Now when I talk to my family in Puerto Rico or my friends in Morocco, all I can talk about is Jesup."
Perez began his boxing career at the age of 15 in New York as a 135-pound lightweight. In 1960, he won the New York citywide P.A.L. tournament championship. In 1961, Perez lost in the semi-finals of the Golden Gloves tournament, then in 1962 he won the Spanish Gloves championship. His last major amateur accomplishment was winning the Metro-AAU championship in 1963.
With an amateur record of 37-5 with 22 knockouts, Perez turned professional in April of- '1963. His first pro fight was April 30 at the old Sunny Side Gardens in Queens, and he won a third round TKO as a welterweight. "Boxing was good to me, but I can't take it with me," said Perez; "I loved to bounce around in the ring and that's what I want to instill into (the local youth). The youth here are healthy."
Perez said his largest boxing weight was 152 pounds and was ranked fifth at one time as a junior middleweight and eighth as a middleweight, though he never considered himself a full middleweiqht. He said he spent most of his career fighting 160 pounders.
As a professional fighter, his overall record was 34-16-2 with 18 knockouts. Perez said he fought in such places as England, Canada, Bermuda, Los Angeles, Oakland, Dallas, Philadelphia, Baltimore and his home of Puerto Rico. He considers his most famous opponents to be five-time middleweight champion Emille Griffin and world champion Curtis Cokes.
During his career, there was a 17-team youth baseball league in the Brooklyn area named after him. The most famous name to come out of that league was former New York Yankees Willie Randolph. Perez was also named in a 1971 edition of a boxing encyclopedia.
Of course Perez has met the legends of the sport such as Mohammed Ali and Joe Louis and was even introduced to a Madison Square Garden crowd before a fight between Buster Mathis and Joe Frazier.
Perez fought his last fight in Washington, D.C., in May of 1972 at the age of 28, and he said that for three years up to then he boxed when he could not see out of his left eye. "I just could not consider retiring," said Perez, now 65- year-old "teenager". "I can identify with George Foreman, Larry Holmes and Roberto Duran. It is hard to back away." As a boxer, Perez said the most he made in one fight was $8,800, which was considered top money in his fighting day. He said he can't argue with the big money boxers make today, considering the pain a fighter goes through both during and after a long fight.
Perez said there should be a pension for fighter.
"There has to be some kind of mechanism where they can take some from the purse and use for pension." He added that he knew of world champion fighters from the 1930s and 1940s who died in poverty. "Really, though, the money does not matter, its just being able to get into the ring." (Editor's note: Some information for this story came from an earlier article written for ·The Press-Sentinel by Matthew Brown.)
Daniel Perez and Barry Bergans opened Jesup Boxing Gym 123 Cherry Street.
Daniel was referred to Mossy Oak Assistant Living by Doctor Falk, who was his doctor for nearly 20 years. After several events of falls in his house, as well as a minor stroke, both falls in his house resulted with significant injuries enough to be hospitalized both times with head and chest wounds.
He leaves to cherish his memory, two daughters: Cathy Perez and Millie Perez; One, son, Daniel Perez; one sister, Conchita Carrasquillo, Bronx, New York; one brother, Jose R. Torres of Brooklyn, New York.
Visitation for the public to sign the register book will be from 9:00 a. m. until 5:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 13, 2021, and 9:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, July 14, 2021 at the Community Chapel Funeral Home.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It may also include information about their family, accomplishments, and funeral or memorial services.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to share the news of a loved one's passing with friends, family, and community members. They also provide a sense of closure and allow people to pay their respects to the deceased. Additionally, obituaries can be a valuable tool for genealogists and historians, providing insight into a person's life and legacy.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the family of the deceased or a close friend will write the obituary. However, it's not uncommon for funeral homes or crematories to offer assistance with writing and publishing obituaries as part of their services.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary should include the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief summary of their life. This may include information about their occupation, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. You may also want to include details about funeral or memorial services, as well as any charitable donations or tributes in lieu of flowers.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and the family's preferences. Typically, obituaries range from 100 to 500 words. It's essential to keep in mind that some publications may have word limits or charge by the line, so it's best to check with them beforehand.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only basic information such as their name, age, and date of death. An obituary, on the other hand, provides more detailed information about the person's life and legacy.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications allow you to include photos with the obituary. These can be recent photos or ones from throughout the person's life. Be sure to check with the publication beforehand to confirm their photo policies.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online publication?

The process for submitting an obituary varies depending on the publication. Some may accept submissions online, while others require you to email or fax the information. Be sure to check with the publication beforehand to confirm their submission guidelines.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication and its circulation. Some online platforms may offer free or low-cost options, while larger newspapers may charge by the line or word count.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, it's becoming increasingly common for people to write their own obituaries in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise that allows you to reflect on your life and legacy. Just be sure to store it in a safe place where it can be easily accessed by your loved ones when the time comes.

What if I don't have any family members to write my obituary?

If you don't have any family members or close friends who can write your obituary, consider reaching out to a trusted neighbor, colleague, or fellow community member. You may also want to consider pre-planning your funeral arrangements and including your obituary as part of those plans.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! While an obituary should be respectful, it's also okay to inject some personality and humor into the writing. This can help celebrate the person's life and make the reading experience more enjoyable for those who knew them.

What if I want to keep my loved one's passing private?

If you prefer not to publicly announce your loved one's passing through an obituary, you can still share the news with close friends and family through private channels such as social media or personal emails.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Yes! Quotes or lyrics that were meaningful to the deceased can add depth and personality to the obituary. Just be sure to properly cite any copyrighted material.

How do I handle multiple marriages or complex family relationships in an obituary?

This can be a sensitive topic, but it's essential to approach it with honesty and respect. Consider listing all spouses and children from previous marriages or relationships. You may also want to include step-children or other extended family members who were close to the deceased.

What if my loved one had no immediate family members?

In this case, you may want to focus on highlighting their friendships, community involvement, or accomplishments instead of traditional family relationships.

Can I include information about charitable donations in lieu of flowers?

Absolutely! Many families prefer that donations be made to a favorite charity or cause instead of sending flowers. Be sure to include specific details about how donations can be made.

How do I proofread an obituary for errors?

It's essential to carefully review the obituary for spelling mistakes, grammatical errors, and factual inaccuracies before submitting it for publication. Consider having multiple people review it before finalizing it.

Can I make changes to an obituary after it's been published?

This may be possible depending on the publication's policies. If you need to make corrections or updates after publication, contact the publication directly to inquire about their procedures for making changes.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe for publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication's schedule and deadlines. Online platforms may publish immediately, while print newspapers may take several days or even weeks.

Can I republish an obituary at a later date?

Yes! You may want to consider republishing an obituary on significant dates such as birthdays or anniversaries of your loved one's passing. This can help keep their memory alive and provide continued support for those who are grieving.

Are there any specific guidelines for writing an obituary for someone who was young or died unexpectedly?

Yes! When writing an obituary for someone who died young or unexpectedly, it's essential to approach the task with sensitivity and compassion. Focus on celebrating their life and achievements rather than dwelling on the circumstances of their passing.

Can I include information about funeral services in multiple locations?

If funeral services will be held in multiple locations, you can certainly include that information in the obituary. Be sure to provide clear details about dates, times, and locations for each service.

How do I ensure that my loved one's online presence is respected after they pass away?

This is an important consideration in today's digital age! Be sure to update social media profiles and other online accounts according to each platform's policies for handling deceased users' accounts.

Are there any resources available to help me write an obituary?

Yes! There are many online resources available that provide guidance on writing an effective and meaningful obituary. You may also want to consider consulting with a funeral home or crematory for assistance with writing and publishing your loved one's obituary.
