An obituary is a written notice of a person's death, often published in a newspaper or online. It typically includes a brief summary of their life, information about the funeral or memorial services, and may also contain a message of remembrance from the family.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a simple announcement of someone's passing, often giving minimal details like the name, age, and information about the funeral services. In contrast, an obituary is more detailed and includes a biography of the deceased, their accomplishments, and information about the family.

What should be included in an obituary?

An obituary should typically include the full name of the deceased, their age at the time of death, the date and place of their passing, a brief overview of their life story, details of the surviving family, funeral service details, and any preferred memorials or charitable donations in lieu of flowers.

Who writes an obituary?

Obituaries can be written by family members, friends, or the funeral home staff. Some individuals even choose to write their own obituaries in advance as part of their end-of-life planning.

How soon after a death should an obituary be published?

Obituaries are generally published as soon as the funeral arrangements have been made. This can be as soon as a day or two after the death, or it might take a week or more, depending on various factors such as family wishes, religious practices, or the publication's deadline.

Where are obituaries usually published?

Obituaries are typically published in local newspapers, on funeral home websites, and on dedicated online memorial sites. Some may also be broadcast on radio or television in special circumstances.

Is there a standard length for an obituary?

There is no standard length for an obituary, as it may vary from a brief death notice to a lengthy and detailed account of the person's life and legacy. However, longer obits may be costlier if published in print media, as most newspapers charge by the word or line.

Can an obituary include a photograph?

Yes, many obituaries include a photograph of the deceased, often showing them at a time when they were healthy and happy. The choice of photo is important, as it is how the community will remember the individual.

Is it necessary to mention the cause of death in an obituary?

Mentioning the cause of death in an obituary is a personal choice and is not required. Some families choose to include this information to provide closure or raise awareness about a particular illness or cause, while others prefer to keep it private.

How can an obituary be personalized?

An obituary can be personalized by including anecdotes, personality traits, hobbies, achievements, and relationships that were particularly important to the deceased. Quotations or poems that were meaningful to the individual or the family can also be incorporated.

Are obituaries reviewed before publication?

Yes, obituaries are usually reviewed by family members and by the staff at the publication where it will appear. This is to ensure accuracy and that the content meets any specific guidelines or standards required by the publication.

Should an obituary include details about the funeral?

Yes, obituaries often include details such as the date, time, and location of the funeral service, viewing, or wake. This information helps friends, relatives, and community members plan to attend and offer their support to the family.

Can contributions to charity be suggested in an obituary?

Absolutely. Many families choose to request that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to a charity that was significant to the deceased or to a cause that would benefit from such remembrance.

What is a memorial obituary?

A memorial obituary is published on the anniversary of a person's death or on significant dates. It serves as a way for families to honor their memory and to celebrate their life on special occasions, even years after they have passed away.

How does one go about submitting an obituary to a newspaper or website?

Most newspapers and websites have specific guidelines for submitting obituaries, which can often be found on their website or by contacting the publication directly. Generally, you will need to provide the written obituary, any desired photographs, and information about the publication schedule and fees.

Is there a cost to publish an obituary?

There is typically a cost associated with publishing an obituary in a newspaper. The fees can vary based on the length of the obituary, whether a photo is included, and the particular publication's rate structure. Many online obituary services offer free or lower-cost alternatives.

What is the purpose of an obituary?

The purpose of an obituary is to inform the community of a person's passing, celebrate their life, provide details of the funeral services, and serve as a historical record for future generations.

Can funeral homes assist in writing an obituary?

Yes, most funeral homes offer services to assist in writing and submitting obituaries to the appropriate publications as part of their arrangements.

How do obituaries handle sensitive information?

Sensitive information, such as the deceased's birthdate or home address, should be handled with care to prevent identity theft. It is wise to omit certain specifics that could put the estate or family's privacy at risk.

What can be done if a mistake is found in an obituary?

If a mistake is found in an obituary after publication, the family or the person responsible for the obituary can contact the publication to request a correction or an edited version be published as soon as possible.

In general, there are no legal requirements for publishing an obituary, as it is not a legal document. However, it's important to be truthful and respectful, as obituaries are public tributes to someone's life.
