Ronald C. Machen Sr. - July 21, 1930 - February 21, 2022

Departed: 02/21/2022 (Forest Park)
Obituary Preview: It is with extreme sorrow that we announce the passing of the beloved patriarch of our family, Ronald C. Machen Sr., 91.  He was the third son of Carolyn (Carrie) Machen and Harold Porter Machen, and was born in Chicago, Illinois at Cook County Hospital on July 21, 1930.  He had two older brothers, Harold and Howard Machen. Ron lived a full and impactful life.  Words can’t fully capture his character or the manner in which he lived his life but those that come to mind are brilliant, strong, compassionate, authentic, courageous, dependable, caring, honest, loyal, humble, persistent and resilient.
Ron graduated from Englewood High School in 1948 and loved to play all sports, but particularly football. After high school, he attended the University of Illinois where he was an outstanding student, a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity and a member of the football team.  He received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry from Illinois in 1952. Ron was a lifelong learner and never succumbed to societal constraints or expectations about his abilities even though he grew up in the pre-civil rights era. Following graduation, he volunteered to serve his country during the Korean War and joined the U.S. Air Force.  He was the only black man in his unit before he was honorably discharged due to a previously unknown heart condition.
It did not take long for Ron to return to one of his true passions in life --  learning and educating others.  He earned a Master of Science degree in analytical chemistry from The Ohio State University in 1963 and a PhD in analytical chemistry from Ohio State four years later. As a post doctorate student in chemistry, he was responsible for teaching undergraduate and graduate students. He then moved his family to Pennsylvania, where he worked for Sunoco Oil company.  However, his fondness for education and mentoring students was never far from his mind and he soon returned to higher education, securing a tenured position as a professor of chemistry at Delaware State University.  During this time as a professor, he often worked on special projects for NASA during summer breaks.  In 1978, he moved his family to Detroit, Michigan to become a chemist for Ford Motor Company. He worked at Ford until 1989 when he once again returned to Delaware State University as the Chair of the Chemistry Department.  During his career, Ron was a member of many professional organizations, including the American Chemical Society, where he served as Chairman, and the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers, where he served as President. He published numerous scientific articles in peer reviewed journals and was a frequent speaker at science and technology conferences around the country. He truly loved learning and teaching about science and chemistry, in particular.  He had a profound impact on the lives of countless students, most of whom were minorities, who were interested in pursuing careers in the science and technology fields.
Ron’s excitement for learning and teaching was only surpassed by his love for his family. He always put family first. He was a dedicated father, grandfather and husband who provided for and protected his family with fierce unwavering conviction.  He met Myrna Ferguson while he was in graduate school at Ohio State and they were married in 1962. From this union, which lasted over thirty years, two children, Margo and Ronald Jr., were born. Both Ron and Myrna prioritized their children’s education and rarely purchased expensive items or took vacations for themselves. Instead, they sent Margo and Ron Jr. to the best college prep schools in the state of Michigan -- the same schools where many of the top executives of Ford Motor Company and General Motors sent their children – which provided a strong educational foundation for their children’s professional careers. Ron did not exert pressure on his children to succeed, but instead instilled confidence in them that they could excel academically, athletically and socially with the best and the brightest of their peers. He taught and demonstrated to his children and later his grandchildren, how to treat everyone with respect, to be true to their word and to, most importantly, always give their best effort -- no matter how daunting the challenge. Ron provided his children with a loving, supportive environment that allowed his children to sometimes fail but never be defeated.
Ron was an avid sports fan who believed in healthy living and daily exercise. In particular, he loved to run and swim.  A former lifeguard in college and graduate school, Ron would often go on long swims in the ocean or the lake, frequently passing the outer boundaries for swimming. More than a few times, irritated lifeguards would have to go out on jet skis to tell Ron to swim back to shore. When he lived in Detroit, he would drive downtown every Sunday morning to run around Belle Isle Park for hours. Ron loved to cook and would repeatedly offer visitors food and drink whenever they came to the house. In his view, it was a cardinal sin for anyone to leave his house hungry, which made his household a favorite location for friends to visit. He loved the outdoors and anything to do with water; he especially liked to canoe and sail. He didn’t believe in spending money on a mechanic to change the oil, replace the brakes or tune up the car engine when he could do all of this himself.
A turning point in his life occurred when he met his beloved Ethel Lynch and they were subsequently married in 1997. They shared a unique and unbreakable bond. They were always together, even when performing mundane tasks such as going to the cleaners or the grocery store or to the doctor’s office. However, they most enjoyed taking long walks together, going to music festivals or movies and traveling out of state -- often times to spend quality time with their cherished grandchildren.
For the last five years, Ron battled dementia as it slowly robbed him of his mobility, speech and cognition, but it could not steal his spirit.  He fought the disease with grace, bravery and strength. He repeatedly surpassed doctors’ expectations about his longevity.  As was the case for the last 25 years, Ethel was by his side each and every day devoted to taking the most amazing care of Ron.  The family also received assistance from some outstanding care givers during this period including, Mary Poomah, Hema Krishnaraj, Amy Wagreich, Charlene Thornton and Yvonne Hampton.
Ron will always be remembered for his sharp mind, kind heart and passion for life. He had a unique ability to make everyone feel accepted, supported and special. He is now at peace joining his mother, father and two older brothers. He is survived by his wife, Ethel, his two children, Margo and Ronald Jr., his daughter-in-law Ayana and his three grandsons, Bijan, Jelani and Kadari.  He will be missed dearly.
“You never said I’m leaving, you never said goodbye.  You were gone before we knew it, and only God knew why.  A million times we needed you, a million times we cried. If love alone could have saved you, you never would have died. In life we loved you dearly, in death we love you still.  In our hearts you hold a place that no one could ever fill.  It broke our hearts to lose you, but you didn’t go alone.  For part of us went with you, the day God took you home.” Author Unknown.

Departed: 02/15/2022 (Forest Park)
Obituary Preview: Mary Ann Beuthin, a lifetime resident of Oak Park, passed away on February 15, 2022.  She earned degrees at Rosary College, now Dominican University, and at Loyola University, and worked for many years in banking and education.  At 50, she earned an associate degree in nursing and spent the rest of her career as a nurse. Mary Ann loved celebrations—holidays, birthdays, weddings, retirements—and planning for them.  Best of all, she could then wear “party shoes” instead of her everyday serviceable whites, and she could shop for gifts.  She was known by all as “the card lady,” often sending two or three greetings for the occasion.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It is usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They can help to notify people of the death, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and provide a sense of closure for those who are grieving.

Who writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by the family members or close friends of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. The writer will typically gather information from the family and create a draft, which is then reviewed and revised before publication.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include details about the funeral or memorial service, charitable donations in lieu of flowers, and any other relevant information.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and the family's preferences. Typically, an obituary ranges from 100 to 500 words, but it can be longer or shorter depending on the circumstances.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and funeral home websites allow you to upload one or multiple photos of the deceased to accompany the obituary. This can be a meaningful way to personalize the tribute and help others remember the person.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

To submit an obituary to a newspaper, you will typically need to contact the newspaper's obituary department directly. They will provide guidance on their submission process, including any specific requirements for format, length, and content.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, it is possible to write your own obituary in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise that allows you to reflect on your life and legacy. However, it's essential to keep in mind that your wishes may not be carried out exactly as you intend, so it's crucial to communicate your desires with your loved ones.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, typically including only the basic facts such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary, on the other hand, provides more detailed information about the person's life and legacy.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! While an obituary should be respectful and dignified, it's also okay to inject some humor or personality into the writing. This can help to capture the essence of the person and make the tribute more engaging and memorable.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The time it takes for an obituary to be published varies depending on the publication and their deadlines. Online obituaries can often be published within hours or days of submission, while print newspapers may have longer lead times.

Can I edit an obituary after it has been published?

In some cases, it may be possible to make minor corrections or edits to an obituary after it has been published. However, significant changes may not be feasible once the notice has gone live.

What if I want to keep my loved one's obituary private?

If you prefer not to publish an obituary publicly, you can still create a private tribute on a funeral home website or online memorial platform. This allows you to share information with family and friends while maintaining privacy.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Yes! Including meaningful quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and personality to an obituary. Just be sure to obtain any necessary permissions or credits for copyrighted material.

How do I find old obituaries?

You can search for old obituaries through online archives, genealogy websites, or local libraries. Many newspapers also maintain archives of past issues that can be searched digitally or in person.

Can I republish an old obituary?

In most cases, yes! If you have permission from the original publisher or copyright holder, you can republish an old obituary on a new platform or website.

What is a living obituary?

A living obituary is a biographical sketch written about someone while they are still alive. This can be a unique way to celebrate a person's life achievements and legacy while they are still with us.

Can I write an obituary for my pet?

Absolutely! Many people choose to write tributes for their beloved pets when they pass away. These can be shared online or in local pet-focused publications.

How do I handle errors or inaccuracies in an obituary?

If you notice errors or inaccuracies in an obituary, contact the publication or funeral home immediately. They will work with you to correct the mistakes as quickly as possible.

Can I include charitable donations in lieu of flowers in an obituary?

Yes! Many families choose to suggest charitable donations in lieu of flowers as a way to honor their loved one's memory and support a meaningful cause.

What is the purpose of an online guestbook?

An online guestbook allows friends and family to leave condolences, share memories, and pay tribute to the deceased. This can be a comforting way for mourners to express their feelings and connect with others who are grieving.

Can I save or print an online obituary?

Yes! Most online obituary platforms allow you to save or print a copy of the notice for personal keepsake or sharing with others.

How long do online obituaries remain available?

The duration that online obituaries remain available varies depending on the platform or website. Some may keep notices active indefinitely, while others may archive them after a certain period.

Can I create a video tribute instead of a written obituary?

Yes! Video tributes are becoming increasingly popular as a way to celebrate someone's life through images, music, and storytelling. These can be shared online or at memorial services.

Are there any specific guidelines for writing an LGBTQ+ inclusive obituary?

Yes! When writing an LGBTQ+ inclusive obituary, it's essential to use respectful language and acknowledge the person's identity and relationships. Consult with LGBTQ+ organizations or resources for guidance on creating sensitive and inclusive tributes.
