Geyer. She is survived by her children Joe (Sally) Szucs Jr., Mike (Cindy) Szucs, Cyndi Szucs and Patrick (Sharon) Szucs. Evelyn was the most amazing grandma to 12 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

Evelyn lived 98 remarkable years. The greatest legacy she leaves is the unbelievably happy memories that cannot be summarized in a handful of words. She will never be gone, for the lessons that she has taught us will remain with us always. Her songs, her sayings, her recipes - there quite possibly was nothing that she didn’t know how to do, no problem she couldn’t solve, no heart she couldn’t mend.

John was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers Gregory, Donald, and James Hatfield, and brother in law Mike Husen.

Joseph Anthony Gatto - January 28, 1931 - March 06, 2021

Joseph was born on January 28, 1931 in Chicago, IL to Joseph and Mary (Colantoinio) Gatto. He served his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean War and was a professor of Russian Language and Literature at the University of Notre Dame. Joe also served on the Board of Directors for the South Bend Housing Authority from 1967-1973, taught Italian at Forever Learning and volunteered with the Hope Rescue Mission and REAL Services. Joe never met a stranger and was always quick with a laugh and a song.

On September 11, 1954 in Tacoma, Washington he married the former Barbara Ann Engle. She died on July 1, 2018. Surviving are two daughters Suzanne (Emil) Gibbons and Mary (Bob) Gatto, a son Joseph (Tracy) Gatto, 7 grandchildren Jessica, Lindsay, Brian, Kayla, Bennett, Jay, and Emily, 3 great-grandchildren Wyatt, Dandy, and Cora, his significant other Vonnie Hering, sister Rosemary Turner and cousin Fred Colantonio.

Kevin J. McCombs - June 17, 1986 - February 28, 2021

Obituary Preview: South Bend – Kevin J. McCombs, 34, son of William (Deceased) and Anita (Mersits) McCombs of South Bend, passed away Sunday, February 28, 2021 in Benton County, Indiana. Kevin was a man of many hats and he accomplished many things in his short time with us. In 2003, as a senior at St Joseph’s High School, he graduated from the Clay Volunteer Fire Department Academy. In 2004, Kevin then graduated from St Joseph’s High School. He continued on at Clay Fire, while also working as a St. Joseph County Dispatcher, until he moved to West Lafayette to attend Purdue University. Kevin immediately joined The Wabash Township Fire Department and Purdue University Rescue Squad.

While serving at Wabash Township Fire Department, Kevin served as station resident, Public Information Officer, Sergeant, and Assistant Chief. In 2011 Kevin graduated from Purdue University with a degree in Aviation Technology and started working for Tippecanoe County Emergency Ambulance Service (T.E.A.S.). While working for T.E.A.S. Kevin put himself through Paramedic school. After obtaining his license, Kevin left T.E.A.S. in 2014 and began working as a Paramedic for Benton County EMS.

In 2019 he began serving the town of Boswell, as Town Marshall. Kevin graduated the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy Tier 2 and attended numerous police trainings including drug interdiction, cyber security, and interrogation. He continued to work as a Paramedic with Benton County EMS, a Reserve Deputy with the Benton County Sheriff’s Department, and a Public Information Officer for the Indiana District 4 Task Force. In 2020, Kevin joined the Boswell Fire Department as well.

In his limited free time, Kevin taught himself to be a DJ and earned a job with Rat Pack Mobile DJs in 2013. He worked for Rat Pak performing at countless weddings, college events, and dances in between shifts at the fire department and police station.

Kevin had a passion for flying since high school when he started taking lessons to obtain his private pilot’s license. While at Purdue, Kevin joined the Lafayette Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol as a mission pilot. He served in both search and rescue and flight operations. Kevin went on to get his helicopter pilot’s license after that.

Kevin was preceded in death by his Father William J. McCombs and Paternal grandparents James and Betty (Brown) McCombs.

He is survived by his Mother Anita M. McCombs, Brother Joseph McCombs (Lindsey), maternal grandparents Anthony and Helen Mersits. Also surviving are his Uncles Anthony Mersits (Melissa), John Mersits. Aunts Mary Larkins (Lee) and Lois Rehrer (Doug). Cousins Aaron (Nichole) Rehrer, Brittany Rehrer, Katelyn Mersits (Mike), Meredith Mersits, Amie (Anthony) Cowell and Sara Larkins. Also several other loving relatives.

The only thing larger than Kevin’s full-face smile was his heart and he gave it without caution to make the lives around him better.

Visitation will be held at St. Pius X Church, 52553 Fir Rd Granger, Indiana, 46530 on Friday, March 5, 2021 from 1:30pm - 4:00pm with mass to follow at 4:00pm.

Memorial contributions made in Kevin’s name, to Zahoran Funeral Home, will be used to provide wellness screenings for first responders in Indiana.

Kathryn was born February 23, 1928, in South Bend to Mary (Vida) Nagy and Louis Nagy. She graduated from Madison High School in 1946. She worked at Bendix, Carleton Financial, and later at Jo-Ann Fabrics. She married John Suppinger on April 11, 1953, at Our Lady of Hungary Catholic Church in South Bend.

She was known around town for her impeccable seamstress skills and tasty apple pies, bread, kolache, and kieflies. She bowled in leagues nearly every year from the age of 16 and continued the love of the game alongside her husband until 2020. They were members of the Guys and Dolls of Michiana dance club for almost two decades. She was constantly feeding the birds and stray cats while also boasting a wonderful green thumb that could sprout nearly anything from a twig. She was a long-time member of Holy Family Catholic Church where all three children were schooled and wed.

She is preceded in death by her parents Louis and Mary Nagy, her brothers: John Paul Nagy, Calman “Andrew” Nagy, and Frank Nagy; her sisters: Mary Christian, Rose VanBelleghem, Clarice “Gerri” Benjamin, and Helen Wilfing; and her son-in-law David Strickland.

Left to honor Kathryn are her husband John Suppinger, her sister Irene Szucs, children: Kathryn Strickland, Mary (Tom) Wright, and John (Sheryl) Suppinger, and grandchildren: Michael Strickland, Mary Strickland, Andrea Wright, Sam Wright, Chelsea Suppinger, Alexander Suppinger, and Ashleigh Suppinger.

Joseph D. Borton - July 18, 1969 - February 16, 2021

Obituary Preview: South Bend – Joseph “Joe” Borton, 51, son of Suzanne (Zwierzynski) Montalvo of Rochester and Dale (Lorainne) Borton of Walkerton passed away at 1:10pm Tuesday, February 16, 2021 in Memorial Hospital.

Joe loved being with his grandpa when he was young and working on cars among other things. It was only natural that after he graduated from Penn High School in 1988 that he would continue his education at Lincoln Technologies in Indianapolis. For many years he worked at his uncle’s service station as a mechanic. He continued as a mechanic at Piper’s Alley Auto in Mishawaka for 17 years. Not only was Joe a terrific mechanic, but he could fix just about anything. If he couldn’t figure it out, he would watch a YouTube video and teach himself. We could always call him for advice on our things that needed fixing.

Joe loved going to his dad’s to help him on his farm, he was great at fixing machinery, and coming to his mom’s house on the lake. He liked doing the sound effects for the boat parade floats. He also loved dogs, working on his home, helping friends and watching video movies.

Joe’s passing has saved two other lives and the sight of another as he was an organ donor. His date of death officially is 2-16-21, but on 2-18-21 he gave the gift of life to others. He is a hero for doing this and we know this would have made him happy and it gives us some comfort knowing that a part of him lives on.

Joe was preceded in death by his step-father Richie Montalvo, maternal grandparents Ted and Rose Zwierzynski, paternal grandparents James and Helen Borton, brother Ricky Montalvo, uncles Ted “Butchie”, Walter (Barb), Steven “Muggsy” and Don Zwierzynski, Howard (Cecelia), Jim (Linda), Keith (Ruby), Merle (Jan) and Carl Borton, aunt Iona (Lester) Cole, and his dog Kato.

He is survived by his parents, Suzanne Montalvo and Dale (Lorainne) Borton, sisters, Tina (David) Roe, Jacqueline Hostetler, and Cynthia (Jim) Groves, nephew Brendon (Sheridan) Roe, and great-niece Arya Roe, aunts and uncles Les (Dee Dee) Galloway, Jeanette Zwierzynski, Charlotte Zwierzynski, Lynn (Monica) Borton, Terry (Darlene) Borton, Zella (Furman) Luellen, Alma (Earl) Lafree and Glen (Pam) Borton, and numerous cousins and second cousins.

Ann M. Pados - July 06, 1927 - February 12, 2021

Obituary Preview: Ann Maria Pados was born July 6, 1927 in Vasszentmihaly, Hungary to her parents Karoly Pall and the former Vilma Kovach. Following the ravages from World War II in Europe, she married Ferenc Pados in 1951, and gave birth to daughter Emilia two years later.

After the Hungarian Revolution in 1956, the family immigrated to the United States as refugees and became naturalized citizens while making their home in South Bend for more than 60 years.

Preceding her in death were her husband in 1985, daughter in 2012 and her parents and her three siblings, Ilona, Maria and Ferenc, who resided in Hungary.

An extraordinarily tough woman who climbed her garage roof well into her 80s to make repairs, she was physically fit with a daily exercise regimen that included biking, swimming or calisthenics. One of her favorite activities was walking a few miles to and back from Rum Village Park.

A devout Catholic and long-time parishioner of Our Lady of Hungary in South Bend, Ann loved traveling throughout the country and Europe, and was a voracious reader while learning the English language well. She was an exceptional cook, a caretaker to many, had a soft heart for animals, charitable, candid and well-versed on numerous topics, especially world history. She was devoted to her special needs daughter to help make her independent, and also was a huge supporter of Logan Industries and Special Olympics.

Survivors include nephew Frank Leopold (Judy) of Rockford, Ill.; niece Margit LeClair of Janesville, Wis.; and nephews Geza, Laszlo, Ferenc and Tamas in both Hungary and Germany. Also residing in Hungary and Europe are cousins, and an especially special bond was formed with Csilla Gyarmati. Ann leaves behind numerous close friends in South Bend who kept a watchful eye on her as she battled blindness and other health setbacks in recent years, but still lived on her own in her home.

On September 7, 1957 in Our Lady of Hungary Church he married the former Mary Klebusits, a marriage that endured 63 years.. She surviives, along with a daughter Mary Lynn (Scott) Wurster, four sons Joseph Marozsan, Karl Marozsan Jr., Thomas (Jennifer) Marozsan and Patrick (Dawn) Marozsan, 7 grandchildren Lindsay (Chris) Eastman, Adam Wurster, Stephen Marozsan, Jonathan Marozsan, Jacob Marozsan, Wyatt Marozsan, and Casey Reed, a great-grand-daughter Madison Rose Wurster, sister Beverly Marozsan, aunt Adeline Marozsan and several cousins.

Most of all she loved her children and will be dearly missed by both.

William M. Phillips - June 27, 1936 - January 18, 2021

Obituary Preview: William M. Phillips Sr., 84, passed away at 9:30am Monday, January 18, 2021 in St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Mishawaka. He was infected with covid-19, and so he passed on in a room unfamiliar to him, being cared for by people dressed in ways that confused him. His final days were lonelier than necessary. He was not surrounded by family and friends.

Bill was born on June 27, 1936 in South Bend to William and Christine (Walkowiak) Phillips whose grandparents immigrated to America from Hungary through Ellis Island, on the Ship Carpathian the sister ship of the Titanic. Bill believed in the chief teachings of the Catholic Church and received his elementary education from Our Lady of Hungary and St Matthews where he was warmly devoted to his faith in God, including up until the day he died, his rosary by his side.

Bill retired from Uniroyal, a manufacturer of Tires and Rubber and the largest employer in Mishawaka. He loved his career at Uniroyal and had won many awards for his unique way of coming up with new solutions to problems. He belonged to the American Society of Tool and Manufacturing Engineers (ASTME). After the plant was tore down, he loved to visit the old site where a memorial had been erected, in its place. After retirement, Bill was a people person, and so he managed two popular Notre Dame establishments The Boat Club and Finnegans Lounge, where he loved conversing with the ND students, and they him -- he also was a coin and gun collector. Bill spent many day and night in the garage, wrenching on an old classic car or two, where he loved having his kids next to him in the earlier days, running for tools and showing them the basics of automobile restoration.

Bill graduated from Washington High School, South Bend in 1956. During these years, he was on the Varsity Track team where he had won numerous awards in High Jump, and his Varsity Football team won the 1954 State Championship. Bill was also an original member of the Jokers Club of Washington High School, where summer reunions continued throughout many years, and included life-long friends, lots of BBQ and corn on the cob, and always a game of jarts or two.

Surviving are daughters Shelly Lynn Phillips, Kimberly Ann Fox and stepdaughter Janice Spiek, 8 grandchildren Brandon Grossnickle, Michelle Grossnickle Russell, Tahnee Pinkston, Coty and Josh Phillips, Johnny and Dillon Barrier and Heather Spiek. 7 great-grandchildren Briar-Rose, Carter, Adelynn, Isabelle, Breana, Evelyn, and Audri, a sister Debbie Phillips, his first wife Judith Ham and close family friend Mike Banicki. Obituary Preview: When Marge Dudeck rolled peacefully into heaven in the wee hours of January 13, 2021, she likely did it the way she lived: with style, sass, a great big smile and, most characteristically, giving a whole lotta love to everyone who was there to greet her.

Its no exaggeration to say that Marge was a local music legend. The 1950s show, "Hoosier Favorite", gave Marge a big break alongside Joe Kelly and Bruce Saunders as they lip synced to the days top hits. She then went on to perform in local piano bars and supper clubs. It was her celebrated stint at downtown South Bends Club Lido where she acquired the name Fabulous Marge, a moniker she claimed to dislike, but amusingly embraced. She performed with many local talents, including legendary drummer Billy "Stix" Nix, Bryan Barr, Larry Brucker, and Conner Stigner. She was the featured performer with Paul Jones at the Round Oak in Dowagiac, Michigan until her retirement a few years ago. Marge also served as the organist at Our Lady of Hungary Church, her life-long parish, a special place where, as a young girl, the nuns nurtured her musical talents. Facebook posts mentioning Marge are replete with accounts of devoted followers driving through blizzards to see her perform, of fond stories of her playing weddings and funerals, and of memories of loyal fans who became friends.

Indeed, Marge was something special. She could play hundreds of songs from memory upon request and entertain and engage a crowd with quick witted banter. She had impromptu parties on her porch with neighbors, where she held court from her wooden swing. Even at 85, she continued to embrace people of all ages and backgrounds as friends. She was the type of person you could totally be yourself around. Marge would not only listen to you, but she could most often find a way to relate to and even celebrate you. Shed straight-up tell you (usually in colorful but enduring language) if she disagreed with you. Then, in the next breath, shed tell you that she loved you, whatever your quirks.

Marges journey through this life began on August 6, 1935 when she was born in South Bend to Michael and Victoria (Slavist) Wukovich. They, along with her brother, Fred Wukovich, preceded her to heaven. She graduated from Our Lady of Hungary School and South Bend Catholic High School. Her great loves and prides were her family: daughters Kristi (Tom) Richard and Victoria "Tori" Dudeck (Rob Markovich) and sons Michael Dudeck and Thomas (Debbie) Dudeck. Eight grandchildren: Andrea, Julia, Vanessa, Adam, Cassidy, Nicole, Vince, and Brett, along with five great-grandchildren: Julius, Lola, Kai, Alex and King. She also loved her daughter-in-law, Gina Dudeck.

Consummate performer that she was, Marge continued to entertain with performances at St. Pauls in South Bend, where she lived the last few years. She brought joy to residents who delighted in hearing the songs they recalled from their youth. In her later years, she gabbed on the phone daily with her buddies Angie and Mary and enjoyed outings with friends Carol and Larry. The lyrics of Billy Joels "Piano Man" perfectly summarize the joy she shared as a music professional. But describing her as a beloved mom, grandma, and friendwell, we tried to convey that here, but her love, her uniqueness, really just defies words. We are all so grateful to have had this strong, vibrant, smart, hilarious, and loving woman in our lives. She leaves an indelible mark on our community and, more importantly, our hearts. You had a fabulous run, dear Marge!

Lillian resided on Diamond Lake in Cassopolis, MI for 41 years and retired from the Cassopolis School District as a secretary at the Vandalia School. She was the past President of the Hungarian Womens Democratic Club, Kiwanis Auxiliary and the Covilla Auxiliary. She was very proud of her Hungarian heritage and spoke Hungarian fluently as her first language. She danced at the Hungarian "Harvest Dances" at the Cherry Hall which was the social hall of the former Hungarian Presbyterian Church on West Washington Street in South Bend. She enjoyed meeting and sharing memories with her friends from her high school graduating class and was always the happiest when surrounded by her family and loved ones. It was her wish to be cremated and have her remains interred next to her parents and sisters. A celebration of her life will be scheduled in the future. His Mother Agnes, got a petition, to bring Joseph back to the United States, as he was the last remaining Verash. He declined to return, vowing to remain with his Battalion until the War ended.

After the War, Joseph Married Fern Kobold, on June 25, 1946. They had 3 sons, Larry, Lewis, and Ronald. Joseph worked for the Railroad for 20 years. After a short time at South Bend Foundry, Joseph worked at General Telephone for 30 years. He retired in 1996. During his Retirement, Joseph took in stray animals, Dogs and Cats, and cared for them like one of his kids.

In addition to his Brothers, Joseph had a Sister, Helen. She passed away in 2007. His wife Fern passed away in 2003.

Surviving are sons, Larry, Lewis {Sharon}, and Ronald {Rhonda}. Grandchildren Kris, Katrina, Kyle, Amanda, Courtney, Rhiannon, and Karly. And 14 Great Grandchildren. His Daughter in law, Sue Verash, passed away in 2010.
