Obituary Preview: Andrew Neal John passed away on March 31, 2022, with his family by his side. He was born on December 21, 1971, in Weirton WV, son of the late “Johnny John” and Sheila (Conrad) John of Burgettstown who survives.
Andrew graduated from Burgettstown High School in 1990. After graduating he joined the United States Navy from 1990 to 1994. On December 7, 1991, he married his loving wife Shelby John.
He worked for United Parcel Service for 27 years in Washington PA with many co-workers. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, Pittsburgh Steelers, Pittsburgh Penguins, and most importantly the Burgettstown Blue Devils. Andrew loved watching his boys and nephews play all sports.
He courageously fought his battle with cancer for a year with his family and friends by his side every step of the way, and he is now at peace.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife Shelby John, children Chelsey (Andrew) Krull, Jeremy, and Jarred (Addie), brother Matthew (Deb) John of Burgettstown, and their children Blaine and Wyatt, sister-in-law Stacey (Roy) Lounder of Burgettstown and their children Ryan and Jake, and mother-in-law Peggy Niedzialkia.
He is preceded in death by his grandparents Edmond and Mary Ann Conrad, aunt Marty Battista, and father-in-law George Niedzialkia. Obituary Preview: Larry N. Richards, 62, of Avella PA passed away on March 29, 2022. He was born on February 13, 1960, in Wellsburg WV son of the late Frances and Elva Richards.
After graduating from High School he married Karen Richards and worked maintenance at Western Area Votech, he also worked for Weirton Steele for 37 years.
His pride and joy was his granddaughter Kayla “cupcake”. He was an avid Steelers fan, loved his friends and family, and his companion Remi.
In addition to his parents, Larry is preceded in death by his sisters Caroline, Letty, Dolores, and Paula, and nephew Jason.
He is survived by his wife Karen Richards, daughters Nicole (fiance Rich), Michelle, Gerri, and Meghan (Steve), nieces Julie, Bonnie, and Missy, nephews Darrell, and Mike, grandchildren Makayla, Molly, and Harley, along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

David Russell Ford - June 22, 1948 - March 21, 2022

Obituary Preview: David Russell Ford, 73, of Burgettstown PA, lost his battle with ALS on March 21, 2022. He was born on June 22, 1948, in Clarksburg, W.V. He was a 1966 graduate of Burgettstown Area High School. After graduating he served with the U.S. Naval Mobile Construction Battalion Fifty-Eight (Seabees) in Vietnam from 1968 to 1970. David was a member of the Richard Vaux Masonic Lodge 454. His career was in the trucking industry, with most of his time as an owner/operator. He was very involved as a pit crew member of super late model dirt track racing at Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway. Dave enjoyed restoring classic and antique Ford trucks.
David is survived by his wife of 51 years, Cheryl (Findling) Ford, and son Scott Ford (Maria and daughter Ruby), three sisters Diana Myers, Ruth (Robin) Brown, and Kathy Burns, sister-in-law Patricia Findling, nephew John Findling (Renee and daughters), niece Jenna Zeh (Tim and daughters), and nephew Jared Findling (Evelyn and daughter and son).
He is preceded in death by his parents Russell and Eva Lee Ford, and his in-laws Betty Findling and John Findling Sr. & Jr.

Obituary Preview: Lawrence Henry Polen, Sr., age 88, of Burgettstown died Tuesday, March 15, 2022, in Orlando Regional Medical Center, Florida. He was born on July 31, 1933, in Wheeling, West Virginia, the son of the late Craig Polen and Margaret Burris.
Lawrence served in the United States Army and then worked at Weirton Steel Mill as an electrician foreman. He retired in April 1983.
Besides his parents, preceding Lawrence in death was his wife Gertrude Polen, son Lawrence Polen, Jr., and son-in-law, Gary Reed.
Lawrence is survived by his loving, long-time companion Patricia Smith, daughter Noreen Reed, son Michael (Robin) Polen, ‘adopted daughter’ Lori Calhoun, as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Lawrence also leaves behind a sister, Norma, and brothers Robert and William.
Lawrence enjoyed spending time with family and working around the house. He continually kept himself busy, with yard work and home maintenance projects. Known to many as Larry, he had an extraordinary talent for woodworking that never ceased to amaze those around him. With only a picture or an idea in mind, he crafted things big and small with the finest of details and finishing touches. He was an incredibly gifted and admired woodworking artist.
More than anything, Lawrence / Larry loved helping others. He would do anything, for anyone. A ‘snowbird’ who traveled to Florida for the winters, he had friends far and wide who not just liked him – but utterly adored him. To so many, he was nothing short of an angel on earth.
A private service will be held for immediate family at a later date.

Warren retired from Lanxess. He loved working on cars, playing guitar, riding quads, spending time with his family, friends, and his grandchildren.
He lived in Burgettstown with his companion Lori Orison. He is survived by his loving children Warren Young, Warren Brown Jr. (Jennifer Phillip), Jason Young, Justin Brown, Latasha Brown, Meliesha Brown (Ronald Fletcher), Travis Brown, Tre Brown, James Brown, Teresa Cook, and Petey Cook, siblings Robert Brown, Ralph Brown and Cindy Brown.
In addition to his mother he is preceded in death by his three brothers Ronald Brown, Donald Brown, and James (Jimmy) Brown.

E. Shirley Pearce Romestan - August 02, 1933 - February 16, 2022

Obituary Preview: E. Shirley (Pearce) Romestan, 88, of Burgettstown, went to be with her Lord and Savior Wednesday, February 16, 2022.
She was born August 2, 1933, in Monessen, PA, daughter of the late William and Ethel Pearce.
A graduate of Rostraver High School, she married the late Melvin Romestan in 1952, and celebrated 59 years together.
Mrs. Romestan, a former member of Burgettstown Presbyterian Church, was a gifted Sunday school teacher and coordinator of Vacation Bible School.   In later years she wrote and directed dramas that the church performed, as well as making the costumes.  Mrs. Romestan enjoyed quilting, embroidery, and crocheting throughout her adult life.  In addition, she and her husband enjoyed doing woodworking projects together.  Being a foster parent to several children was another way in which Mrs. Romestan shared her love of caring for people.
Surviving are three daughters, Rowene Romestan of Murrysville, Karen Romestan of Dallas, Texas, and Sherry (Martin) Puskar of Cranberry Township; six grandchildren, Ashley (Gary), Casey, Alana, Joshua (Natalia), Jesse, and Taylor; four great-grandchildren, Emma, Erica, Gary and baby girl Puskar due April; a sister, Dolores (Ken) Cekus and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by a sister Sarah Stangroom and three brothers, Richard, James, and Edward Pearce.
Friends will be received from 10 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Monday, February 21, 2022, with service immediately following at Young Funeral Home & Cremation Services Inc., 23 Erie Mine Road, Burgettstown, PA 15021. Interment will follow in Mt. Prospect Cemetery, Hickory.

Elsie was born November 21, 1941, at home in Joffre, PA to the late Anthony and Agnes (Slak) Patterson.
Elsie loved to watch her grandsons play football and wrestle and her granddaughter's dance and cheer.
Elsie was an avid sports fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and loved listing to the Pirates on the Radio.  Elsie also loved to listen to the polkas on the radio. She was an active member of Saint Ann’s Catholic Church in Bulger, PA Elsie married Michael R. Hucik on January 30, 1960, in Our Lady of Lourdes, Burgettstown, PA
Surviving Elsie are daughter Linda (Robert) Goff of Canon, Ga, Mary (Arther) Wilkins of Atlasburg, Pa Michael (Tammy) Hucik of Windber, PA, Joe Hucik from Joffre, PA and Deana Hucik from Burgettstown Pa.

He was born to parents John and Valera Bowland on May 30th, 1955 in Washington, Pennsylvania.
He worked many years at holiday inn in the maintenance department and also spent many years as a caregiver for his eldest son Robert. He truly enjoyed being a father, grandfather and the simple things in life. He enjoyed casinos, a good cigar, music and fixing odds and ends.
Richard is survived by his son Jesse Bowland (daughter in-law Monica Bowland), two loving grandchildren, close family friend Joshua DeLong, sister’s Valera Menke and husband, Brenda Carter and husband, Vivian Abbott and husband, Pamela Bowland, and brother John Bowland and wife. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Valera Bowland, sons Robert and Joshua Bowland, sister Betty Abbott, and brothers Jackie Bowland and Charles Bowland.

Pete Maropis - September 27, 1925 - December 16, 2021

Obituary Preview: Pete Maropis, 96, passed away peacefully in his Burgettstown home on December 16, 2021, with his loving wife and best friend for the past 69 years, Marguerite, at his side. Pete was the son of Speros and Argero Maropis who migrated to the U.S. in the early 19th century from the island of Crete, Greece. Pete was born in Langeloth, PA, on September 27, 1925. He was a graduate of Union High School, Class of 1943, distinguishing himself academically as well as in athletics. Following graduation, he enlisted in the US Coast Guard and served as a radioman aboard search and rescue seaplanes in the Pacific until the end of WW2. After receiving an honorable discharge, he was offered football scholarships to the University of Georgia and St. Mary’s College in California. He declined those offers and chose instead to attend Alliance College in Cambridge Springs, PA along with several high school teammates. At Alliance, he excelled in football, basketball, and baseball, eventually signing a professional baseball contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Starting in Class B, Davenport, Iowa, and in spite of the two and a half years he spent in the military, he advanced to the Pirates’ Class AA affiliate in New Orleans, LA. At that time, and due to his age, he decided he needed stability in his life and married his hometown sweetheart, Marguerite Martinez on August 11, 1952.
Following his professional baseball career, Pete accepted a position with an athletic equipment reconditioning company, Ivory Systems, which became All-American Medalist, and is now Riddell Sports. In a short time, Pete advanced to regional manager, a position that lasted until his retirement.
Pete was predeceased by his parents, his son, Pete, and four brothers: Angelo, Chris, Nick, and George. He is survived by sons Mike (Debbie) and Patrick(David Butler) and daughter-in-law Kathy, grandchildren Pete, Matthew (Kayla), Michal Jane (Joseph) Newman and Derek (Brooke), and great-granddaughter Mia. Surviving, in addition to immediate family members, is a sister, Freida Sprando, a brother, Petro (Despina), and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends. May his memory be eternal and his soul rests in eternal peace. Richard (Rick) Matalik - October 27, 1967 - December 13, 2021

Obituary Preview: Richard (Rick) Matalik, 54, of Canonsburg died unexpectedly on December 13, 2021, in St. Clair Hospital. He is the beloved son of Bob and Freddie Matalik of Burgettstown.  After graduating from Burgettstown High School in 1986, Rick went on to technical school at Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics. He very much enjoyed his work as an aircraft mechanic/inspector and all of the friends and co-workers that he met along the way.   Over his 20+ year career that he enjoyed so much, he chased airline jobs to Hagerstown, MD, Charlotte, NC, Pittsburgh, PA, back to Charlotte, NC, and finally back to Pittsburgh. Yes, we moved a lot. In his spare time, Rick enjoyed many beach vacations up and down the east coast.    Surprisingly, we almost always went by car. Coincidentally, his final family vacation was to Kitty Hawk, NC – where aviation first began.
He will be forever missed by his wife, Shelley, of 29 years and son, Ryan who is 12.      Rick is also survived by his parents, Bob and Freddie Matalik of Burgettstown, sister Jill Walters of Ohio, brother Bob (Brenda) Matalik of South Carolina,  in-laws John and Ricki Shimon of Bulger, PA,  brother-in-law, and friend Jeff (Pam) Shimon of Florida, and brother-in-law Eric (Kiesha) Shimon of West Virginia, along with several nieces and a nephew. At the request of the family, no flowers please.
To all of his extended family, many friends present and past, softball teammates from back in the day, co-workers and acquaintances, know that he cared for each and every one of you even if he didn’t always say it.
A graveside service will be held at Robinson Run Cemetery, McDonald, PA where he will finally be able to get some rest. Forever in our hearts… we love you. Adelene was married to the late William Gehrke of 65 years, together they had two daughters.
Adelene enjoyed polka dancing, creating art, and being a loving grandmother and great-grandmother.
She is survived by daughters Susan Hutchinson (Frank), and Lisa Phillis (Ralph), grandchildren Elizabeth, Francis (Kayla), Eric, Nicholas (Chelsie), Melissa (Matthew), and Seth, and great-grandchildren Talon, Lilianna, Frankie, Reed, Olivia, Ryan, Rory, and Rivers.

Obituary Preview: James A. Reedy, 78, of Burgettstown PA, passed away after a two-month illness in Allegheny General Hospital on December 8, 2021. James was born on August 10, 1943, son of Claire Reedy and Hilda G. Wagner. He was a 1961 graduate of Fort Cherry High School. After High School, he married Sally Reedy the love of his life and best friend for 60 years.
James became a Mechanical Foreman at Testa Machine Company, where he had worked for over 30 years.
He enjoyed going on walks, being a jack of all trades, and volunteering at the Burgettstown Kids Center for many years.
James was known as ‘Pap’  to every child in Burgettstown, being a pap meant the world to him. He will be truly missed by all who knew him.
He is preceded in death by his mother Hilda Wagner and brother Robert Reedy.
Survived by wife Sally Reedy, son James (MaryAnn) Reedy, grandchildren Jim, Joe, and Julia, brothers Wes (Susan) Reedy of MI, and Dave (Donna) Reedy of CO, sister Bonnie (Mike) Kolano of CO, sister-in-law Nancy Reedy of FL, and several nieces and nephews. Obituary Preview: Shirley J. Walker, 89, of Hickory, died Tuesday, October 26, 2021, at Southmont Senior Care.
She was born March 7, 1932, in Venice, a daughter of the late Roy and Teresa Adams Schurr.
She was a member of the Mount Pleasant Township Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed many hours of preparing for and working at the infamous Hickory Apple Festival.  Shirley was an avid bowler, she enjoyed traveling with friends to bowl in the USBC Women’s Championship tournaments for a consecutive 30 years.  She was inducted into the Washington County Bowling Hall of Fame in 2017.
She worked multiple years for Hickory Transport as a school bus driver.
Surviving are her children, Connie Stanish, Karen Ferragonio, Susan (Troy) Ward, and Tim Walker; her grandchildren Jeffrey, Kiley, Christopher, Karissa, Shelby, TJ, Shawn, Cody, Harley, and Hunter, and 9 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jay M. Walker, and sister, Naomi Bistarkey.

Preceded in death by husband Charles (Chub) Mader, sisters Ida "Dorty" Gillespie, Peg Barezinsky, Verna Galownia, and brothers Eugene Davis and Don Davis.
Survived by brother, Bob (Debbie) Davis, of Eldersville, and children, Pam Conrad of Cross Creek; Shelley (James) Johnson of Ingram, Shawn Mader of Washington, PA, and grandsons Jay (Danielle) Conrad of McDonald, and James Johnson and Charles Johnson of Pittsburgh and two great-granddaughters, Adilynn Faye Conrad and Melody Rose Johnson.
Known as Jenny, or Gina, she was a devout Christian and loving mother.  Helping around her residence came naturally.  She was popular for sharing homemade goodies with her friends.  Doing for others made her happy and she liked to laugh.
Interment will be on Saturday, October 16, 2021, at 11 am at Bethel Church Cemetery, Eldersville, PA, with a luncheon immediately following, at the Burgettstown Presbyterian Church, 1325 S Main St, Burgettstown, PA  15021.   Donations in her honor can be sent to Special Olympics. On June 11, 1965, Charles married the late Linda Diamond Kennedy of 56 years.
He worked as a truck driver for Sutherland Lumber, Smith Trucking Services, and at the end of his career, he drove trucks with his son for Kennedy Excavating.
Charles enjoyed hunting, auctions, driving trucks, county fairs, and most of all spending time with his children and grandchildren.
In addition to his wife Linda and parents, he is preceded in death by one brother Llyod (Bud) Kennedy, and a daughter-in-law Cindy Kennedy. He worked for United Parcel Service for 27 years in Washington PA with many co-workers. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, Pittsburgh Steelers, Pittsburgh Penguins, and most importantly the Burgettstown Blue Devils. Andrew loved watching his boys and nephews play all sports.
He courageously fought his battle with cancer for a year with his family and friends by his side every step of the way, and he is now at peace.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife Shelby John, children Chelsey (Andrew) Krull, Jeremy, and Jarred (Addie), brother Matthew (Deb) John of Burgettstown, and their children Blaine and Wyatt, sister-in-law Stacey (Roy) Lounder of Burgettstown and their children Ryan and Jake, and mother-in-law Peggy Niedzialkia.
He is preceded in death by his grandparents Edmond and Mary Ann Conrad, aunt Marty Battista, and father-in-law George Niedzialkia. She will be dearly missed.
On October 24, 1971, Sylvia married the love of her life and childhood sweetheart, Edward Bittner, and they were happily married for 40 years until his death in March 2012. Although she did not have children of her own, she was blessed to have the love of many nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless friends. Left to cherish her memory is her best friend and sister, Velma Jean (Karl) Snyder; nieces, Erma McCloskey, Joann (John) McKee, Arlene (Steve) Allison, Susan (Bill) Dearth, Beverly Filip, and Nancy (Marty) Cwynar; nephews, Allan (Jeannette) Bittner, Raymond Bittner, Joey Bittner, and John (Linda) Meehan; goddaughters, Patty Ann (Matthew) Harmon and Lauri Alt; godson, Michael (Raquel) McKee; and many more great and great-great nieces, nephews and cousins. She will especially be missed by her great-niece, Melissa (Craig) Ibella, and ‘her girls’; great-great nieces, Lydia and Bianca Ibella, who brought her so much joy.
In addition to her husband, Sylvia is preceded in death by her parents Vendel and Agnes Popp; sisters, Mary Galish, Irene Meehan, and Agnes Bittner; brothers, John, Mike, and Vendel Popp; her beloved niece, Phyllis Popp Downs and her godson, Cameron Ibella.

He was a 1966 graduate of Burgettstown Area High School. After graduating he served with the U.S. Naval Mobile Construction Battalion Fifty-Eight (Seabees) in Vietnam from 1968 to 1970. David was a member of the Richard Vaux Masonic Lodge 454. His career was in the trucking industry, with most of his time as an owner/operator. He was very involved as a pit crew member of super late model dirt track racing at Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway. Dave enjoyed restoring classic and antique Ford trucks.
David is survived by his wife of 51 years, Cheryl (Findling) Ford, and son Scott Ford (Maria and daughter Ruby), three sisters Diana Myers, Ruth (Robin) Brown, and Kathy Burns, sister-in-law Patricia Findling, nephew John Findling (Renee and daughters), niece Jenna Zeh (Tim and daughters), and nephew Jared Findling (Evelyn and daughter and son).
He is preceded in death by his parents Russell and Eva Lee Ford, and his in-laws Betty Findling and John Findling Sr. & Jr.
