Jane Ellen Schmitz - December 08, 1974 - March 24, 2024

Departed: 03/24/2024 (Fresno)
Obituary Preview: Jane Ellen Schmitz
December 8th, 1974 – March 24th, 2024.
Jane was born on a cool but sunny day on December 8th, 1974, in San Dimas California, to Maurice and Claudia Schmitz. Jane is survived by her wife and love of her life, Meg Marks, along with her older sister Roxie Phillips nee Schmitz, her brother-in-law Christopher Phillips, her nieces Chloe and Zoe Phillips, and younger sister Katie Schmitz. Jane grew up on the Central Coast of California and always had a smile and a twinkle in her eyes that showed her love for life. As a child Jane loved spending time helping her father with his business, Maurice Sign and Design. With him she learned to repair and build virtually everything. Her mother, Claudia, shared her love of Chinese food and cooking with Jane. Jane loved growing up in San Luis Obispo and it was one of her favorite places.
Jane had a thirst for knowledge that was never satisfied as she was committed to a lifetime of learning. Jane graduated from San Luis Obispo High School and earned a place on the Girls’ Varsity Soccer, Swimming, and Track teams.
Jane knew early on that she wanted to work in nature which led to her decision to be a firefighter and prepared herself for a life of service to her community. Jane attended Allen Hancock College and earned an Associate of Arts in Fire Science and completed Fire Academy in 1998.
In pursuing her education goals and due to her sense of justice, she attended Columbia Southern University and earned a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice Administration on August 15th, 2014. She was committed to continuous self-improvement and was accepted as a member of the National Society of Leadership and Success, Sigma Alpha Pi in 2018.
Jane entered the fire service in 1998 with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CDF then, but now known as CAL FIRE). She was assigned to the Cayucos Station where she learned the beginnings of firefighting, fire prevention, and educating the public. Throughout Jane’s career she remained committed to serving the communities that she lived and worked in. Her efforts were instrumental in the saving of lives and property. Jane further served California taxpayers while working in Civil Cost Recovery holding people and companies responsible for their negligence, incompetence, or flagrant disregard for the safety of others.
Jane had a strong sense of justice and fairness which lead her to take up the challenge of Fire Investigator in 2007 and was instrumental in solving numerous arsons and the Dystiny Myers homicide in 2010. Jane received a Commendation from the District Attorney of San Luis Obispo for her efforts in identifying and preserving evidence for this case and the subsequent arson meant to cover up the crime. Jane also investigated many large wildland fires all over California as well as local fires including the 2014 Courtney fire in Oakhurst CA, which destroyed thirty-three homes.
Jane retired from the fire service in 2019 as the city of Atwater, California, Battalion Chief and Fire Marshal with twenty-one years of continuous service and dedication to the citizens of the state of California. Jane had received the Cal Fire Director’s Award for Excellence in Law Enforcement for her efforts in the apprehension and conviction of two serial arsonists who started thirty-seven fires over forty-five days which burned over 242 acres along with a residence. Jane was also received the California Senate Award of Recognition and the State Assembly Award for Recognition for Outstanding Public Safety to the citizens of California. Jane left a legacy of excellence within the fire service as she worked tirelessly to save lives and property.
Jane continued with a second career in real estate where her attention to detail and her genuinely warm personality aided many purchasing their dream home. Jane felt passionate about assisting the LGBTQ+ community in home ownership and was an advocate through her work with NAGLREP and the Alliance. Jane was also the First Vice President of the Women’s Council of Realtors.
Jane met the love of her life, Meg Marks in 2002 at the apartment building they both called home. Jane was instantly comfortable with Meg and a great love was born. Jane and Meg became Domestic Partners on Friday, June 13th, 2003. Jane spent her years loving and honoring her commitment to Meg. Jane married Meg officially on July 1st, 2013, which was the first possible day they could legally marry in California after Proposition 8 was struck down.
Jane also had an entrepreneur spirit and with her wife, Meg, founded Fire Investigator Supply which has been successfully fulfilling the needs of fire investigators for the past ten years.
Jane had many health struggles in life including cancer and kidney failure. She rarely ever complained and faced her life-threatening challenges with courage and optimism. Even at her worst, she made time for others and could be counted on despite hiding her condition from most people.
Jane was an adventurer and traveled the world. She never tired of seeing new things and experiencing life to the fullest. Some of the trips that she spoke fondly of was to Fiji, Hawaii, Niagara Falls, Spain, Italy, France, and Alaska. Jane also enjoyed Mexico, Panama, Columbia, and Guatemala. Jane always enjoyed the American tradition of the epic road trip. She visited many of the United States including New York, Nevada, Arizona, Washington, and Texas. Jane visited Las Vegas on several occasions, but preferred the outdoors and visited many National Parks including Yosemite, Kings Canyon, Sequoia, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Olympia, Great Smokey Mountains, Grand Tetons, Crater Lake, and Death Valley.
In keeping with Jane’s love of the outdoors, she ran several races such as 5K, 10K, half marathons, and a Spartan challenge. Jane loved hiking, camping, kayaking, and cycling as well. She also was an accomplished motorcyclist who always encouraged others to get out and ride. Jane was a proud member of Women in the Wind Motorcycle Group which encourages women to ride motorcycles. Jane served dutifully as the treasurer of the Steel’n Hearts chapter of the Women in the Wind.
Jane believed in service to the community not just in her career, but also in her personal life. Jane joined the Elks in 2015 and became an Elks officer in 2019 where she filled the role of Esteemed Lecturing Knight.
Jane found new ways to serve her community by becoming a HAM radio operator with the call sign KN6WNY. Jane was a board member of the Clovis Amateur Radio Pioneer club. Jane stood ready to relay information in times of crisis and disaster. Jane also was involved with Red White and Blue which supported social engagements and fitness for veterans, their families, and supporters.
Jane lived a full life as short as it was. She made the world a better place and will be missed. Jane wouldn’t want anyone to be sad at her passing and would only desire those that love her to continue in her memory living their life with courage and love.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by a family member, close friend, or funeral home staff. The writer should have a good understanding of the deceased person's life and be able to provide accurate and meaningful information.

What information should be included in an obituary?

Can I include charitable donations or memorial information in an obituary?

Yes, it is common to include information about charitable donations or memorial funds in an obituary. This allows friends and family to make contributions in lieu of flowers or other gestures.

How do I find old obituaries?

You can search online archives of newspapers or genealogy websites that specialize in historical records. Local libraries or genealogical societies may also have access to archived newspapers and obituaries.

Can I republish an old obituary online?

Check with the original publication or copyright holder to obtain permission before republishing an old obituary online. You may need to provide credit or adhere to specific guidelines.

What if I want to keep the funeral private?

If you prefer to keep the funeral private, you can still publish an obituary without including details about the service. Instead, focus on sharing memories and celebrating the deceased person's life.

Can I include quotes or poems in an obituary?

Absolutely! Quotes, poems, or lyrics can add a personal touch and help convey the emotions and sentiments you want to express in the obituary.

How do I handle errors or inaccuracies in an already published obituary?

Contact the publication or online platform immediately to report any errors or inaccuracies. They will guide you through their correction process and work to rectify the issue as soon as possible.

Can I create a digital archive of obituaries?

Yes! Many online platforms offer digital archiving services where you can store and organize multiple obituaries for future reference or research purposes.

What if I'm not comfortable writing an obituary myself?

Consider enlisting the help of a friend, family member, or professional writer who can assist you in crafting a meaningful and accurate tribute.

Social media links or hashtags can be included in modern-day obituaries to encourage sharing and online tributes. However, check with the publication or platform first to ensure they allow such links.

How do I ensure that my loved one's legacy lives on through their obituary?

A well-written obituary can serve as a lasting tribute to your loved one's life. Consider creating a memorial website or social media page where friends and family can continue to share memories and stories over time.
