Rick Kirkland - July 01, 1957 - November 29, 2023

Departed: 11/29/2023 (Lexington)
Obituary Preview: It is with deep sadness to report that Rick Kirkland, 66, passed away on November 29, 2023, in his home. Rick was born in Batesburg, SC and raised by his grandparents, the late Cleo Padgett Kirkland Kneece and her husband, John Kneece. His early life in Batesburg was formative; these were the years where he developed his love for music. That love for music included his self-taught love of the piano and his love for singing. As a teenager he was honored to sing and tour with the Presbyterian Youth Choir. A born leader, he graduated from Batesburg-Leesville High School in 1975 as the Senior Class President. Rick left Batesburg and moved to Columbia to attend the University of South Carolina and he never looked back.
While at USC, Rick excelled academically and continued his passion for singing by joining the acclaimed vocal group and USC’s musical ambassadors, Carolina Alive. During his time with Carolina Alive, he travelled and sang throughout the United States, Mexico, and the Middle East.
After graduating in 1979, Rick began his professional career as an Information Technology Specialist at the former SCE&G (now known as Dominion Energy). During his tenure, that lasted over 40 years, he was an integral member of the technology team that designed the company’s first mainframe system. He went on to co-chair two international conferences and was awarded the “Soaring Eagle” award granted to the top employees of the entire organization. Always looking to improve his communication skills, Rick joined the company sponsored chapter of Toastmasters International. His leadership skills would be used when he became a state-wide leader. His record of winning many competitions lead to him being awarded the “Toastmaster of the Decade” award.
His love for the arts was further nourished by participating in numerous local stage productions at Town Theater, Workshop Theater, and Village Square. He joined Palmetto Mastersingers, the self-proclaimed, “South Carolina’s Musical Ambassadors,” where he travelled and sang extensively throughout the southeast. Rick was also a member of Shandon United Methodist Church where, for several years, he was the keyboardist for the contemporary service band, “Life Line”.
Ralph Waldo Emerson is credited with saying “The only way to have a friend is to be one.” and Rick certainly had many friends. He loved helping people with everything from weekend building projects, such as building decks and arbors, to troubleshooting computer issues.
To know Rick is to know that he was a fierce advocate for LGBTQ+ issues. You just had to check the stickers on his vehicle or the jewelry he often wore to know he was out and proud.
Rick had some little lesser-known talents. He began cross-stitching early in his life and even earned a Blue Ribbon at the State Fair. He mastered the double side cross stitch, where the front and back mirror each other. He also had a talent and love for stain glass. Anyone visiting his home has seen his work hanging in the window.
As much as Rick loved to travel, and he did extensively, he found comfort in sitting at home watching television. Programs varied from educational to television dramas. He also loved Sci-Fi, as shown by his extensive collection of DVDs. An avid reader, he adored his eReader. Vacations always included packing his eReader.
Rick’s final wish was to make people laugh. He accomplished that often with his wonderful sense of humor, sometimes subtle sarcasm, and his infectious smile. He particularly loved playing practical jokes.
Surviving to mourn his loss is his brother Rev. Todd Kirkland (Cathy); sister, Bridget Havird (Rick); and his husband of 43 years, Clift Shealy and their two cats, Coleman and Paddington.
A Celebration of Life service for Rick Kirkland will be held at 3:00 PM, Sunday, December 10, 2023, at the Chapel of Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington, 4720 Augusta Road, Lexington, SC 29072. Pastors Mark Payne and Steven Robinson will officiate. Rick's Celebration Service will be webcast for those unable to attend through the following link: https://client.tribucast.com/tcid/1471911285. Richard A Peters - September 09, 1935 - November 26, 2022

Departed: 11/26/2022 (Lexington)
Obituary Preview: Richard Alden Peters was born to Burton and Harriet Peters in Nashua NH, the youngest of two brothers. He came to faith at a young age under the ministry of Harold and Jane Burchett. He attended Gordon College where he met his bride, Jocelyn, and the two of them set out on a lifetime adventure of serving God together.
Richard’s genuine faith journey was a constant testimony to the grace and goodness of God. With all of his energy, Richard lived a life of devotion to God with an unshakeable desire to see others find true life and deep joy in following Jesus. He gave his time to love and serve others, impacting countless lives. His mind was anchored in God’s Word, and he spent many hours sharing those truths he had taken into his own soul.
Everyone who knew Richard, could easily see how much he cherished and loved his wife, Jo. He honored her, and surely realized every day what a treasure she was to him. He built a home of stability and faith on the true principles of God’s Word, and set His children on the same course. He gave to his children and to many others a beautiful first glimpse of the eternal love of God the Father.
Life was an open adventure to Richard. He was willing to try almost anything, successfully or otherwise, from raising rabbits to exploring Afghanistan. He loved to garden, tinker, organize, and ‘run errands.’ There was an innate vulnerability that made him approachable and willing to let God’s strength be magnified in his weaknesses.
Richard served for 25 years in pastoral work, for 16 years in retail management, and another 6 years in foreign mission work, always laboring diligently and endeavoring to be light and salt in every context. He taught us how to work hard, to be faithful, and to finish the job. He ran with endurance the race marked out for him, and is now joyfully reunited with his beloved bride and His Loving Savior.
Richard is survived by his sons, Dave Peters (Brenda) of Columbia; Eric Peters (Ellen) of Columbia; his daughters, Lori Valvano (John) of Columbia; and Lisa Goralnik of Columbia; eleven grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Jocelyn, a son, Chuck Peters (Amy), and by a grandson, Brad Peters (Joyce). Obituary Preview: Chapin - Bob Rike, 82, passed to eternal peace surrounded by his family on September 6, 2022.
He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, neighbors, and coworkers. He is survived by his wife, Kay; his son, Robbie Rike (Paige); his daughter, Shannon Henry (Craig); his granddaughters, Lexie (Evan) Kirkpatrick, Caroline and Anna Joy Henry, his joyfully anticipated great-granddaughter, Charlotte Kirkpatrick, and his grandson Cal Henry. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Bob graduated from RJ Reynolds High School in Winston Salem, NC where he was reared by his parents, William Wyatt Rike, Sr. and Sadie Leonard Rike. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, William “Bill” Wyatt Rike, Jr. He attended Brevard College and graduated from East Tennessee State University, where he met the love of his life, Kay. Together, they built a beautiful and robust life dedicated to each other for 57 years. Bob worked as a poultry trader for Bird-in-Hand Farms, Inc. He was respected throughout the industry for his knowledge, honesty and commitment to a fair deal for both sides. More importantly, Bob was beloved by his customers, suppliers and colleagues. Specifically, Bob was entrusted for many years to be the exclusive supplier of several of the industry's largest companies. These processors relied on Bob to keep their plants running by negotiating supply contracts on their behalf. Bob was an integral part of their businesses; quite a responsibility for someone outside of their companies,
Aside from long time business relationships, Bob had deep personal connections to his business contacts. These connections would lead to many a deal consummated while playing golf, enjoying wonderful meals and attending sporting events. Being "on the road with Rike" was considered a very fortunate assignment. Bob was a rare breed; a salesman that both suppliers and customers wanted to interact with. Career success naturally came out of these qualities.
In addition to all of his business successes, Bob was a mentor, teacher and father figure to many of the industry's current leaders. He possessed an innate spirit of inclusion, a willingness to teach and good nature that drew people into his circle. In short, the poultry industry and Bird-in-Hand Farms were made better because of Bob.
Bob was a member of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church where he served in many capacities including the vestry, finance committee, usher, and youth group leader. He is also known as “Coach” to the unforgettable men’s softball team and a faithful University of North Carolina fan. He was an avid tennis player and golfer, and his greatest joy in life was to be surrounded by family and friends, good music and food. He planned many an adventure for those he loved, which will remain treasured memories for all who were present. He will be remembered as the most calm and even-tempered man by those fortunate enough to know him.
A memorial service will be held for Bob at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church at 170 St. Andrews Road at a date to be announced. A reception will follow after the funeral in the church Parish Hall.
