Obituary Preview: David (Dave) Allen Saunders of Perrysburg passed away peacefully at Hospice of Northwest Ohio on Tuesday April 16, after a brief illness. Dave was born in Toledo on February 10, 1931 to Lois (Long) and well-known serial comic strip writer and cartoonist Allen Saunders. He attended Libbey high school where he met his wife Charlotte (Gaynor). They were married on August 23, 1952 at historic First Presbyterian Church of Maumee, and were lifelong members. Dave was active as an elder, was responsible for the interior design of the current sanctuary, and aided in the preservation and renovation of both of the pipe organs. He attended Wabash College in Evansville, Indiana, and after graduation was called to service late in the Korean War. Upon his return he and Charlotte moved to Chicago where he attended the Chicago Art Institute and also taught interior architectural watercolor rendering. While there he landed a position with Toledo area interior designer Clare Hoffman, and moved back to the area, first living in Maumee, then in Perrysburg. After ten years with Hoffman’s firm, he left to establish his first studio, showroom, and upholstery shop in Maumee. Later, after moving to Perrysburg, he purchased the closed Sunoco station building and property on the corner of Hickory and Front Streets and had it expanded and converted into showrooms, offices, and an upholstery shop. He had clientele that spread across the country and often traveled to provide consultations and supervise installations on location. Although he eventually sold the Front Street building and moved to a much more modest location in Perry’s Landing in uptown Perrysburg, and finally to a small home office, he never stopped working in the field, reserving his time and efforts to only his oldest and most valued clients.
Outside of his active career as an interior designer Dave and Charlotte both enjoyed an active sporting and social life, playing tennis, golf, and paddle (platform) tennis, and had memberships at Belmont, Carranor Hunt and Polo, and Toledo Country Clubs. They were also part of a social group that regularly gathered to play duplicate bridge.
He and Charlotte traveled frequently, touring Portugal, Italy, France, the United Kingdom, Austria, Spain, and Greece. They also regularly spent time each winter in Sarasota and on Siesta Key, Florida.
They were both lovers of all kinds of music and theater, including operas, musicals, and stage plays, and attended productions for many seasons in Stratford, Canada and later attended Ohio Light Opera productions in Wooster, Ohio.

Nichole M. Flores - April 24, 1971 - March 13, 2024

Departed: 03/13/2024 (Perrysburg)
Obituary Preview: On the quiet evening of March 13th, our beautiful mom, Nichole Marie Flores, passed away in her home, surrounded by her loving family, at peace and ready to embark on her heavenly journey.
Nichole was born on April 24, 1971 in Toledo, OH to her parents, Genie and Jerome. From a young age she had been a part of the Diocese of Toledo, attending St. Pius X and then graduating from St. Ursula Academy, class of 1989. During her senior year of high school she was introduced to her future husband, John David Flores, on a blind date. In her recollection of this story, which she told with a beaming smile, she knew John was the man she was going to marry the moment she saw him. From a young age, Nichole was in tune with her strong intuition and guided by her faith. Per her hopeful prediction, she married John at Rosary Cathedral on July 15, 1995, the hottest day of the year. Their love and devotion to one another was unwavering and undeniable. Together and with the guidance of Christ they raised their two daughters, Isabel and Abigail.
Nichole’s faith and intuition also guided her to a successful career in Catholic education. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from John Carroll University where her love of learning and teaching was solidified. She began her career in education as a 1st grade teacher at Holy Trinity School, an experience she always remembered fondly. Nichole went on to teach 7th and 8th grade at Rosary Cathedral, but soon felt that God was calling her to a new path: to be a principal. To fulfill this calling, she completed her Master’s in Educational Leadership and Administration from Bowling Green State University. Nichole went on to help open Notre Dame Junior Academy where she proudly served as principal for 5 years. Our mom never sought out specific jobs, but rather, she listened eagerly to God’s call, going where she was needed. In 2012, St. Ursula Academy, her alma mater, was in need of a principal. With the guidance of her faith, this is where she landed.
Nichole humbly and passionately served as principal of St. Ursula Academy for the last 12 years. She was an extraordinary leader, an innovative thinker, and an inspiring role model to those around her. Our mom had the beautiful ability of identifying one’s potential beyond anything we could envision for ourselves. With her creative approach to education and leadership, she sought to challenge and motivate her faculty, staff, and students towards personal growth and achievements, lifting them up every step of the way. One of Nichole’s proudest accomplishments was helping to bring The Leadership Program for Girls to SUA, making it the first school in the nation to offer this program. Her dream was to provide an educational experience that would inspire and empower young women to be courageous and innovative leaders, sending them off to make positive waves in the world. The students at SUA were her pride and joy; everything she did was for the girls. Her contribution to Catholic education will continue to be celebrated by her students, faculty, staff, and all who knew her.
Nichole was an incredibly devoted wife, mother, daughter, sister, and friend; she wore all of these titles with honor. Her faith and passion shone brightly in every facet of her life. Our mom enjoyed traveling, especially to Europe. Some of her fondest memories come from school trips to France with her SUA girls; her and John cherished their time spent as chaperones. Most recently, they extended their journey to Bressica, Italy, home of St. Angela Merici, foundress of the Ursuline order. Nichole loved the ocean, despite having to purse her lips sealed to avoid the taste of salt water. Sitting by the shore in her big sun hat and taking long walks along the beach searching for seashells were some of her favorite pastimes.
Nichole’s passions extended to her love of Notre Dame Football and all things Fighting Irish. As a dedicated fan, she took great pride in their achievements both on and off the field and continued her enthusiastic support in victory, as well as defeat. They will certainly have a cheerleader up in Heaven.
Our mom relished and celebrated the simple things in life. She enjoyed quiet early mornings sipping freshly brewed coffee out of her beloved Polish pottery mugs, souvenirs from her European adventures. Throughout the day we found our mom solving sudoku puzzles, and if she wasn’t, her sudoku book was always resting on a table nearby, ready to be picked up again. Our mom was a talent in the kitchen, everything she made was delicious and undoubtedly made with love. She especially enjoyed keeping traditions alive by cooking old family recipes. Nichole loved dancing and listening to music, including the three months out of the year she dedicated to Christmas classics. We have fond memories of morning car rides into school with the radio blaring, our mom dancing behind the steering wheel, singing and making up her own lyrics to the songs. Surprisingly, Nichole was also an undercover rockstar who spent hours playing RockBand. We would often find her in the living room, bobbing her head to the music while playing guitar on the expert level. Above all, our mom cherished quality time with loved ones, from taking a family trip to the grocery store to spending an evening on the deck listening to music and laughing with dear friends.
Our mother was a wonder. She viewed the world through a lens of positivity and love, making it a better place for everyone around her. Her infectious smile, contagious laugh, and warm embraces will never be forgotten. To be in her presence was energizing; she inspired all of us to be better people. Nichole’s unwavering devotion to her Catholic faith and listening to God’s call every step of the way allowed her to live out her passions fiercely and with humility. She emulated all of the virtues Christ calls each of us to live by. Throughout her life, she continuously expressed how blessed she was, often remarking that the cross she carried was too small. Our mom leaves us with a beautiful legacy to learn from and live by. She will forever be remembered by her uplifting spirit and the compassion she displayed to all those who knew her.
Surviving are Nichole’s husband, John; daughters, Isabel and Abigail; mother, Genie (John) Operacz-Kheres; sister, Charissa (Joseph) Marconi; step-mother, Sally Operacz; sisters, Madison and Olivia Operacz, and many nieces, nephews, and godchildren.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents: Chester and Stella Operacz; Eugene and Irene Ricker; and her father, Jerome Operacz.
Visitation will be on Sunday, March 24, 2024 from 12 to 6 p.m. at Witzler-Shank-Walker Funeral Home located at 222 E South Boundary St, Perrysburg, OH. A memorial mass will be held on Monday, March 25, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral. Nichole was known for her fun and stylish attire; she was always dressed to impress. Please join us in celebrating our mom’s vibrant approach to life by wearing bright colors to her services.

Rick Steinline - February 12, 1946 - March 10, 2024

Departed: 03/10/2024 (Perrysburg)
Obituary Preview: On March 10th, 2024, we said goodbye to a lifelong “True Perrysburger”, Richard Linn Steinline, who passed away peacefully at Hospice Northwest Ohio, at the age of 78. Rick was born February 12, 1946, in the old Perrysburg Hospital located at the corner of Locust and East 2nd St. to Raymond and Dorothy (Feese) Steinline. He lost his father when he was six and was raised solely by his mother who never remarried.
In high school, Rick was a standout varsity athlete in basketball and football. During his junior year he was recruited to play football by Woody Hayes (Ohio State University), Bo Schembechler (Miami University), and Ara Parseghian (Northwestern University). Unfortunately, he blew out his knee and his dreams of playing collegiate football never came to fruition. Rick never married and had no children; however, he did raise three Kuvasz pups, all whom he aptly named “Bear”.
Rick worked 35 years at Byrne Paint in Toledo retiring in 2006 where he enjoyed his time and had a great respect for his boss, Charlie and the rest of the Byrne family. He never ventured far from Perrysburg. He enjoyed his sports and afternoon Coors Lights at many of the local watering holes where he never met a stranger and made many great friends. Rick enjoyed old Rock n Roll and Jazz music, walking his dog at midnight, storytelling and reminiscing. He was known for his dry sense of humor, incredible memory, and his kind and friendly demeanor. He was also generous to a fault. Rick’s booming voice filled family gatherings with happiness, and he always made his exit with an “Irish Goodbye”.
Rick was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Dorothy. He is survived by sisters, Betty Calevro, of Perrysburg, and Dottie (Steve) Honsberger, Sun City, AZ, and a brother, Ray “RJ” (Kay), of Truth or Consequences, NM, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Departed: 03/05/2024 (Perrysburg)
Obituary Preview: Carla Jean Spitler, 75 - Whitehouse, OH
Reunited with her love of 43 years, Carla Spitler joined her late husband Carl in eternal heavenly peace on March 5, 2024. A caring and friendly conversationalist, she lived an amazing life blessed by three equally amazing children, Scott Spitler (Katherine) Overland Park, Kansas; Steve Spitler (Julie), Milford, Ohio; and Shelley Spitler Merz, Dyer, Indiana. Born in Alton, Illinois on August 5, 1948 to the late V. Wayne Hurst and Virginia (Duncan) Hurst, Carla grew up in Illinois and Perrysburg, Ohio, where she spent her formative years. After graduating from Perrysburg High School in 1966, Carla attended Stautzenberger College and worked in customer service roles over the years, always with a smile and eager to help others. In her free time, she enjoyed spending time with family, friends, and Jack the cat! In addition to being survived by her three children, Carla leaves behind her brother, V. Wayne (Mick) Hurst Jr., his wife Lori (Muncie) Hurst of Escondido, California. She was also a loving grandma to eight Spitler grandchildren - Brandon, Jack, Samuel, Caroline, Isabella, Jacob, Benjamin, and James. Carla’s life was full of love. Nothing made her happier than to celebrate her grandchildren through sharing pictures and stories with friends, and her constant tokens of love through calls, texts, or her obscure holiday cards with heartfelt messages (always with $5 included). With a total of 14 nieces and nephews to round out the circle of love, one could say she had a full cup!
Preceded in death by her parents in 1993 and 1995 respectively, infant sister Judy Hurst in 1946, and her husband Carl Spitler in 2011, she is forever reunited with each, likely catching them up on all she experienced in a life filled with an abundance of great experiences.
In honor of our parents, the family respectfully asks those who are able to consider a donation in their names to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Sarah Ludick Turner - March 09, 1969 - March 04, 2024

Departed: 03/04/2024 (Perrysburg)
Obituary Preview: Our beloved mom, Sarah Ludick Turner, passed away peacefully and was received into Heaven on an uncharacteristically warm and sunny evening in March, five days before her 55th birthday. She was a skilled baker, a talented writer, and a treasured art teacher, but more than anything, she was the best and most fiercely dedicated mom in the entire world. She felt that being a mother was truly her vocation. She was cherished by everyone around her: parents, siblings, cousins, friends, students, and especially by her six children.
Sarah was born and raised in Novelty, Ohio. She grew up in a “little house in the big woods” at the bottom of a long, steep hill and often shared stories of her childhood with us kids. She spoke of playing with baby dolls and picking buttercups down by the creek with her two sisters, doting on (and dressing up) her two little brothers, and sledding down the big hill during long Cleveland winters with her best friend, Renée. Her siblings and parents described her as sensitive and nurturing: a sweet, gentle soul who loved pretty dresses and her pet bunny, Myrtle. She lived very simply with her siblings and was proud of her upbringing - Her Mom, Patty, and her dad, Tom, worked hard to make ends meet. Our mom’s resilience, discipline, and work ethic all came from her parents. She was raised Catholic and was dedicated to practicing and passing on her faith to all of her children.
During her high school years at Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin and West Geauga High, Sarah worked at Patterson’s fruit farm and told us kids many stories of burning her hands on pies that came straight out of the oven. She also worked at the Chagrin Falls Popcorn Shop. It is only fitting that our mom always made the biggest bowls of popcorn with lots of salt and butter.
Sarah nannied throughout her years at college, where she obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Communications at the University of Toledo and met our father and her former husband, Jeff, whom she was devoted to for almost 30 years of marriage. They married in 1993 and welcomed their first child in 1994. Sarah’s lifelong dream was to become a mother, and she adored her babies. She had five more children over the course of the next eighteen years. The same day that she dropped off her eldest son at college, she came home and gave birth to her youngest daughter that very evening.
Our mom was extremely organized and ran her home like a well-oiled machine. She loved her calendar, was never a minute late to anything, and felt that making a list could solve any problem (especially if it had cute stickers on it). Mom’s house was spotless. She practiced “less is more” and didn’t care to have many material possessions. She coined an organization method known as “40 bags in 40 days,” in which she would help her friends and family declutter and simplify their houses. She wasn’t afraid of hard work - or delegating Saturday chores for us children. Whether it was mulching the yard, cleaning the windows, or vacuuming the whole house in one afternoon - she got joy from checking off her to-do list.
Growing up, our mom had a home-cooked dinner on the table every night at 5:30 p.m. sharp, even during sports seasons, where she hardly missed a game for any of her four sons or two daughters. Spaghetti with meat sauce and homemade garlic bread was her favorite meal ever - we ate this once a week as kids. If you didn’t like what was for dinner, your choice was cereal or starvation. She made many family favorites (feta dip, meatloaf, calzones, and apple pie to name a few) and transcribed her most beloved recipes into a cookbook for us kids. She was an incredible baker and made the greatest chocolate chip cookies of all time. (Add extra butter, and take the cookies out a minute early!) We had no fears of consuming raw cookie dough in our house.
Our mom made every holiday special for us kids, and felt that traditions were very important. She would sew all of our Halloween costumes, and set a beautiful brunch for Valentine’s Day. She took us to pick strawberries every June, and took us to McQueens Orchard every August (Macintosh season) to get donuts before school started again. Our mom also loved making New Year’s Resolutions. All of us kids, including her many nieces and nephews, would line up with a note card in hand, ready for Mom to help us fill it out with colorful gel pens. She always gave the best advice, and if you didn’t know what you could improve on, she could give you some very insightful feedback.
Mom loved being outside, especially on hot summer days. She would wait as long as possible, until all of her children complained, to turn the air conditioning on in the summer. She also made the biggest ice cream cones you could imagine, and snuck them to the neighbor kids, even if their parents said no. She infamously believed that a suntan would cure any ailment - her home was her favorite place in the world, but Seaside, Florida was a close second.
She enjoyed riding her bike around Perrysburg, and sometimes would put our family dog, Sammy, in her bike basket. She also took lots of walks. She would walk so fast, and if you wanted to join her you had to promise her you could keep up. She kept a small garden and made our backyard an oasis filled with ferns, hostas, and hydrangeas. She also loved storms of all kinds: blizzards that turned into snow days, cozying up on rainy nights, and she especially loved tornado weather. If we were all taking shelter in the basement, she was probably outside on the front porch enjoying the chaos.
Sarah was very artistic. She would paint murals on our bedroom walls when we were little, and loved working with many mediums. She was also a skilled photographer, and had an eye for interior design. In her brief time teaching art at St. Rose School in Perrysburg, she quickly became a favorite of her students, who would look forward to her attentiveness, care, and structure. She would come home and tell endless stories about her students (her “kids”); which ones were naughty, and which ones she would absolutely die for. Some students fit both categories.
Sarah was a bookworm and loved historical non-fiction, especially stories of people overcoming hard times. She always had a deep appreciation for old things in general. An elderly couple’s love story, restoring antique furniture, and going to the estate sale of a house she always admired.
She was a very talented writer. Sarah shared her wisdom on her blog Clover Lane, which she started in 2008, building a following of thousands of subscribers from all over the world. Here she shared the trials and tribulations of motherhood as well as advice and reminders. She cherished “ordinary days” and preached that living simply and slowly and finding beauty in every small moment was the key to a meaningful life. Needless to say, she was an inspiration to so many.
Our mother was not only a beacon of guidance but also the voice of unparalleled wisdom, the one whose advice could help navigate any path of life. She loved a good conversation, and had a witty (sometimes even dark) sense of humor. She kept her circle close, including her dearest book club girls. She surrounded herself with only the most genuine people. She was the shoulder to lean on during moments of despair and often the first person you would tell of an accomplishment because of the praise she'd offer. She made everyone who knew her feel seen.
We will always feel as though our time with our sweet mom was cut short. As she liked to say, “fair is a place where pigs win ribbons.” She never wasted time feeling sorry for herself through tragedy or sickness and made the most of every day. Our mom always said, “Heaven is a good book on the beach.” We know you are enjoying the sunshine Mom, and we can’t wait to see you again.
Surviving are her children: Isaac (Cecilia), Abbey (Kyle), Matthew, Andrew, Patrick, and Janey; her parents: Tom and Patricia Ludick; her siblings: Katie, Elizabeth (David), Joseph (Karen), and Andrew (Rosemarie); her twenty-two nieces and nephews; and her first grandchild due in April.
She is preceded in death by her grandparents: Josephine (Niland) and Art Beilein; Helen (Overholt) and Joseph Ludick; and other beloved aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Visitation will be on Sunday, March 10th from 2 to 6 p.m. at Witzler-Shank-Walker Funeral Home 222 E. South Boundary St., Perrysburg (419-874-3133). Services will be held on Monday, March 11th at 10:30 a.m. at St. Rose Catholic Church. Sarah loved the many colors of spring. Please help us honor our mother by wearing your finest spring attire rather than wearing black for her services.

Alan D. Carpenter - April 08, 1944 - February 27, 2024

Departed: 02/27/2024 (Perrysburg)
Obituary Preview: Alan Douglas (Doug) Carpenter, born in Cincinnati, OH, living in the Toledo area since 1973, passed away peacefully February 27, 2024. He was the beloved husband to Darlene (Schetter), father to Kezia Carpenter, Kristy DiSalle (Chad), Kara Elliott (Jim), and grandfather to Dominic, Andrew, and Nicholas DiSalle and Derek and Samantha Elliott. His dog Lily was his faithful friend.
He will be missed by his many friends and extended family, especially his brother Tom (Allison), sister-in-law Betty, and his nephews Jeff (Cindy) and Doug (Roni) and nieces Becky Nugent (Kevin), Kelly Ruiz (Matt), and Bonnie Branan (Andy). He was preceded in death by his parents Cecil and Clara, brother Ken, and niece Sandra.
Doug met his high school sweetheart Darlene (Dar) at North College Hill High School in Cincinnati (Class of 1962). Who pursued who is always up for debate; they married November 20, 1965. Doug graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from University of Cincinnati in June 1966 cradling his first daughter, Kezia, as he sported his cap and gown. He initiated his business career working for Dun & Bradstreet in the greater Cincinnati area, Charleston, W.Va., and eventually Toledo. His twin daughters Kristy and Kara were born in 1972 in Charleston, which is why John Denver’s “Country Roads” is a family favorite.
Ultimately, Doug and Darlene made Toledo their home. Doug began working for S&R Equipment and the Schmitz family in Perrysburg, OH. He started in sales and quickly became a beloved branch manager and CEO overseeing their offices in OH, MI and IN. He was dedicated to the equipment field for over 25 years, retiring in November 2002 at age 55. He was a mentor and inspiration to his colleagues, employees, and his children and grandchildren. Doug was a quintessential family man. The Carpenters gathered for weekend visits and holidays in Cincinnati, Kings Island P&G Days, and annual fishing trips at Houghton Lake, MI. Doug was also devoted to his wife’s family the Schetters. Special memories included celebrating Christmas at Thanksgiving, visiting the Cincinnati Zoo, and taking his father-in-law Charlie to the WWII Memorial in DC to honor his military service. He taught everyone how to fish, he even turned Grandma Gladys into a fisherwoman. She famously said, “Doug’s a keeper!”
Doug and Darlene bought a lake house in Port Clinton, OH in 1996 to continue family fishing, 4th of July, and card playing traditions. Doug’s hospitality knew no bounds; he loved bringing everyone together. His family, especially his daughters, will carry on his legacy with pride. Captain Drew learned to pilot the Carp n’ D from the best. The Kingsmen’s “Louie, Louie” will always be played in his name. “Fish on!” will be exclaimed while trying to reel in a keeper. Crosswords will continue to be solved with a cup of coffee, watching boats go by.
Doug spent his early retirement well. He was a UC Bearcat season ticket holder alongside his brothers Ken and Tom. He attended family weddings and graduations, his grandchildren’s varied sporting events from baseball games to taekwondo and equestrian competitions, traveled regularly to NC to see his daughter Kara and her family, and to NYC, Ecuador, and Panamá to see his daughter Kezia. Retirement provided time for vacations out West and to Hawaii with Darlene, annual Canadian fishing trips with friends, European travel with longtime friends, and meeting his daughter Kezia in Australia. His daughters Kara and Kristy organized annual family beach weeks at the Outer Banks, NC and Doug and Dar spent many winters in Florida with his brother Ken and wife Betty. Alan Douglas, Doug, Bro, Herman, Carp, Mr. C., Papa Doug, Dad, Daddy, and Papi will be remembered with great love and laughter. He’s forever “On top of the world!”
