Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and remember the deceased, while also providing important information to those who may want to attend the funeral or send condolences. They can also be a valuable resource for genealogists and historians.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by a family member or close friend of the deceased. Funeral homes often provide guidance and assistance in writing the obituary, but it's ultimately up to the family to decide what information to include.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, and surviving family members. You may also include other relevant details, such as military service or notable achievements.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it's best to keep it concise and focused on the most important information. Aim for 1-2 paragraphs at most.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and make it more meaningful.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to find out their submission guidelines and deadlines. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment (if required).

Are there any costs associated with publishing an obituary?

Yes, many newspapers and online platforms charge a fee for publishing an obituary. The cost varies depending on the publication, word count, and other factors. Be sure to ask about pricing when submitting your obituary.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, it's becoming increasingly popular for people to write their own obituaries in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your life story is told accurately.

What if I'm struggling to write an obituary?

If you're having trouble writing an obituary, consider enlisting the help of a friend or family member. Funeral homes often have resources available to assist with writing an obituary as well.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The publication timeline varies depending on the newspaper or platform. Online obituaries are usually published immediately, while print newspapers may take several days or weeks.

Can I make changes to an obituary after it's been published?

In some cases, corrections or updates can be made to an already-published obituary. However, this may not always be possible, especially with print newspapers.

What if I want to publish an obituary in multiple newspapers?

You'll need to submit the obituary separately to each newspaper, following their individual guidelines and deadlines. Be prepared for varying costs and publication timelines.

Are online obituaries permanent?

Most online obituaries remain accessible indefinitely, although some platforms may eventually archive or remove them. It's essential to check the website's policies before submitting your obituary.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial information in an obituary?

Yes, many families choose to include information about charitable donations or memorial services in the obituary. This can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased and support a worthy cause.

How do I handle sensitive or private information in an obituary?

If there's sensitive or private information you'd rather not share publicly, consider omitting it from the obituary or using discretion when sharing details.

Can I write a humorous or lighthearted obituary?

Absolutely! While traditional obituaries tend to be formal, there's no rule against injecting humor or personality into the tribute. Just be respectful of the deceased and their loved ones.

What if I need help finding old friends or acquaintances to notify about the passing?

Social media platforms, alumni associations, and other online resources can be helpful in tracking down old friends or acquaintances who might want to know about the passing.

How do I ensure accuracy when writing an obituary?

What if I'm unsure about what information to include in an obituary?

Contact a funeral home or trusted advisor for guidance on what details are typically included in an obituary. You can also look at examples online for inspiration.

Can I create a digital memorial or online tribute instead of a traditional obituary?

Yes! Digital memorials and online tributes are becoming increasingly popular as a way to celebrate a person's life and legacy. These platforms often offer more flexibility and creative freedom than traditional print obituaries.
