What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including biographical information, funeral details, and a tribute to the deceased. It serves as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing of a loved one.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries play a significant role in honoring the life and legacy of the deceased, providing closure for those who are grieving, and serving as a historical record of the person's life.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend of the deceased writes the obituary, with assistance from funeral home staff or online obituary platforms if needed.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A standard obituary includes the deceased's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. Optional details may include a photo, memorial donations, and funeral service information.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary varies depending on the publication or platform. Traditional newspaper obituaries are usually brief (around 100-150 words), while online obituaries can be longer (up to 500 words or more) and include more detailed stories and memories.

Can I include a photo with the obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include a photo of the deceased with the obituary. This can be a meaningful way to personalize the tribute and help others remember the person.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process, deadlines, and any specific requirements they may have. Be prepared to provide the written obituary text and any accompanying photos or documents.

What is an online obituary?

An online obituary is a digital version of a traditional printed obituary, published on websites, social media, or specialized online platforms. These often include additional features like guest books, condolence messages, and sharing capabilities.

How do I create an online obituary?

You can create an online obituary through various websites and platforms that offer this service. Some popular options include Legacy.com, Obituary.com, and funeral home websites. Follow their guidelines and templates to craft your tribute.

Can I edit or update an online obituary?

Yes, most online platforms allow you to edit or update an obituary after it's been published. This can be useful for adding new information, correcting errors, or including additional photos or stories.

How long will an online obituary remain available?

The duration of an online obituary's availability varies depending on the platform or website. Some may keep them active indefinitely, while others may archive or remove them after a certain period (e.g., 1-5 years).

What is a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, typically including only essential information like name, age, date of death, and funeral details. It's often used when a full obituary isn't desired or possible.

What is the difference between an obituary and a eulogy?

An obituary is a written notice announcing the death and providing biographical information, whereas a eulogy is a spoken tribute delivered during a funeral or memorial service to celebrate the person's life and legacy.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance as part of their end-of-life planning. This can ensure that their story is told in their own words and provide guidance for their loved ones.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication or platform. Traditional newspapers often charge by the word or line, while online platforms may offer free or low-cost options with optional upgrades.

Can I request corrections to an already-published obituary?

If you find errors in an already-published obituary, contact the publication or platform directly to request corrections. They may be able to make changes or issue a correction notice.

How do I handle condolences and sympathy messages?

You can respond to condolences and sympathy messages personally or delegate this task to another family member or friend. Online platforms often provide tools for managing condolence messages and guest book entries.

What is an "in lieu of flowers" donation?

This phrase indicates that instead of sending flowers to the funeral or memorial service, mourners are encouraged to make a charitable donation in memory of the deceased. The specified charity or cause is often mentioned in the obituary.

Can I include humor or anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! Including lighthearted moments or humorous stories can help celebrate the person's personality and make the tribute more engaging and relatable.

How do I notify friends and acquaintances about the passing of a loved one?

In addition to publishing an obituary, consider sharing the news through personal phone calls, emails, social media posts, or group messaging apps to reach a wider circle of friends and acquaintances.

What is the purpose of a funeral service?

A funeral service provides an opportunity for family and friends to gather, pay their respects, share memories, and find closure as they say goodbye to their loved one.

Can I plan my own funeral in advance?

Yes, pre-planning your funeral allows you to make informed decisions about your final arrangements, alleviate burden on your loved ones, and ensure your wishes are respected.

How do I cope with grief after losing a loved one?

Grief is a natural process that takes time. Seek support from family, friends, counseling services, or support groups. Allow yourself to feel emotions, take care of your physical health, and find ways to honor your loved one's memory.

Are there any resources available for writing an obituary?

Yes! You can find templates, guides, and examples online to help you write an effective and meaningful obituary. Funeral homes and online platforms may also offer assistance or resources.
