Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It serves as a way to share the news of a loved one's passing with friends, family, and community.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries are important because they provide a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also serving as a notification to those who knew them. They can also be a valuable tool for genealogical research and can help to preserve family history.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, an obituary is written by a family member or close friend of the deceased, although it can also be written by a funeral home or other professional. The writer should have a good understanding of the person's life and be able to capture their personality and spirit in the writing.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, and survivors (family members who are still alive). It may also include information about their accomplishments, awards, or other notable achievements.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and the individual's life. Typically, an obituary ranges from 100 to 500 words. It's best to check with the publication or funeral home for specific guidelines.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the notice and make it more meaningful to readers.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online publication?

The process for submitting an obituary varies depending on the publication. Some newspapers and online sites allow you to submit online, while others require you to contact them directly or work through a funeral home. Be sure to check their website or contact them for specific instructions.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, length of the notice, and other factors. Some publications offer free or low-cost options, while others can be quite expensive. Be sure to check with the publication for pricing information.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise and can ensure that your life is represented in the way you want it to be. However, it's not necessary and most people rely on family members or friends to write their obituary after they pass away.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

Can I reprint an obituary from another source?

What if I don't want an obituary published at all?

Are there any specific guidelines for writing an obituary for someone who was young or died suddenly?

Yes, writing an obituary for someone who was young or died suddenly can be particularly challenging. It's essential to be sensitive to the family's feelings and focus on celebrating the person's life rather than dwelling on their death.
