Departed: 01/17/2023 (Franklin)
Obituary Preview: Joseph Earl Simmons, age 33 of Thompson’s Station, TN passed away on January 17, 2023. He was born on October 2, 1989 to parents Mark and Laura (Kennedy) Simmons in Landstuhl, Germany, while Mark was serving in the U.S. Air Force.
When his dad’s service in the military ended in 1991, Joe (along with his parents and big sister, Kelsey) moved to Tennessee to join their extended Simmons family. He attended a few different schools in the area, including Freedom Intermediate and Fairview High School, but his friendships stretched beyond the boundaries of any particular area.
Joe had the bluest eyes, the widest smile, and the kindest heart. He had the ability to make everyone around him feel special and was always able to make you laugh with his quick wit and hilarious comebacks. His laugh was infectious.  He loved writing, working on cars, tattoos, being outdoors, orange soda, and sherbet.
Joe’s life changed on January 11, 2016, when he became the daddy to Christian Joseph, his sidekick, his best friend, and as Joe called him, his road dog. Whether they were fishing, at the skateboard park, doing a puzzle, or playing outside, the two of them always had fun and were inseparable. Christian was Joe’s world and he was so proud to be his daddy.
He is preceded by his grandparents, Marvin and Billie Simmons. In addition to his parents he is survived by his son, Christian Joseph Carlon-Simmons; big sister, Kelsey (Simmons) Cassidy; brother-in-law, Patrick Cassidy; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousinsand friends.

Zerifia "Zif" Lorraine Berry - November 08, 1937 - January 10, 2023

Departed: 01/10/2023 (Franklin)
Obituary Preview: Zerifia Lorraine Berry (Zif), age 85 of Franklin, TN passed away January 10, 2023.
She was born in Seattle, WA to the late Parascho & Nadine Collaras. Zif graduated from high school in West Seattle, WA and then spent a few years in California, where she met and married the father of her two daughters. A sense of adventure and determination led to opportunities which took her to Kodiak, Alaska where Diana was born and then on to El Paso, Texas, where Karen was born.
While raising a family, she also decided to further her education. She attained a Bachelor of Arts and went on to teach High School English for 27 years at Anderson High School in Austin, Texas. While teaching, she also earned a Masters Degree, which allowed her to work as a school administrator the last few years of her career. She always valued and promoted public education, and saw her role in it as a lifelong and important calling. She often remarked that one day, if not in her lifetime, it was her fondest hope that public education would be truly equal for everyone and available to anyone who wished to learn, including free university education for all. She met and married the love of her life James (Jim) “Red” Berry in November, 1973. Together she and Jim had a beautiful, joyful life. For many years, they explored the world, by car, RV, planes, trains, cruise ships, and sometimes on a motorcycle,  even riding shotgun in a side-car for a time.  She loved the ocean best but loved the mountains in Colorado as well. She traveled extensively throughout the US and Europe and often reflected on her trip to Paris as a particular favorite. She loved cruising, especially with her sisters. She cherished the memories of eating fish and chips at Spuds on Puget Sound, visiting Washington D.C.s many Smithsonian Buildings,  standing in awe of Niagara Falls and the beautiful Rocky Mountains. It must also be said that no one loved visiting caves, zoos, (especially the giraffes), or the LBJ Library more than Zif!
After Jim’s passing, Zif moved to Nashville, TN to live with her youngest daughter, Karen, and her children and eventually ended up living independently in Franklin, TN where she met and enjoyed many new friends. She enjoyed card games, dominoes, Tai Chi, Chair yoga, craft classes and outings with friends. She enjoyed her outings to the symphony, Cheekwood Botanical Gardens, movies, theater, country music events, and the annual outing to see the holiday decorations at the Governor’s Mansion. Zif was also a HUGE football fan, especially the Dallas Cowboys, the Tennessee Titans, the Seattle Seahawks, the Texas Longhorns, and The Texas A&M Aggies. She even traveled to Dallas for her 80th birthday to watch the Cowboys play! She also played a mean game of Scrabble.
She was strong, independent, opinionated, and a vocal advocate for the less fortunate, animals and people alike. She will be missed by all who knew her and cherished forever in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
She is preceded in death by her adoring husband, James (Jim) Berry and by her beloved grandson, Jacob Alexander Griffin.
Zerifia is survived by her loving daughters, Diana (Don) Whiteside of Round Rock, TX and Karen Bailey Griffin of Brentwood, TN; step-son Jason (Laurie) Berry of Austin, TX; twin sisters, Nancy Charoni of Burien, WA and Del Buck of Burien, WA; grandchildren, Daniel Whiteside of Round Rock, TX, Dara (Griffin) Reeder of Georgetown, TX, George Griffin of Brentwood, TN, and Caroline Griffin of Brentwood, TN; nieces & nephews, Stephanie (Tom) Taft, Tim (Renee) Charoni, Alex Charoni,  Robert Buck, Susan (Pat) Church, all of Washington state. A Celebration of Life will be held at “Everleigh” in Franklin in the 3rd Floor Sky Lounge located at 222 Mallory Station Rd. Franklin, TN 37067,
Thursday, January 19th, 4-6PM.

Betty Lawayne Holy - January 06, 1943 - January 04, 2023

Departed: 01/04/2023 (Franklin)
Obituary Preview: Betty Lawayne Holy, 79, of Thompson’s Station, Tennessee, and formerly of Crosby, Texas, passed away Wednesday, January 4, 2023, just two days before her 80th birthday.
Lawayne was born January 6, 1943, to Thomas Bryant Thompson and Betty Lou Davis Ercanbrack in Brazoria County, Texas. She graduated from Galena Park High School and married her high school sweetheart, Robert Covington, in 1961. Throughout their marriage of 23 years, they lived in Texas, Louisiana and Tennessee and had two daughters, Robbin and Connie. Though their marriage wasn’t permanent, they remained friends and family throughout their lives.
Lawayne remarried in 1985 to Gordon Holy in Crosby, Texas. They were very involved in and around Crosby and were both prominent members of the American Legion and the Ladies Auxiliary, where each held offices, including president, for years. She enjoyed her involvement in projects, planning, fundraising, and helping others. She was widowed in 1999 when Gordon passed away unexpectedly.
Lawayne was highly active and involved in many regular activities throughout her lifetime. From softball to bowling leagues, fishing, fundraising events, gardening, school engagements, volunteering, serving on various boards of directors, and being a member of multiple organizations. She was never bored, always busy, and never stopped. She worked for many years and eventually became a businesswoman after opening an office supply store in Crosby, Texas, and later became an avid antique collector and dealer.
She was blessed with six grandchildren who referred to her as Gramz. Four of whom are adults, three married, one graduating high school this year, and the youngest about to finish middle school. Her favorite hobbies included reading books, cooking and baking. She took great pleasure in decorating and celebrating Christmas every year. She would also challenge anyone who denied that she was the #1 fan of the Dallas Cowboys - which made conversations with her sister, Carrolyn, very interesting!
She was also an avid dog lover throughout her life. Her latest was her beloved toy Yorkie, Tassi, whom she took with her everywhere she went. With bows in her hair and dressed in puppy apparel, Tassi was just as much a socialite as Lawayne, and everyone would stop them in their tracks to see Tassi. Tassi preceded Lawayne in death at age 18 (human years) in 2022.
Lawayne moved back to Tennessee to live near her youngest daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren in 2016. Unfortunately, 2019 began a long, never-ending battle for her, medically and physically, hindering her from continuing all her favorite things and enjoying life as she always knew it to be. She will be sorely missed, but she is now in a better place, free of pain and sorrow, and will continue to be in our hearts forever.
Lawayne is survived by her two daughters, Robbin (Jack) Larkin and Connie (Jonathan) McVicker; granddaughters, Lauren (Mitchell) Collins-Bailey and Allyssa McVicker; grandsons, Brent (Juan) Bonilla, Coby (Erica) Larkin, Matthew Larkin, and Ryan McVicker; sister, Carrolyn Briers; niece, Tammy (Brice) Fuselier; great-niece, Autumn Oliver; great-nephew, Hunter Oliver.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon Holy, her parents Tommy (Pat) Thompson & Betty (Alan) Ercanbrack, and nephew, Brandon Smith.
Lawayne’s celebration of life ceremony and visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 17, 2023, 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM at Integrity Funeral Home at Forest Lawn Cemetery, 8601 Almeda Genoa Rd., Houston, TX 77075. The memorial service will follow at the same location beginning at 11:30 AM.
The graveside service will be held 1:30 PM Tuesday, January 17, 2023  at Sterling-White Cemetery, 11011 Crosby-Lynchburg Rd, Highlands, TX 77562.
All are welcome to attend all or any portion of this day.

Although born in Nashville, he grew up in Oak Ridge, TN, and graduated from Oliver Springs High School. Upon graduation, he enlisted and served in the U.S. Marine Corps before moving with his wife, Deanna, to Franklin, TN, in 1965. Here he spent the remaining 58 years of his life. During these years, he started Franklin Credit Company as owner and operator and began coaching local sports teams. He coached baseball for ten years, taking his son’s 17-18yr old team to the State Tournament in Goodlettsville, TN. After winning the 1983 state championship, the team qualified for the world series in Alexandria, LA, where Franklin represented the state of Tennessee and came in 3rd place. However, he never gave up on heckling the refs and making sure the coaches knew his take on the game. In 2015 he was inducted into the Franklin Baseball Club Hall of Fame.
Lovingly called “Paw Paw” by his grandchildren, he was a present force in their lives, making it to every sporting event, graduation, wedding, and many more occasions. After retirement, he started farming and developed a love for his cows. You could often find him sipping a “coke cola,” wearing an old farm hat and blue jean jacket, heading down to his farm or the cow sale, and listening to Trade Time on WAKM radio. He was a long-standing member of Heritage Church of Christ, where he was known and loved by many of its members.
