Sue was especially enthusiastic about butterflies – alive and in various artistic presentations.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date to share memories and reflections on a life lived with purpose and love. Sue's family requests that people make donations to Boys Town in support of helping children succeed, in lieu of sending flowers. Leona Mary DeHaan - October 10, 1940 - April 18, 2024

Departed: 04/18/2024 (Wheaton)
Obituary Preview: Lee (Leona Mary Machtemes) DeHaan
With great sadness, we share the loss of our beloved mother, Lee DeHaan on April 18th, in Wheaton Illinois.
Lee was born on Oct 10, 1940, in Chicago to Eunice and James Machtemes and was a loving oldest sister to Eunice, Donna, Maureen, Chris, Jim, and Mary. She graduated from Mother of Sorrows High School in 1958 and worked at Nelson’s. She married Tom (Thomas H) Brown in 1961. Lee and Tom met when Tom’s Dad met Lee at Nelson’s and thought they would be a good match. Starting in 1963, Lee’s biggest wish, to have children / be a mom, was fulfilled with the arrival of Laurie, Kathy, Lisa and Tom.
Lee raised her children with unconditional love and support as well as consistent boundaries: 'If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.' One of Lee’s favorite sayings was 'There are only two lasting things we can hope to give our children: One is roots. The other is wings.' Her kids teased her for this, but as adults, now fully appreciate its true meaning. When they were little, she made their clothes and spectacular birthday cakes. Her house was filled with music, often with Lee singing along, and her garden bloomed with beautiful flowers.
When Tom started first grade, Lee began nursing school at St. Xavier, attending classes while the kids were at school and studying after they went to bed. The sound of the typewriter often lulled them to sleep. 'The smartest kid in 8th grade' according to her longtime friend Den, she got straight A’s while juggling full time college and motherhood. After graduating in 1979, she began her nursing career at LaGrange Memorial Hospital. She quickly moved into nursing management, eventually running three floors. Lee was instrumental in starting one of the first Hospice units in the Chicago area. In 1992, she joined Palos Hospital where she was a pioneer in the field of nursing informatics. Lee had a successful career and made lifelong friends. She was delighted to retire in 2006, allowing more time for her many interests: forest preserve walks with her dog Bailey, gardening, reading, trips to the Chicago Symphony, art museums, musicals, theater, and travel.
In 1989, Lee remarried. Abel DeHaan was the love of her life. Lee and Abel enjoyed four and a half blissful years together, watching sunsets, making bonfires in Door County, and kissing at red lights, until Abel’s untimely passing in 1993. Family was everything for Lee. In 1993, Lee became 'Grammy' with the birth of her first grandchild. Her primary delight became spending time with her beloved grandchildren: Kelley, Matt, Emily, Max, Andy, William, Sam, Alex, and Zach. Each grandchild loved their one-on-one time and Grammy camp. Favorite activities included: art projects, Lego, playgrounds, movies, dance performances, baseball games, concerts, ice cream, and even tubing!
Most of all though, Lee valued and prioritized the many close relationships she nurtured throughout her life. Her sisters and her childhood friend Therese were constant companions. Lee was a devoted caregiver during her mother’s final decades, collaborating with her sisters to ensure that their mom could safely stay at home. Lee’s warmth, positivity, intellect and empathy drew others to her. So many people who know her felt they had a ‘special relationship’ with her because she truly cared.
After a stroke paralyzed her right side, Lee’s determination, optimism, work ethic and ingenuity enabled her to live independently in Lemont for years before moving to an apartment at Westbridge Assisted Living in Wheaton. None of this would have been possible without Lee’s positive attitude and Laurie and Bill’s selfless gift of ongoing time, energy, and love to help Mom maintain independence.
Lee is survived by her children, their spouses and grandchildren: Laurie, Bill, Matt and Andy Campbell; Kathy, John, Kelley (Allan Eclarinal) and Emily Marciniak; Lisa, Max and William Spencer; and Tom, Michelle, Sam, Alex and Zach Brown; siblings Eunice (John) Harmon, Donna (Tony) Kostiuk, Maureen (Dave) Wall, Chris (Bob) Cozza, Jim, and Mary (Jeff) Fox; and by so many family and friends who loved her. She is predeceased by her husband Abel, her parents James and Eunice Machtemes, and Tom and Ethel Brown.
Her family is deeply grateful for the wonderful staff at Westbridge whose caring presence contributed to the quality of Mom’s final two years. Residential Hospice kindly collaborated with Westbridge to provide expert, compassionate care.
As a dedicated nurse whose lifelong mission was helping others, Lee graciously donated her body to the Anatomical Gift Society of Illinois.

Sr. Anthony Baechle - September 21, 1929 - April 17, 2024

Departed: 04/17/2024 (Wheaton)
Obituary Preview: Sr. Mary Anthony of Our Lady of Perpetual Help was born in St. Louis, MO on September 21, 1929. Her parents, Odile (Fallert) and Henry Baechle, named her Elizabeth. She was the sister of Sally and Charles (both deceased).
She entered the Franciscan Sisters, Daughters of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, the Wheaton Franciscans, in 1952 and following formation she professed her final vows in 1958. Over the breadth of her years she ministered, via various ministries, among the people living in Denver, CO, Milwaukee, WI, Waterloo, IA, Cape Girardeau, MO, St. Louis, MO, and at multiple times and in various ways in Wheaton, IL.
In, with, and through all her ministerial services, in the many areas where the Wheaton Franciscans served, Sr. Anthony, like her patron saint St. Anthony, faithfully helped the lost to be found and revealed the love of the Christ Child. One of her many ministerial services was as an x-ray technician. She seems to have had eyes for gazing into both the hearts of Jesus and Mary and the hearts of all whom she encountered and observed. All this gazing was accompanied by her silent presence to the hearts of all God’s creatures. Sr. Anthony was a silently saintly observer that we, her Sisters in Community, believe will always benevolently gaze over us with love. So like our Foundress, Mother M. Clara Pfaender, Sr. Anthony now breathes blessings upon us. Eternally her memory will invite us to: LET LOVE BE OUR QUEEN!

Marie Y. Mynatt - March 02, 1929 - April 04, 2024

Departed: 04/04/2024 (Wheaton)
Obituary Preview: In the early hours of April 4, 2024 - just a month after her 95th birthday - Marie Y Mynatt passed away. So ended a life of quiet service and dedication to God and His works on Earth.
Born in the Bronx on March 2, 1929 to Neger and Marie Young, she was the second of three children and only daughter. Her parents found New York unsuitable for the raising of their young children, and sent Marie and her younger brother to live with their grandmother in Savannah, Georgia.
Marie was characterized by her quiet good nature. She was popular and enjoyed socializing. Her favorite musician was Johnny Mathis. She grew up with many cousins, aunts and uncles and remained close to them through her life and travels. While she often apologized for not calling people back (a habit she could never seem to break), she never had a shortage of people calling to catch up or check up on her.
She enrolled at Clark College (now Clark Atlanta University), the first Historically Black College or University in the southern United States. There, she pledged the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, alpha phi chapter. Service was an integral part of the sorority's mission and she remained close to her sorority sisters for the next several decades. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English in 1951, and would go on to teach English Literature to middle school age children. Often she would run into former students, who remembered her with fondness and, occasionally, chagrin. In her 40s she was accepted to Boston University's Overseas Graduate Program, but ultimately decided to put her family's needs over her professional goals.
At Clark College she met Hubert Mynatt, who would become her husband. They had four children: Bruce, Kathryn, Maria, and Mark.
Throughout her life, Marie did her best to live by Catholic principles. She practiced forgiveness, charity, gratitude and service. During Operation Desert Storm, she corresponded with soldiers, letting them know they had someone thinking of them and praying for them. She was a decades-long volunteer at her local hospitals, nursing homes, and her parish. She served as a Eucharistic minister, taught CCD, and prepared children in her home parish for the rite of Confirmation. She also sent religious materials to children in Africa. She founded a prayer group that reached overseas and included over two hundred members. The prayer group in particular is remembered with fondness by her family - it was not uncommon for members to call Marie and ask for prayers for a friend or friends of friends. Without question she would add the name to the list, and more than one miraculous recovery was eventually reported back to her.
In her later years Marie devoted herself even more to her faith, professing to the Secular Franciscan Order. She traveled to many of the Marian holy sites including Fatima, The Holy Land, Rome, and others.
At the start of the Covid-19 epidemic in 2020, Marie moved in with her daughter and son-in-law, Maria Mynatt and Witold Wojciechowski. As her final illness progressed, she was kept comfortable and safe under their watch, and with the care of wonderful home aids. She received the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick and the Apostolic Pardon. She died as she lived; peacefully, and in a state of Grace.
To her family, she was characterized by her unflagging love and quiet strength. Never drawing attention to herself and striving for humility in all things, Marie was an exemplary woman. She is survived by three of her four children, five grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. Her grandchildren will always remember gleefully running from her camera at holidays, the importance she placed on saying the grace before meals, and how she tried to get them to keep her 'hip.' The eldest grandchild, Alexandra, will never forget how Marie learned the Macarena dance in the 1990s so she could do it at her church functions. She was loved deeply and will be greatly missed. Visitation at Williams-Kampp Funeral Home, 430 E. Roosevelt Road, Wheaton from 3:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., Thursday, April 11, 2024. Family and friends are asked to meet at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 1555 Glen Ellyn Rd., Glendale Heights on Friday, April 12, 2024 for Mass at 10:00 A.M. Entombment Assumption Cemetery, Wheaton, IL. Funeral info (630)668-0016 or www.williams-kampp.com
