Arlene Mae Sullivan - April 14, 1945 - April 15, 2024

Departed: 04/15/2024 (Long Prairie)
Obituary Preview: A memorial service will be at 12:00 PM, Friday, May 3, 2024 at the Williams Dingmann Family Funeral Home, Stein Chapel in Long Prairie for Arlene M Sullivan (Melrose) passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her loving family on April 15th, 2024, one day after her 79th birthday. Visitation will be from 10:30 AM – 12:00 PM at the funeral home. The celebration of Arlene’s life will continue with lunch at The Hub Supper Club,30905 County Road 13,Burtrum, MN 56318 from about 1-3pm.
Born April 14, 1945 to Ethel and Arthur “Raymond” Melrose of Canby, MN. Arlene, and her twin-sister, were the youngest of their six children. After graduating from Canby high school in 1963 Arlene moved to Minneapolis where she found work at Donaldson’s department store. She also met Richard “Dick” Sullivan who became her constant companion, devoted husband and “partner in crime” for nearly sixty years. Arlene was fond of saying that she married Dick because he made her laugh. Following their wedding in 1966, they moved to Waseca, Minnesota, where they raised three children, Richard Jr., Daniel and Gina – of whom she was fiercely proud and who were recipients of her unconditional love and support.
During their years in Waseca Arlene worked as a dental assistant for Dr. Jerome Welna. In the years before she retired, Arlene worked at the CentraCare clinic in Long Prairie.
In 1997 Arlene and Dick said good-bye to their community and many friends in Waseca and moved to the shores of Lake Beauty, outside of Long Prairie, MN, realizing their life-long dream of living in a cabin on a lake.
Arlene relished life on the lake, especially sunrises, evening pontoon rides and watching the wildlife (especially the loons) from her swinging chair in the screenhouse. And she always looked forward to her daily walks with the other “ladies of the lake”. But she was happiest when her whole family gathered there for holidays and summer vacations.
Arlene was blessed with many creative talents. She was famous for baking homemade caramel rolls for neighbors, friends, and family. She also carried on her mother’s tradition of making lefse – using the moniker “Lena’s Lefse” – which kept her busy, and covered in potato flour, each fall filling orders for this those who appreciated this Norwegian delicacy. Arlene was also a gifted seamstress, skills she mainly used to sew projects for others. She made clothing of all types including wedding gowns, prom dresses, and graduation regalia. She also made pillows, stuffed animals, Halloween costumes, and tote bags of every kind. If a project involved fabric, Arlene could make it.
She loved traveling, and together with her husband, visited many countries in Europe, including Germany, France, Poland, Czech Republic, Austria, Denmark, and the Netherlands. But without question their favorite destination was Ireland, where they had several extended visits. When not traveling abroad, they toured extensively in the Western U.S., including several winters spent in Chandler, AZ and taking frequent road trips to Illinois to visit her beloved granddaughter, Bella.
Arlene was an avid card player. And she was always eager to play Tripoli, first with her girlfriends as young mothers, and later with her family. The stakes were always low – she played for pennies and nickels – but the laughs and the memories were precious.
Arlene always wore a smile, greeted strangers warmly, and was quick to offer compliments to people she met. She had a trade-mark twinkle in her eye that would brighten whenever she landed a particularly funny pun. She exuded a special warmth and compassion that was felt by many and will be missed by all who loved her.
Arlene, is survived by her husband Richard Sullivan Sr., children Richard Sullivan Jr., Daniel Sullivan, and Gina Sullivan; granddaughter Bella Sullivan; sister Linda Anderson, twin sister Darlene Kirkeide, and sister-in-law Milly Melrose.
Arlene is preceded in death by her parents Raymond and Ethel Melrose and brothers Leland, Milton, and Charles Melrose.

John Karl Kroll - March 19, 1927 - March 19, 2024

Departed: 03/19/2024 (Long Prairie)
Obituary Preview: On his birthday, March 19, 2024, Johann Karl Wilhelm Kroll, better known as John, passed away at the age of 97. He was born in a brick farmhouse near Long Prairie, MN in 1927, and he died peacefully on the same farm where he had lived his entire life.
John loved people, especially his family and friends. And he only needed to meet someone once to consider them his friend. He enjoyed parties, campfires, and barn dances — and he was good at getting others to host the events. With an interest and memory for details of local and family history, John never ran short of stories to tell. He was also an avid reader, and he read and spoke both low and high German, having learned English in school.
John lived a strong Christian faith. He was an active member of Trinity Lutheran church, a congregation his great-grandfather helped found.
Birdwatching was John’s daily hobby. He holds the record for seeing the most bird species in Todd County at 259. A friend of nature, he delighted in cross-country skiing, growing trees, tending the forest, and making maple syrup. His coffin was made by a local craftsman from a maple tree he cut himself.
John witnessed many changes throughout the decades that spanned his life. He grew up using draft horses and drove a 17 HP John Deere B tractor for the first time in 1935. He continued driving tractor until last fall. In his usual optimism, he renewed his driver’s license just a few days before his death, as the license was about to expire on his March 19 birthday. (He had no problem with the vision test and had never worn reading glasses.) John related that as a young teenager, he had driven to that same courthouse to get his first license, paying 40 cents — no test or training required.
John was preceded in death by his father Wilhelm Kroll and his mother Hulda (Heinck) and his siblings, William, Bobby, and Edwin. John’s first wife of 38 years, Delaine (Schultz), also preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Susan (Bloch). He is also survived by his sisters Irma Johnson and Esther (David) Hartwig, his children Tom (Mary) Kroll, Tim Kroll, Hans (Lynn) Kroll, and Kate (Tom) Gray as well as 12 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends.
Always curious and kind, John looked for the good in people and for the silver-linings in life’s clouds. He now rests in our Shepherd’s arms.

A rosary will be prayed at 9:00 AM and the visitation will take place at the church two hours prior to the service. Arrangements have been entrusted to Williams Dingmann Family Funeral Home, Stein Chapel in Long Prairie.
Arnold John Bruder was born on November 10, 1923 to Arthur and Regina (Thill) Bruder in Iona Township. Arnold attended country school thru the 8th grade. He worked for area farmers and was drafted into the Army in 1944, serving our country in the 57th Infantry during World War II. Arnold enjoyed the country life. Over his lifespan, he went from farming with horses to his John Deere tractors. Never was there a lack of work. Between the morning and evening milking there were crops to tend, wood to cut and sheds to build. He thrived on the hard work. When the sun went down, he liked tapping his foot to Box Car Willie and old-time music. A highlight for him was going to town for a night of dancing with Jeanette and spending time with cousins and friends. Arnold would not allow any of this, work or play, to prevent him from being in church on Sunday. His Catholic faith was important to him.

William J Noble - September 05, 1943 - December 30, 2023

Noble, 80, will be held at First Baptist Church in Long Prairie, MN, at 11:00 AM Friday, January 5, 2024, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Pastor Matt Stacy will officiate. Visitation will be at First Baptist Church Thursday, January 4, from 5:00 -7:00 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM. Bill passed away at his home in Long Prairie, surrounded by his loving family, on December 30, 2023. Williams Dingmann Family Funeral Homes, Stein Chapel, have been entrusted with arrangements.
William “Bill” Noble was born September 5, 1943, to Floyd and Ruth (Bradford) Noble in Hutchinson, MN, the fourth of six children. He attended High School in Eagle Bend and Long Prairie and went on to serve in the Minnesota National Guard. Bill and Syneva “Snookie” Eaton were united in marriage on September 9, 1967, at the First Baptist Church in Long Prairie.
Bill always had a love for cars. He did auto body repair for Johnson’s Garage in Browerville, and vehicle detailing at Tom Blais Ford and Hillig’s Auto Center in Long Prairie. Retirement gave him the opportunity to provide lawn care services and look for deals: buying and selling vehicles and collecting toy tractors, trucks and cars, many of which were on display in his garage. Bill’s garage was his happy place, and the door was always open for friends and neighbors to stop by and swap stories.
Bill demonstrated genuine love and concern for people. His faith in the Lord and the power of prayer compelled him to pray daily for family and friends, especially those who were facing needs. His welcoming personality and sense of humor put others at ease. Spending time with his grandchildren, who affectionately called him Grandpa Duck, gave him great pleasure. Drives in the country, family gatherings, bicycle rides and trips to Cenex will provide the entire family with cherished memories.
He will be greatly missed by his wife of 56 years, Snookie; daughter Stephani (Blair) Karges of Oriska, ND and Emili (Nathan) Hibbs of Long Prairie; sisters Kaye Nuesse of Arlington, MN, and Jeanette Wallbank of Haines City, FL; brothers Rodney (Lois) Noble  of Browerville, and Russell Noble of Long Prairie; grandchildren Rylie (Oliver) Baklund, Grady (Natalie Hallstrom) Karges, Adelyn (Alex Cervantes) ffitch, Ellah Karges, Rebekah, Seth, Sarah, Levi and November Hibbs and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; daughter Elyse ffitch; brother Duane; sisters-in-law Mary and Deb Noble; brothers-in-law Tom Nuesse, Bud Shutter and Bill Wallbank, and niece Debora Noble.
The family would like to thank the nurses from CentraCare Hospice and family friend Doug Larson for Bill’s care.

Patricia "Pat" Gray - February 09, 1927 - October 29, 2023

Departed: 10/29/2023 (Long Prairie)
Obituary Preview: Patricia “Pat” Gray, née Gretsch, aged 96, passed away peacefully on October 29, 2023. Throughout her life, Pat shared a passion for community service, was known for her sharp wit, and for creating many memories with family and friends. She is preceded in death by an infant daughter, her beloved husband Don and her sister Janet Gretsch.
Pat was born February 9, 1927, to George and Catherine Gretsch in St. Paul, MN. She married the love of her life, Donald A. Gray, a Marine Corps combat veteran of WWII and captain of the St. John’s Football Team, on November 7, 1949 in Saint Cloud, MN. After marriage, Don and Pat would relocate six times before finally making Long Prairie, MN their home in 1957. They raised four children, Tom, John, Gretchen and Kevin—each of whom would go on and build families of their own. Pat and Don also welcomed into their home a foreign exchange student, Julie Woodward, who they would later travel to visit in Australia.
Pat had a passion for being involved with her community, remaining active and engaged well into her nineties and sharing that value with her family and close friends. Her energy to dedicate herself to worthy causes knew no bounds and left an indelible mark on numerous projects. She would say her most rewarding project, among many, was partnering with two friends to start “Grandmas for the Beach” which focused on raising money for lifeguards and supervisors at Lake Charlotte Beach. Pat served a variety of positions in her local parish, was President of the of the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women, and served as President of the Hospital Auxiliary for many years. She stained and installed shelves for the library, was the acting Christie House administrative secretary for 20 years, was an active, twice elected member of the school board, and an energetic member of the Literary Club. She served on the city park board and assisted in the organization of local hockey clubs. At the age of 88 she became a a visible and active member of the steering committee helping to build the new CentraCare Hospital in Long Prairie. She also served as an election judge for various elections in Long Prairie and surrounding townships, ensuring free and fair elections throughout the area.
Pat grew up in the years of the Great Depression, joining the work force immediately after high school. It may have been this giving of herself that served as the impetus for the volunteer work and sacrifice that continued throughout her life.
She would share laughs with friends playing Bridge and enjoyed debating the issues of the day. Pat was an active member of the DFL party and, as many can attest, was never shy about expressing her political opinions usually with a glass of her favorite white wine in hand. Even after movement in her hands and fingers was limited by her lifelong battle with rheumatoid arthritis, she could still manage to point out the exact amount of wine (somewhere between two and five fingers) to be poured into her glass.
Pat was passionate about lifelong learning and traveling, even after losing Don in 2005, and she continued to travel extensively, often as a participant in the elder-hostel program at the College of Saint Benedict.
A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she was the cornerstone of her family. Pat is survived by four children and their families - son Tom (Kate) Gray from Long Prairie, MN; daughter Gretchen (Rick) Larson from Bloomington, MN; son John (Ann) Gray from Green Bay, WI; son Kevin (Margaret) Gray from Saint Cloud, MN. Pat is survived by her two siblings, Jerry (Kathy) Gretsch of St. Paul and Judy Schmid of St. Cloud.
She was also loved by 10 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren: Grandson Ted and wife Ashley with great-granddaughter Adeline; Granddaughter Eleanor and husband Brandon; Granddaughter Molly and husband Goran and great-granddaughter Zelda; Grandson David; Grandson Jackson and fiancé Nathalie; Grandson Kevin and wife Tara and great-grandchildren Decker and Carter; Granddaughter Katie; Granddaughter Jenny and husband Nate with great-grandchildren Ava and Will; Granddaughter Jessie and great-granddaughter Ellyson; Granddaughter Greta and husband Alex and great-grandchildren Leo and Lincoln.
Though she is no longer with us, her spirit will continue to inspire and guide us. May we carry her legacy forward with the same passion and sense of purpose that she shared with the world.
Funeral service will be 11:00 AM Tuesday November 7, 2023 at St. Mary of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Long Prairie.  Deacon James Schulzetenberg will officiate and burial will be in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:30-7:30 PM Monday at the Williams Dingmann Stein Chapel in Long Prairie and 1 hour prior to services Tuesday at the church in Long Prairie. A prayer service will take place at 7PM Monday evening at the funeral home in Long Prairie.
Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers to the charity of your choice.
“We are visitors in this place, we are just passing through. Our purpose here is to observe, to learn, to grow, to love and
Then return home.” Anon.
