Maynard W. Yungk - February 04, 1936 - February 29, 2024

Departed: 02/29/2024 (Eden Valley)
Obituary Preview: Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. March 16, 2024 at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Cold Spring for Maynard Wilburt Yungk, 88, who passed away unexpectedly in his home in Cold Spring. Rev. Rodney Flohr will officiate and burial will be at Eden Lake Cemetery in Eden Valley. Visitation will be one and a half hours prior to the services on Saturday at Church.
Maynard was born February 4, 1936 in Grove City, MN to Richard and Mabel (Behm) Yungk. He grew up helping his parents on their farm. He graduated from Litchfield High School in 1954. He was never an avid sports participant or fan but he always loved to dance. He spent many a weekend at a local dance hall. In 1955 he joined the United States Air Force. He attended basic training at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, TX. Maynard then was stationed at Pepperrell AFB in Newfoundland for 2 years, where he was an in-air radar operator. Keeping his eyes fixed on the blinking light on the radar screen. His final duty station was at McClellan AFB in Sacramento, CA. It was there that he proposed to Shirley Hommerding. Soon after he was honorably discharged, returned home, married Shirley on June 28, 1958, and took over her family’s farm.
They lived on that farm near Eden Valley raising cattle, pigs, chickens, horses and any other animals that their daughters thought they might like to have. The farm provided a good life for his family. There are many fond memories from those years. So not only was Maynard a full-time farmer but in 1970 he began an additional career at A.M.P.I. in Paynesville as a dryer operator. He worked full-time there until his retirement in 1998. After retirement, he and Shirley took many driving trips around the U.S. to see the sites. When they were home, they always enjoyed a night out to go dancing. Making the rounds in the area to places where there was a good country western band playing. And if that band had a steel guitar player it was even better. In addition to his love of good dance music, Maynard also looked forward to his annual deer hunting trip. That trip changed over the years from just a long weekend, sometimes sleeping in a tent, at Bear’s Den near Bemidji to a 3-week stent in a family cabin. He never seemed to bring many deer home, but there were many stories shared and relived throughout the year. In 2006 they moved off the farm and into Eden Valley. He and Shirley remained there until her passing. Then Maynard moved into a 55 & up living apartment in Cold Spring. Soon after he developed a special friendship and dancing companion with Esther Hickman. They too enjoyed spending time on the dance floor together and their weekly nights out two-stepping to some of their favorite country western bands.
Maynard will be remembered for his curiosity and his positive outlook on life. He always had a question about something he heard or had seen. He had a dry sense of humor and always seemed to have something to say about a subject. He ended every phone call with his loved ones with the words ‘Sweet Dreams’. We can only wish that he is having sweet dreams now.
Maynard is survived by his daughters; Cindy (Mike) Rathbone of Richmond, Cheryll (Stuart) Benson of Mahtomedi, Lori (Deon) Singer of Rogers, Jody (Michael Sepanek) Streff of Madison, SD and Becky (Howie) Peart of Richmond; and sister, JoAnn Mickle of Atwater. Eighteen grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. Maynard was preceded in death by his parents; and wife, Shirley on March 12, 2016.
An optional memorial to the National Breast Cancer Foundation is appreciated by the family. If you would like to order flowers for Maynard's service, please contact Cold Spring Floral at (320) 685-8624

Vernon Francis Spartz was born in New London Township on April 7, 1933 to Sylvester and Sophie (Nord) Spartz, the oldest of six children. When Vernon was 10 years old his mother passed away from Tuberculosis. His father had a building moving business, and by age 12 he was driving the truck pulling the house being moved. He joined the Army and served from 1956-1958 as a wheeled vehicle mechanic in Korea. After returning home he continued to move and to build houses.
On December 17, 1976 he married Mary Klein in Spicer, MN and became a stepfather to her four children. Together they built a new home on his family farm site. It was after that when they started their own business, “Spartz Septic Service”. Vernon worked 7 days a week, whenever a call for help came, especially in summer. His clients were faithful and considered him a friend.
For many winters he and Mary spent several months in Nevada or in New Orleans and loved each place they went and the people they met. Vernon was kind, gentle, soft spoken, never raised his voice, and didn’t have an enemy in the world.

Mother wrote her own obituary as she lived her life with a focus on her children more than her own life’s accomplishments. We, her children, would like for her to be remembered for the person she was, her strength of character and presence of faith. Mother never longed for material things of this world as they were insignificant to her. She was immersed in her faith and her interactions with her family. She raised 16 children with endless hours of work cleaning, gardening, canning, baking, laundering, sewing and countless other jobs without complaint. Mother always thought of others’ needs before her own and upon the graduation of her youngest child, for over a decade, Mother cared for special needs adults through the Adult Foster Care program.
Mother served her Church through the women’s groups at Assumption Church including serving as vice president and president of the Christian Mothers and the Assumption Church Guild. She served on the Mother Theresa Mission Group and quilted with the group until she could no longer hold a needle due to her arthritic hands. After dad’s passing, mother moved to Eden Valley where she attended daily mass and served for nearly every funeral service until she moved to Paynesville, MN. She was selfless and gave her time generously to so many! She has been an inspiration to all of us throughout her life. We are honored and proud to have had her as our mother and the strength of our family we wish to emulate.
