Rev. Dr. Marvin R. King, Sr. - November 30, 1941 - March 21, 2022

Departed: 03/21/2022 (Atlanta)
Obituary Preview: Rev. Dr. Marvin Raymond King was born on November 30, 1941, in Kosciusko, Mississippi, to the late Rev. John Lucas King, Sr., and Lena Coleman King. Growing up in a large Methodist household, he was the tenth of ten siblings. Rev. King accepted Christ at an early age and was a faithful servant throughout his entire life. Rev. King was happily married to the love of his life, Lillie Cobbs King, from September 20, 1968, until his death. This union was blessed with two beloved children, Tosha King Ellis, and Marvin “Ray” King, Jr.
Rev. King attended elementary and high school at different locations in Mississippi as his family relocated during his father's ministry. He graduated from high school in Starkville, Mississippi, and obtained a bachelor’s degree at Rust College in 1967. He later obtained a Master of Divinity degree at The Interdenominational Theological Center. He devoted his life to providing quality educational opportunities for Atlanta’s low-income high school students as the Director of Morris Brown College’s TRIO programs, which include Upward Bound, Educational Talent Search and Student Support Services for over 40 years.
Known to many as a humanitarian, community leader, youth advocate, change agent, motivator, and a persistent and caring trailblazer. Morris Brown referred to him once as “A Difference Maker that Makes a Difference.” Rev. King was the first federal TRIO Director in the nation to have three Upward Bound Programs on the same college campus. He received national recognition when he was featured in the New York Times as having one of the U.S. Department of Education’s top three programs. Over 80% of graduates under his leadership entered post-secondary institutions. Receiving numerous awards from Morris Brown College, Rev. King received the Golden Apple Award from The Apple Corps and WAGA-TV5 Hearts of Youth Award for outstanding services for youth. Upon retirement, Morris Brown presented Rev. King with an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters degree in 2011, making him The Reverend Dr. Marvin R. King, Sr.
After graduating from Gammon Theological Seminary and becoming an ordained elder in the United Methodist Church Mississippi Conference, he was sent to his first full-time appointment at Kellyton United Methodist Church in Kellyton, Alabama. In 1979, Rev. King began his humble, faithful, and dedicated service to Bethel United Methodist Church. During his most precious time at Bethel, Rev. King initiated Wonderful Wednesday, First Friday, Tour of Atlanta series, Fifth Sunday youth service with youth speakers and so much more. Rev. King was an active member of the United Methodist Men and served as interim pastor during pastoral changes, thus stabilizing the congregation.
A member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Rev. King has exemplified the qualities of an outstanding leader and role model to all those his ministry touched over his many years of service. Rev. King lived by the philosophy that if we do not do it, who will do it? If it’s not done now, when will it be done? He also lived by the philosophy that “I am only one, but I am one. I cannot do all things, but I can do some things. What I can do, I ought to do, and by the grace of God, I will do.”
Rev. King was a people person. To know him was to love him. He was also a firm believer in the power of positive thinking and would always say that one should"accentuate the positive and eliminate the negative." He was a tireless servant of the Lord, a great friend, and a vessel of goodwill. Rev. King affected scores of people throughout his ministry and will be dearly missed by all.
He leaves to cherish his memory: his beloved wife, Lillie; daughter, Tosha (Harold) and son, Marvin Jr. (Dominique), his adored granddaughter, Sydney; loving grandsons, Lake and John Lucas. He also leaves to cherish his memories a host of family and friends.

Mr. Govan C. Thomas - November 21, 1935 - March 19, 2022

Departed: 03/19/2022 (Atlanta)
Obituary Preview: Retired Lieutenant Colonel Govan Clifford Thomas, 86, of Roswell, GA, peacefully exchanged time for eternity on March 19, 2022, at his home.
Govan was born in Mobile, AL, on November 21, 1935, to the late Mary and Gaines Thomas. Govan married the love of his life Sylvia E. Dunham on July 25, 1959. From that union a son was born, Brian Thomas (BT) who preceded him in death.
Govan graduated from Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic High School in Mobile, AL. In 1957, he received a BS degree in Engineering from his beloved Tuskegee University and began his military career as a commissioned officer in the United States Army by serving in the Vietnam War. During his military career, Govan rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel as he traveled the world living in Hawaii, Washington D.C., New Jersey, Arizona, and Missouri only to name a few of his tours of duty while serving his country.
Govan was recognized as the key developer of the first mode of communications back to the U.S at the beginning of the Vietnam War. After successfully completing this task, Govan’s career began to flourish until his military retirement in 1979. He proudly served his country for over 20 years. Before his retirement from the U.S. Army, Govan used his time wisely and always believed in higher education.  He pursued his dream of earning a master’s degree from the University of Missouri (1972). After this accomplishment, his quest for more knowledge was not satisfied and Govan decided to matriculate at the New York Institute of Technology, and the University of Chicago where he earned two additional master’s degrees.
After a distinguished career with the United States Army, Govan began another career with AT&T as a Communications Specialist in New Jersey.  While working as a Communication Specialist, he was selected to serve on President Bill Clinton’s Transition Team.  In this capacity Govan played a pivotal role in African Americans holding high level positions on the White House staff. When he completed his task on the Presidential Transition Team he returned to his role at AT&T.
After returning to AT&T in New Jersey, Govan was promoted to several Executive Management level positions.  His time with AT&T afforded he and Sylvia a comfortable life as they would travel the world with family and friends. Govan and his beloved Sylvia later moved from Neptune, NJ to begin their new life in Roswell, GA during the Spring of 1997. In only needing two years before retirement, he was able to finish his time working from home.  In 1999, Govan submitted his retirement date;however, his manager offered him one last option to stay on as a contractor.  This offer was respectfully declined by saying “My sail is up, but the wind isn’t blowing”.  This would end Govan’s 20-year career with AT&T.
Govan enjoyed spending time with family and friends particularly his Omega Psi Phi Fraternity brothers.  He pledged the Lambda Epsilon Chapter in 1954 at his beloved Tuskegee Institute. He holds the status of being a Life Member of this prestigious brotherhood.  His membership spans over 65 years and has mentioned many times, he loved every minute of it.  Over his years of brotherhood, Govan has served his fraternity as Basileus (Phi Upsilon 1974-1978) and achieved the honor of Omega Man of the Year later in life.  Until his illness, Govan remained active with the Chi Gamma Gamma Chapter in Atlanta, GA. His beloved son Brian (BT) that he loved so much also followed in his father’s footsteps by pledging Omega Psi Phi (Psi Chapter) at Morehouse College.  Govan and Brian shared a special bond as Omega Men.
Indeed, Govan loved his fraternity Omega Psi Phi Incorporated, however he also shared a strong bond with his New Jersey and Atlanta Guardsmen friends. He was a member of this outstanding organization for over 30-years.  He always looked forward to the Guardsmen’s weekend trips and thoroughly enjoyed the New Year’s Eve celebrations.  Prior to his loss of sight, Govan enjoyed the golf outings shared with friends within the two organizations and always welcomed the calls and visits from his fraternity brothers and Guardsmen friends.
Although Govan Thomas’s life teemed with many activities, Govan knew how to enjoy life as well as his blessings.  His seasons of leisure included traveling with his wife, Sylvia, along with his good friends and fraternity brothers Bob (Yvonne) Mann, and Herb (Nellie) Thomas. Govan was always the life of the party and wanted to make sure everyone had a good time.
When he and Sylvia were not traveling with friends and family, Govan loved to visit his hometown of Mobile, AL, especially during Mardi Gras season.  This was his time of year where he would thoroughly enjoy himself seeing his family and friends.  In particular, Govan loved to go to the biggest backyard party down the bay at the home of his good friends Tony (Bonzo) and Myrtle Gayles.   Tony was his lifelong friend, since he was five years old, who preceded him in death less than two months ago.  Govan would always say, “I don’t have to go to the Mardi Gras balls, but I will not miss Bonzo’s party”.
In addition to his loving supportive wife Sylvia E. Thomas, Govan is survived by a brother-in-law Royal Dunham, (Ida preceded in death) Washington, DC; a niece Giuliana Dunham Irving (Michael) Washington DC; nephew Christian Dunham (Deirdre) Miami, FL; three devoted cousins Joseph Juzang (Sophia) Birmingham, AL; Denise Juzang Wright (Richard) New Orleans, LA; Jerome Woods (Tamara) Mobile, AL; and numerous cousins and close friends.
His laughter, smile and love of life will be missed but Govan will never be forgotten.

Carefully review the text for spelling, grammar, and factual errors before submitting it for publication. Consider having multiple people review the draft to catch any mistakes or omissions.
