Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information about funeral services, memorial donations, and other details. They help to notify people of the passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences to the family.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. Funeral homes and obituary writers may also assist in crafting the obituary. In some cases, the deceased may have written their own obituary in advance.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, surviving family members, occupation, hobbies, achievements, and any notable accomplishments. It may also include information about funeral services, memorial donations, and where to send condolences.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary, but it's usually between 100-500 words. The goal is to provide a concise yet meaningful summary of the person's life.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and newspapers allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a nice way to personalize the tribute and help readers remember the person.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and deadlines. Some newspapers may accept online submissions, while others require email or phone submissions.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, it's becoming increasingly common for people to write their own obituaries in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise that allows you to reflect on your life and legacy.

What is a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, typically including only the most basic information such as name, age, and date of death. It's often used when a full obituary is not desired or cannot be written.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the newspaper, online platform, or funeral home. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars for a traditional newspaper obituary.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, it's difficult or impossible to make changes to an obituary once it's been published. Be sure to proofread carefully before submitting the final version.

What if I want to keep the obituary private?

If you prefer not to share the obituary publicly, you can opt for a private or restricted viewing option on online platforms or request that the funeral home only share it with close family and friends.

Can I include humor or anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! An obituary is a celebration of life, so feel free to add humorous stories or personal anecdotes that capture the person's personality and spirit.

How do I handle errors or inaccuracies in an obituary?

If you notice an error or inaccuracy in an already-published obituary, contact the newspaper or online platform immediately to request corrections. They will usually work with you to resolve the issue promptly.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial funds in an obituary?

Yes! Many families choose to include information about charitable donations or memorial funds in lieu of flowers. This can be a meaningful way to honor the person's memory and support a good cause.

What if I'm unsure about what to write in an obituary?

Drafting an obituary can be overwhelming. Consider enlisting the help of a friend or family member, or seeking guidance from a funeral home or professional writer.

Can I republish an old obituary for a future anniversary or special occasion?
