Rev. Lonnie Wetherington, Jr. - June 27, 1936 - September 23, 2023

Departed: 09/23/2023 (Vanceboro)
Obituary Preview: Rev. Lonnie Wetherington, Jr., 87, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 23, 2023 at his residence following a short but hard fought battle with cancer.
The funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 3 PM at Vanceboro Free Will Holiness Church. Burial will follow in Juniper Chapel Free Will Baptist Church cemetery.
Lonnie was born on June 27, 1936 to the late Leoana and Rev. Lonnie Wetherington, Sr. He was a dedicated pastor for 25 years at Vanceboro Free Will Holiness Church and worked as a carpenter all of his life. You could depend on his quality of work in building a home, extra room or carport. No job was ever too large or too small. He continued building until his retirement even though he never actually retired. He began to slow down by not taking larger jobs and continued doing additions and started a small rental business with his late wife, Velva.
Lonnie will be remembered for his hard work. He never just “relaxed”. He always said “when you stop moving, you die”. During the last 3 months of his life, he finally sat down, but this was not his choice. He told everyone that God had retired him and he was ready for his reward in heaven.
During his younger years, after accepting Jesus into his life, he started to minister to others in home prayer meetings. In the early 1970’s, he, along with others in his family, organized and started a small country church known today as West Vanceboro Church of God. He continued his ministry until he was called to pastor Vanceboro Free Will Holiness Church. This church was dear and close to his heart as it was his childhood church and filled with many of his earliest memories of his family’s strong ties to the ministry of serving God.
Lonnie loved spending time with his family. Fishing, hunting and cooking a rock stew for all of his “crowd” always put a smile on his face. He was a one of a kind and his family’s world will never be the same. Lonnie was a trusted and loving husband, daddy, granddaddy, brother, friend and most of all a child of God. His family has comfort in knowing he is no longer hurting and no longer worried with his earthly life.
In addition to his parents, Lonnie was preceded in death by his first wife, Velva Wetherington, and his brother, James Richard Wetherington. He is survived by wife of 12 years, Linda G. Wetherington; son, Lonnie Wetherington, III and Lisa Nobles; daughter, Lori W. Mills and husband, Raymond; grandchildren, Alisha Mills (Chris), Jim Mills, J.R. Mills, Rendi Wetherington, Lonnie W. Wetherington, IV (Will); great-grandchildren, Camrie Hart, Raymond Mills, IV, Taytum Mills; step-children, Robert Gurganus, Jr., Jennifer G. Whitehurst, Thomas Gurganus and wife, Meera, Jessica G. Kirk and husband, Matt, and Caitlin Andrews and husband, Justin; step-grandchildren, Bailee Mae Andrews, Cadence Kirk, Brian Gurganus, and  Chrisy G. Lewis and husband, Jordon; step-great grandchild, Wayne Thomas; sister, Melba Hawks; sister-in-law, Ruth Wetherington;
