Charles Durham Harris - April 22, 1945 - May 14, 2024

Departed: 05/14/2024 (Greenville)
Obituary Preview: Charles Durham Harris, born April 22, 1945 was a lifelong resident of Halifax County, NC. He passed away peacefully on May 14, 2024.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at Whitaker’s Chapel, 5356 Thirteen Bridges Rd, Enfield, NC on June 8th at 2:00pm, where he served as organist for many years. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
Born in Enfield, NC, Charles spent his early years living on the family homestead and near extended family until he left for college to attend NCSU in Raleigh, NC. After graduating with a degree in architecture & design, he then began to establish himself as a historian of architecture, art and design while working in the community, teaching at Halifax Community College, volunteering at local historical preservation boards/committees and restoring his beloved 1840’s Greek revival home, “Delphi” in Enfield. He hosted many dinner parties and events in his home and loved to entertain and share the beauty of this house and grounds. He was involved in many restoration projects in the area for both private clients, along with preservation projects such as the restoration of the Sally-Billy House and other historical buildings in Historic Halifax.
Along with his love and appreciation for the arts, he also had a passion for music and musical instruments-especially organs. Music was his true love. Although his advanced organist skills were mostly self-taught and the result of hours and hours of practice, he also had a God given talent and ability to make hymns ring from the rafters and engage the listeners to want to sing with joy and abandon. This was truly a gift. And this was a gift he did not take for granted, but always asked God to guide his hands and playing before every service and event. Charles began his career as a professional organist in his 20s at Enfield Baptist Church in Enfield NC where he remained for 20+ years. He then continued as organist at various other churches including Church of the Advent in Enfield, Trinity Episcopal Church in Scotland Neck, and Whitaker’s Chapel. His last 15+ years of being a professional organist were spent at First Presbyterian of Roanoke Rapids.
Charles traveled throughout NC, working and tuning pipe organs. His skills enabled him to work with John Farmer Organ Company (Winston-Salem) which led to his eventual work of installing and tuning the banquet hall organ at the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC. He became a skilled reed organ technicians, highly sought after for his expertise, often making the parts needed to repair the organs and restoring them to their original beauty and sound.
Charles was known by his family and friends to be creative, playful, spontaneous, individualistic, jovial, caring, supportive and generous. He was direct without reservation, but also made strangers feel welcomed as a best friend. He found joy in the simple things of life and created beauty and design from things often overlooked or discarded by others. He was truly a unique soul who loved nature, adventure, new experiences and meeting people.
Charles is preceded in death by his parents, Charlie Lee Harris and Josephine Parks Harris, two sisters Shirley H Moore and Mattie Lou Stocks. He is survived by a sister, Sylvia H Liverman (Hal) of Murfreesboro, NC, Niece Jodi Link Hudson (Rob) of Greenville, NC, Nephew Paul Link (Steven) of Frisco, TX and nephew Todd Liverman (Kim) of Virginia Beach, VA along with 6 great nieces and nephews.

She entertained often and possessed the gift of hospitality. She spent many hours helping others as a hospital volunteer, a church elder’s wife, and a friend. She was known for her meringue pies, both chocolate and lemon. Often these were taken to those sick or grieving. She wrote beautiful notes and spent most Sunday afternoons writing cards to those who needed encouragement.
