Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including biographical information, funeral or memorial service details, and surviving family members. It serves as a way to share the news of a loved one's passing with friends, family, and community.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries play a significant role in honoring the life of the deceased, providing closure for those who are grieving, and serving as a historical record of the person's life. They also help to notify others of the person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The responsibility of writing an obituary usually falls on the family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, a funeral home or mortuary may assist with writing the obituary or provide guidance on how to write one.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, cause of death (optional), occupation, hobbies, achievements, surviving family members, and funeral or memorial service details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform. Generally, it's recommended to keep it concise, around 150-200 words. However, some publications may allow for longer or shorter obituaries.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or multiple photos with the obituary. This can be a meaningful way to personalize the tribute and help others remember the person.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only the basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary, on the other hand, provides more detailed information about the person's life and legacy.

Where can I publish an obituary?

Obituaries can be published in local newspapers, online obituary platforms, funeral home websites, social media, and other community outlets. You can also create a memorial website or blog to share the obituary and memories of your loved one.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication or platform. Some newspapers and online sites offer free or low-cost options, while others may charge a fee based on the length of the obituary or additional features like photos.

Can I write an obituary for someone who has been deceased for a long time?

Yes, it's never too late to write an obituary for someone who has passed away. This can be a meaningful way to honor their memory and share their story with others.

What if I'm not comfortable writing an obituary myself?

If you're struggling to write an obituary, consider asking a friend or family member for help. You can also reach out to a professional writer or seek guidance from a funeral home or bereavement counselor.

Can I include humor or anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! Obituaries don't have to be somber and serious. Including humorous stories or anecdotes can help capture the personality and spirit of your loved one.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and guidelines. Be prepared to provide the written obituary and any accompanying photos or documents.

Can I make changes to an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, changes cannot be made to an obituary once it's been published. Be sure to proofread carefully before submitting to avoid errors or inaccuracies.

What if I want to keep the obituary private?

If you prefer to keep the obituary private, you can opt for a private online memorial or share it only with close friends and family through email or social media.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial information in an obituary?

Yes! Many people choose to include information about charitable donations or memorial funds in lieu of flowers. This can be a meaningful way to honor your loved one's legacy.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The publication timeline varies depending on the platform or newspaper. Online obituaries are often published immediately, while print newspapers may take several days or weeks to publish.

Can I republish an obituary at a later date?

Sometimes, families may want to republish an obituary on anniversaries or special occasions. Check with the original publication or platform to see if this is possible.

What if I need help finding information for an obituary?

You can gather information from various sources such as family records, photographs, letters, and conversations with relatives and friends. Funeral homes may also have resources available to help with research.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Absolutely! Quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and meaning to an obituary. Choose something that resonates with your loved one's personality or spirit.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If you're unsure about including certain information due to sensitivity concerns, consider consulting with family members or a trusted advisor. Remember that honesty and tact are essential when sharing personal details.

What if I want to create a video tribute instead of a written obituary?

Videos tributes are becoming increasingly popular as a way to celebrate someone's life. You can create a video using photos, music, and narration to tell your loved one's story.

Can I use social media to share an obituary?

Social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter can be effective ways to share an obituary with a wider audience. Consider creating a memorial page or sharing the link to the online obituary.

How do I preserve an online obituary over time?

Many online platforms offer permanent archiving options for obituaries. Be sure to check with the platform provider for their policies on preserving online memorials.

What if I need additional support during this difficult time?

Losing a loved one can be overwhelming. Don't hesitate to reach out to friends, family, bereavement counselors, or support groups for emotional support during this challenging time.
