Joyes Gorder - May 13, 1929 - May 17, 2024

Departed: 05/17/2024 (Watertown)
Obituary Preview: ***PLEASE NOTE...DATE OF DEATH HAS BEEN CHANGED TO KEEP SERVICE CURRENT***
Joyes Gorder, age 94 of Estelline, SD passed away Thursday, January 11, 2024 in Estelline.
Memorial service will be held at 10:30am Saturday, May 25, 2024 at Wight & Comes Funeral Chapel in Watertown. Interment will be at the Hillcrest Cemetery in Estelline, SD.
Joyes May (Tol) Gorder was born on May 13, 1929 to the late Charles and Palma (Gilbertson) Tol in Bigelow, MN. She was baptized at the Presbyterian Church in Canby, MN.
At a young age Joyes moved with her family to a farm NE of Brandt, SD. She attended country school there and was confirmed at the Highland Lutheran Church in Brandt. She graduated from Brandt High School in 1947. She attended Northern State College in Aberdeen, SD and later the General Beadle College in Madison, SD. Joyes taught school in Deuel County, SD for many years. Her warmth and kindness along with an angelical voice made her an adored teacher and friend. She always made sure to make people feel better and loved.
On June 24, 1951 she married Richard Gorder at Highland Lutheran Church in Brandt. Soon after they began farming in NE Estelline, SD, where they raised their family. The Gorder’s were long time members of Trinity Lutheran in Estelline. In 1990 they relocated to Watertown, SD, where they joined the Wesleyan Church.
Joyes committed her life to being a farm wife, an amazing, loving mother, grandma and great-grandma. She had an abundance of joy, so appropriately that she was so named at birth. She enjoyed her family, bible studies, homemaking, gardening and traveling with her husband.
She loved the wildflowers on the hillside and was exuberated to get May flowers for her birthday picked by her husband, sons and later on the grandchildren. She would frequently make a picnic lunch for Richard and the boys. It was great to see her headed toward the field at lunchtime with a hot meal. She enjoyed going on drives to look at crops and watch the cattle graze with Richard, this continued even after his passing, when her sons and grandchildren were then along for the ride. Joyes’s travels included many years spending winters in Arizona, Texas and Florida, often stating, “once they made it to the interstate they were on vacation and left all worries behind.” Upon Richard’s passing in 2012, Joyes moved back to Estelline and lived on her own until most recently when her failing health dictated that she move to the Estelline Nursing and Care Center, which she loved. Playing cards and doing activities with friends there kept her busy. She was so thankful for all the care she received from ENC, saying it “feels like home.” She was immensely proud of her family, and leaves behind nothing but beautiful memories. She often stated, “Do not worry, that she was comforted by her faith and we will be together again someday in Heaven.”
Joyes is survived by her sons, Randolph (Kip) Gorder, Henderson, NV, Robert (Shel) Gorder, Ft. Myers, FL. and Ron (Kathy) Gorder, Estelline, SD; daughter-in-law, Rozy Gorder, Magnolia, TX; 11 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Alice Tol, Hendricks, MN, and Helen Gorder, Watertown, SD; and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband, Richard; son, Rick Gorder; grandson, Chad Richard Gorder; and great-grandson, Lawrence Gale Gorder; sister, Adeline; brother, Dwain; and a host of close brother & sister in laws. In Lieu of sending flowers, a gift of remembrance may be sent to Wight & Comes Funeral Chapel, c/o Joyes Gorder, 1111 4th St. NE, Watertown, SD. Memorials may be designated to the Hillcrest Cemetery in Estelline or the Estelline Nursing and Care Center. Thank you! Arrangements with Wight & Comes Funeral Chapel ~ www.wightandcomes.com

Two sisters and two brothers joined the family over the next several years. She attended the parish school at Holy Cross and Ipswich High School. S. After one year of study at Mount Marty College, she received a teaching certificate in 1956 and taught at St. Joseph’s Indian Mission in Chamberlain, SD for three years. This was the beginning of her 53 year teaching career.
In the fall of 1959, S. Jeremy entered Sacred Heart Convent. As a novice, she became a founding member of Mother of God Monastery on June 15, 1961. Marilyn moved to Thief River Falls, MN to work at the hospital there for a year. She then came to Crookston where she was employed at St. Francis Hospital for a few months before accepting a position at Bethesda Hospital. Thus, Marilyn began her very fulfilling career as a Surgical and Post-Operative Recovery Room Nurse at Bethesda, which later became known as Riverview Hospital. Marilyn enjoyed bowling, cross-country skiing, crafting, and going to movies and concerts. She and Dallas experienced several wonderful trips around the country and has especially fond memories made while visiting Hawaii and the Caribbean Islands. Following their retirements they moved to their home on Lake Cormorant near Lake Park, MN and became members of Cormorant Lutheran Church. Marilyn began working during summer months as a nurse for Hospice of the Red River Valley in both Fargo, ND and Detroit Lakes, MN.
