Virginia Houchins - January 24, 1941 - November 30, 2022

Departed: 11/30/2022 (Lindside)
Obituary Preview: Virginia Houchins (nee Simmons) was born in Roby, Texas on January 24, 1941, and returned to be with the Lord on November 30, 2022. Ginger was one of six children, and the only one to live outside of Texas; she is survived by her brother Ben Simmons. She met and married Tom Warrington and together they had three children – daughter Tomme (Brad), son Casey, and daughter Amanda (Albert). Amanda and Albert gifted Ginger with two grandchildren – Tiffany and Wylie (Melissa), and great-grandson Arlo. After a divorce, Ginger married the ebullient Brian Billinghurst and became stepmother to Dawn and her daughter Jessica, and David (Krista). Following Brian’s death, she married the ever-so-patient John Houchins and added his children Linda (Eric) and Jeff to her growing family.
Ginger’s life was much like the beautiful quilts for which she was known – a colorful patchwork of adventure, shapes, sizes, and patterns. She enjoyed painting, especially watercolors. She could hardly pass a thrift store without finding a treasure and continually added to her collection of floral frogs. She also loved the Lord and would find a church family wherever she lived. She collected life-long friends who will miss her quick wit, willingness to share, and listening heart. She made the best banana pudding ever, played a serious game of Scrabble, and could sew anything. For her family, she sewed countless dresses, Halloween costumes, a splendid pirate hat, and the most perfect wedding dress for granddaughter Tiffany.
She is predeceased by her parents Jeff and Alice Simmons, siblings Bobbie Nell, Tom, and George, husbands Brian Billinghurst and John Houchins, and grandson Adam Oakes.
Services will be held at the Second Mount Olive Baptist Church, 17406 Brownsville Lane, Hamilton, Virginia on Saturday, December 3rd at 11 am (visitation at 10 am). Interment will follow in West Virginia on Monday, December 5, 2022, at Keaton Cemetery at 11:00AM with Pastor Mike Biggs officiating.
Consider making a donation in Ginger’s memory to an organization of your choice. Or make a pot of soup and share with a friend – that’s something Ginger would do.
