Thelbert M. Trimmell - February 08, 1935 - November 05, 2023

Departed: 11/05/2023 (Fredonia)
Obituary Preview: Thelbert “Bert” M. Trimmell
Thelbert M. Trimmell, 88, passed away peacefully at home with family on Sunday, November 5, 2023.
Bert, as he was known by many, was born in rural Greenwood County on February 8, 1935, to Luther “Big Boy” and Thelma (Ware) Trimmell. Bert often jokingly claimed he was born on a snowplow enroute to the hospital. He was raised on a farm/ranch near Coyville, Kansas and graduated from Coyville High School in 1952. He and his three brothers often rode horses to school and were known for having some of the finest horseflesh in the area. In high school he played on the basketball team, which led to a lifelong love of basketball, baseball, football, and other sports, both as a participant and fan. Coyville High is also where he met his future wife, Marilyn Haun. They were married on October 1, 1955, and started a family soon after with daughters Janice, Brenda, and son Ron.
After their wedding, the couple moved to Wichita, Kansas, where Bert soon began working at Boeing for its commercial and military aircraft companies. He rose through the ranks into management, overseeing many projects for the military that required top secret clearance. While his family was young, he introduced them to the Wichita Track Club, which he eventually led as the club’s president. Summer evenings were filled with track practice, and most weekends included track meets. But ranching was in Bert’s blood, and he began leasing pasture around Wichita to raise cattle. On Saturday’s he also helped operate the El Dorado Livestock Auction as a yard manager. After many years of caring for cattle during the day and on weekends, and then working second shift at Boeing, he decided to take early retirement, and go into ranching “fulltime.” He and Marilyn had purchased their first 1,000 acres of bluestem in 1979 and continued to add to the ranch for the rest of his life. His cattle were his pride and joy, and today, Trimmell Beef, LLC. Is known for raising some of the finest angus and charolais/angus cross cattle in the Flint Hills.
When he wasn’t taking care of his cattle, Bert dove deeply into politics, keeping up with most national and local issues. He was an avid follower of the cattle and grain markets, and could predict trends as well as the best market analysts. He and Marilyn greatly enjoyed making annual trips to Branson to see country music performances and comedy shows. His love of sports led to him becoming a huge KC Royals, KC Chiefs, and Wichita State Shocker basketball fan. Many family trips were taken to Kansas City for games, and he and Marilyn had WSU season tickets for many years. He was a work-a-holic, but when he wasn’t working, he knew how to have a good time with family and friends.
Thelbert M. Trimmell is survived by his wife Marilyn, daughters Janice Trimmell of Overland Park, KS; Brenda Huelsman and husband Keith, of Andover, KS; son Ron Trimmell and wife Robin of Greenwood Co, KS; six grandchildren Clay Trimmell, Caycee Russell and husband Nick, Sara Oliver and husband Thor, Ryan Rohrdanz and wife Stephenie, Brice Huelsman and wife Callan, Bridget Pullos and husband Seth; eight great grandchildren, and brother Norman and his wife June Trimmell. He was proceeded in death by his parents Luther and Thelma Trimmell, and siblings Hyla Bacon, LeRoy Trimmell and Robert Trimmell.
Funeral services are to be held at 1:30 pm, Saturday, November 11, 2023, at Wickham Family Funeral Home, 510 North 7th, Fredonia, KS. A graveside service will be held at Caley Cemetery, a half-mile north of Bert and Marilyn’s home on HH road. A dinner will follow at the Coyville Community Center. Bert’s family hopes all his friends and family will come to eat beef and swap stories about his life.

James Robert Findley - February 13, 1932 - September 01, 2023

Departed: 09/01/2023 (Fredonia)
Obituary Preview: James (Jim) Robert Findley, 91, of Fredonia, Kansas, passed away on September 1, 2023, in Chanute, Kansas. He was born on February 13, 1932, in Coyville, Kansas, to the late Lloyd and Mary Florence (Jackson) Findley.
Jim was a dedicated family man, known for his honesty, hard work, and wonderful sense of humor. He was a loving husband to Willa, his wife of 68 years. Jim will be deeply missed by his children: Patricia Abercrombie of Andover, KS, James F. Findley of Peabody, KS, Willard Findley of Fredonia, KS, Gina Odell of Fredonia, KS, Edward Kent Findley of Lenexa, KS, and Christina Valentin of Fredonia, KS. He is also survived by his three sisters: Mary Clinesmith of Chanute, KS, Shirley Becker of Emporia, KS, and Jeannie Engstrom of Rogers, AR. Jim leaves behind a legacy of love in his 21 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren, and 8 great-great-grandchildren.
Jim felt fortunate to grow up in Coyville, a small, close-knit farming community. The Findley family were especially blessed with neighbors Bert and Isla Mead who became bonus grandparents to Jim and his sisters and brothers. He loved living on a farm, surrounded by cattle and horses. He always said he was the luckiest of boys to have the family he was born into and to grow up hunting, fishing, and playing baseball whenever he had free time.
Jim's worldwide adventures began when he became restless and pestered his parents into allowing him to join the Navy in 1949 at the age of 17. After serving his country during the Korean conflict aboard a destroyer, the U.S.S. Bausell, Jim then returned to his hometown in 1953 to complete his high school education where he graduated in May of 1954. Jim's dedication to his country extended beyond his time in the Navy. He served in the National Guard in Fredonia for a year and then, in 1955, he joined the Air Force where he chose to become an Aircraft Mechanic for 16 years. Jim was also a Vietnam War veteran; he was stationed for around a year at Ubon Royal Air Force Base in 1968.
On March 6th, 1955, Jim married his trusted partner for life, Willa Mae Glover, in the Church of the Brethren with Willa’s Aunt and best friend, Ella Sissom Odell, and her husband, Jim Odell, as their witnesses.
After retiring from the military while stationed at McConnell AFB, Jim worked in the Derby School system until the family moved back to the Fredonia area. He was hired at Altoona Midway as a custodian and maintenance worker from which he retired again after many years of employment. He very much enjoyed his time at the school especially when he was left in peace to mow the campus grounds.

Emagene Walton - September 12, 1933 - July 23, 2023

Departed: 07/23/2023 (Fredonia)
Obituary Preview: Emagene Walton, 89, long time resident of Fredonia, Kansas passed away, Sunday, July 23, 2023 at Neodesha Kansas Morningstar. Emagene was born on September 12, 1933 in Enid, Oklahoma to George and Pearl Lounsbury. Her parents named her Emma Jean, but due to a miscommunication, her birth certificate read, Emagene. Her mother must have liked it, as the error was never corrected. When Emagene was 11, she was joined by her only sibling, Marion Kay. At age 1. Emagene won a “Most Beautiful Baby” contest and started singing and dancing soon after. She was singing for church by age 5 and learned to play the piano too. Emagene attended Pond Creek school where she participated in all the music groups and musicals. She was frequently asked to entertain for functions outside of school, as well as singing and playing the piano for church. Emagene’s father was a superintendent of schools, so the family moved frequently. After graduating from high school, she attended Phillips College and received her Bachelor of Music Education at Oklahoma State University.
Emagene moved to Fredonia in 1955, to teach vocal music, admitting she chose Fredonia, because they offered the best salary. She married Floyd N. Walton, JR on June 2, 1957, in Fredonia, Kansas. After 42 happy years of marriage, Floyd died on March 19, 1999.
If you ask any middle-aged Fredonia High School graduate to list their favorite teacher, chances are Emagene Walton would be high on that list. Emagene loved teaching and felt all her students were her kids. She enjoyed all the vocal music groups, even though she found the contests stressful. She taught some outstanding musicians, including Martha and Ruth Friend and Roland Reinhart, who was her only student to receive a standing ovation with his contest solo. Also memorable was a class of ‘64 men’s chorus performing a Sea Chanty at contest and senior night. She also enjoyed helping to produce high school musicals, including “Oklahoma” and “The Unsinkable Molly Brown.” Emagene taught for 36 years in the Fredonia School District, having taught at all levels, retiring in 1993. She was very successful and touched all the lives of those she taught. Emagene wrote the lyrics for the “Fight Song” and she and George Beggs wrote the music to the “Alma Mater.” All who had Emagene in school remember her beautiful outfits and shoes that she wore. Her Pageant dresses were hand made for her and nothing store bought could compare to them. From 1972 to 1985, Emagene served as the sponsor for the Pom- Pom squad. Her favorite Pom-Pom moment was when the girls wowed the crowd with their dance to “Yankee Doodle Dandy”. Her pom girls were very special to her. One group remembers her buying them all matching necklaces when they performed at Emporia State. She once ran off a group of boys who were trying to visit with her poms when they went to pom camp. Emagenes’s favorite words to speed the students along, were “Chop, Chop.”
Once Emagene retired, she continued to work as a substitute teacher for many years.
Emagene was formerly a member of First Christian Church of Fredonia and later a member of Buxton Christian church. She served in both churches, leading their choirs and frequently singing for them. She would attend music reading clinics and purchase music for the choirs with her own money.
Since moving to Morningstar in 2016, she enjoyed playing the piano for the other residents. Emagene was also a member of 1910 Club, bridge club, Retired KNEA, Hospital Auxilary and AARP. Emagene enjoyed decorating her home for each holiday. After moving to Morningstar, she had a Christmas tree that she would keep decorated to celebrate the holidays. Emagene enriched the lives of all who knew her. She was the most loving soul you would ever meet.
Emagene is survived by sons; Darole (Shirley) Walton of Fredonia, Kansas, Barry (Diane) Walton of Welch, Oklahoma, sister; Marian Myers of Flower Mound, Texas, Nieces; Amy (Jim) Golden of Mustang, Oklahoma, Sydney (Paul) Gore of Elgin, Oklahoma, Holly (Randy) Riggins of Lantana, Texas, Judy (Tom) Brownback of Blue Mound , Kansas, 10 Great nieces and nephews 2 grandchildren and many friends who loved her dearly.
Emagene was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd, her parents, George and Pearl Lounsbury and cousin, Guy Tate.
