Frederick S. Greco - September 22, 1960 - April 08, 2022

Departed: 04/08/2022 (Cut Bank)
Obituary Preview: Frederick Scott Greco, 61, of Cut Bank, passed away at Great Falls Benefis Peace Hospice on Friday, April 8, 2022, after a brave, five-year long battle with colon cancer.
A Celebration of Life for Fred will be held on Saturday, May 21, 2022, at 2 p.m. at the Joe Meagher Memorial Civic Center in Cut Bank.
“Fred was such a loving and gregarious person that you just couldn’t help loving him the minute you met him. He was truly one-of-a-kind, and he will be missed by so many…He gave so much to others, but the very best of himself was the treasure he shared only with his family whom he deeply loved,” shared a friend who knew Fred well.
Fred was born in Browning and graduated from Browning High School in 1979. During high school he put a lot of enthusiasm into playing football and enjoyed being mentored by his coach, Marvin Anderson.  After high school he attended DeVry University and graduated in 1982 with a degree in Computer Installation and Repair. Fred’s parents, Angelo and Eleanor Greco, operated Greco Bakery and Restaurant in Browning and Cut Bank from the time he was a child, so Fred grew up learning to cook and bake.
In 1988, Fred found the friend and life partner that had been missing in his otherwise full life. Fred and Jamie Adams were married in October of 1990. Their family became complete when their son, Brandon, was born in 1992.  Fred absolutely loved being a father and sharing his enthusiasm for life with his son.
When his father retired, Fred decided to change course and incorporate his love of people into a position as the Advertising Manager for the Cut Bank Pioneer Press.  He enjoyed the opportunity to use his creativity and outgoing personality in this position.  In 1999 he ventured into what Fred always jokingly referred to as “his prison days,” accepting a position as Intake Officer and Warehouse Manager at Crossroads Correctional Center.  Fred’s positive attitude and fair treatment of others served him well during this time.
In 2001 Fred was privileged to begin serving the people of the local communities through his position at Cut Bank Job Service.  He was promoted to Job Service Manager three years ago and retired last December after working for the State of Montana for 20 years.
Fred volunteered his time serving on the Glacier Community Health Center Board and the Glacier County Port Authority Board among other entities over the years. Another cause that he was passionate about was working with the young people at the 4-H Food Booth during the Four-County Marias Fair for over 25 years.  Fred loved working with these young people and understood firsthand how the skills of customer service, teamwork, community service and leadership made those young people more prepared to enter the work force as adults.
Fred was a spiritual person and was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses on Aug. 7, 1990. His firm faith in Jehovah being a loving, kind God who promises a resurrection to an earth that has been restored to paradise conditions was a comfort throughout his illness. Fred’s Bible-based belief contributed to his calm, happy and generous nature which he was so happy to share with everyone that had the privilege of knowing him.
Fred is survived by his wife of 31 years, Jamie; his son, Brandon Greco; uncle, Harvey (Kenda) Hawkins; mother-in-law, Varvarra Adams; three sisters-in-law and their families; and numerous cousins.  He is preceded by his parents, Angelo and Eleanor Greco; his paternal grandparents, Domenico and Maria Greco; maternal grandparents, Fred and Helen Hawkins; and cousin, Jeff Hawkins.
Memorials may be made to Great Falls Benefis Peace Hospice, 1101-26th St. South, Great Falls, MT 59405; or Marias Fair 4-H Food Booth, c/o MSU Extension-Pondera Co., 20 4th Ave SW, Conrad, MT 59425.
Fred’s family would like to sincerely thank Dr. Martin; the team of kind and caring nurses at Sletten Cancer Institute; and all the amazing nurses, employees and volunteers that took such loving care of him at Benefis Peace Hospice.

Jennie Lee Maston - March 03, 1921 - March 27, 2022

Departed: 03/27/2022 (Cut Bank)
Obituary Preview: Jennie Lee Flaget was born in Ethridge on March 3, 1921, to John Olson Flaget and Guri (Gina) Boe Flaget.  She died March 27, 2022, 24 days after her 101st birthday anniversary.
Funeral services will be Thursday, March 31, at 1:00pm at St. Paul Lutheran Church. Reception at the church will follow burial in Crown Hill Cemetery.
Jennie’s parents migrated to the United States in the early 1900s from Norway.  They didn’t come to the U. S. together; instead, they met in Minnesota where she was visiting her sister and he came to work at that farm.  As they followed John’s jobs across Minnesota, North Dakota and Montana, Gina Flaget bore 10 children of which Jennie was number six.
Jennie started school in that tiny town of Ethridge at the age of five and eventually her parents moved to the Cut Bank area.  In her musings about her life, she said that she met Marvin Johnson when she was 14 years old at a country dance.  That may sound young to us now, but in those days of large families, 14 was not as young as today’s 14-year-old. She had lived through the poverty of the Great Depression and understood the value of work.  When she was fifteen and her freshman year of high school completed, Marvin asked her to marry him.  She said she told him that he would have to get permission from her parents.  He immediately strolled out to the garden to ask permission and they gave their blessing.  On a trip to Havre for parts soon after his proposal, they stopped in Chester on the way in July of 1936 and said their vows in front of her brother Johnnie and Marvin’s brother Warden.  Starting with very little, they built a family and life together - from a small Seville farm to a large cattle ranch north of Duck Lake and Goose Lake.
On New Year's Eve 1938, Jennie had her first child, Gerald.  She welcomed motherhood and she learned to cook, clean and help on the farm.  Soon, she and Marvin added Neil, Nancy, and Ralph and that seemed to complete the family - until those children started adding more to her family through marriage and grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In 1972 she got up one morning in February to discover she had lost the love of her life when Marvin quietly died on their ranch of his dreams.  She, being the strong woman she was, quietly moved to Cut Bank, and bought a house and left the ranch for sons to run.  She bought a gift store on Main Street in town and soon was meeting the people of town as she helped them pick the gifts they came to buy.  Thus, she learned about town life, and she became a member of card clubs, social groups and the Lutheran Church.
On a visit to her daughter Nancy’s, she met an old friend that she and Marvin had known from their days of farming and ranching.  She and Gordon Maston renewed their friendship and soon he was making trips to Cut Bank to see her.  In March of 1979, they married in the Lutheran Church in Cut Bank and made their home together in Cut Bank.  Her life with Gordon was completely different from the farm/ranch life she experienced in her first marriage.  She and Gordon traveled, they hosted many friends in their home; they played every kind of card game they could find to learn; they joined the Sons of Norway; and participated in activities there; they learned to square dance; and he built a special room in their house so Jennie could paint.  He took her to painting lessons, a reunion of over 1200 of her family in Norway, camping, visiting relatives and cruises everywhere.  She lost Gordon in June of 1996.
Jennie loved to play cards and worked at winning.  She didn’t like to lose and felt no remorse as she won your last dime or penny.  Her talents were many.  She sang as she baked when she felt no one was listening.  She wrote poetry.  She painted with oils and watercolors and did pencil art.  She could quilt by hand and made many beauties to share with family.  She was a master of all kinds of needles, threads and yarns.  There wasn’t a craft she could not learn and coming from a family of 10 creative people, it was a constant competition to see who could bring the next craft that brought out the “ooos” and “aaahhhs” of the family get togethers.   She learned early in marriage how to make breads, the best cinnamon rolls ever, bake all the cakes, cookies and pies that she set on the table for dinners and desserts.  Her favorite description was “yummy” and this culinary art was also a family competition amongst her sisters and sisters-in-law.  Family gatherings were calorie rich.
Jennie was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Johnnie and Ole Flaget; sisters, Mollie Gibson, Josie Brekke, Elsie Ward, Cliela Presnell and Helen Johnson; son Neil Johnson; great-grandson, Brenden Johnson; and great-great grandsons Tyler Elliott and Chamomile Gonzales-McCord.
Jennie is survived by brother, Carl Flaget; sister, Mary Leonard; sons, Gerald “Jerry” (Liane) Johnson, and Ralph (Raenell) Johnson; daughter, Nancy (Don) Kraft; daughter-in-law, Jetta Johnson; grandsons, Scott (Phyllis) Johnson, Neil -JR-(Jennifer) Johnson, Bret (Lyndie) Kraft, Thane (Nancy) Johnson, Jeff (Jennifer) Kraft, Shawn (Ami) Kraft, Roman (Carrie) Johnson; granddaughters, Jeri Johnson Elliott, Barbara Johnson, and Raylee (Blaine) Suta; many beloved great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

Norma's instructions to you are this, from a newspaper clipping she’d saved for many, many years: To Remember Me (by Robert Test www.livingbank.org) At a certain moment a doctor will determine that my brain has ceased to function and that, for all intents and purposes, my life has stopped. When that happens, do not attempt to instill artificial life into my body by the use of a machine And don’t call this my “deathbed.” Call it my “bed of life,” and let my body be taken from it to help others lead fuller lives. Give my sight to a man who has never seen a sunrise, a baby’s face or love in the eyes of a woman. Give my heart to a person whose own heart has caused nothing but endless days of pain. Give my blood to the teenager who has been pulled from the wreckage of his car, so that he might live to see his grandchildren play. Give my kidneys to one who depends on a machine to exist from week to week. Take my bones, every muscle, every fiber and nerve in my body and find a way to make a crippled child walk. Explore every corner of my brain. Take my cells, if necessary, and let them grow so that someday a speechless boy will shout at the crack of a bat and a deaf girl will hear the sound of rain against her windows. Burn what is left of me and scatter the ashes to the winds to help the flowers grow. Give my sins to the devil. Give my soul to God. If, by chance, you wish to remember me, do it with a kind deed or word to someone who needs you.  If you do all I have asked, I will live forever. Cremation has taken place and her ashes co-mingled with her husband’s. A memorial service is planned for July 7th at St Paul Lutheran Church in Cut Bank with an imposition of ashes ceremony for family at a later date. Please consider supporting Alzheimer’s Association or make donations to St Paul Lutheran church or a local shelter for children or animals.

Benjamin Oscar Askelson - January 28, 1926 - October 18, 2021

Departed: 10/18/2021 (Cut Bank)
Obituary Preview: Benjamin Oscar Askelson passed away Monday night, 18 October 2021.  He was born on 28 January 1926 in Scobey, MT, the sixth of nine children by Olga Josephine (Olsen) Askelson and Oscar Bert Askelson.  He spent his early years growing up in Whitetail, MT and moved to Tacoma, WA in 1942 when he was 16 to finish high school and live with his older brothers that were immediately called away to WWII.  His character development started early, as he worked the docks from midnight to 7am and attended high school during the day.  He always said the teachers would ask him why he kept falling asleep in class and he would tell them he was tired. They wanted to talk to his parent or guardian, but he told them he lived alone.  After that he said the teachers were always nice to him and gave him good grades.
He started work for the Great Northern Railroad in Nashua, MT and worked for a few months before he enlisted in the United States Army in May of 1944 and served with the 3rd Army in WWII in the liberation of Pilsen, Czechoslovakia.  He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge and was ultimately mustered out of the Army in December 1946 as a Tech 4 (sergeant).   He subsequently served 3 more years in the Montana National Guard.
From 1946-1949 he attended the University of Washington in Seattle studying electrical engineering, but ran out of money and had to quit two (2) quarters short of getting his degree. He went back to work for the railroad in Brockton, MT.  He met Irene Lillian Solberg there and took Irene and her sister out for milkshakes. They married on 4 October 1952 and recently celebrated their 69th anniversary.  They lived in Brockton for five years, where Ben was the agent working for the Great Northern Railroad. They moved to Cut Bank, MT where they have lived in the family home for 64 years and raised their five children. He worked as a telegrapher and depot agent for Great Northern and then Burlington Northern Railroads.
He had a profound and lasting influence on his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and community. He was a very humble man and was embarrassed when anyone praised him. Ben enjoyed wood working and his family has many treasures of his exceptional talents. Ben could fix anything and was often called upon by his children to help with projects.  Ben would do anything for anyone and was once described by his old friend, Dewey Milbrandt, as being “too damn nice for his own good”. Ben loved music and often had it loudly playing as he napped, and his greatest joy was dancing with Irene. He loved spending time with family camping and last waterskied when he was 65. He always had a kind word for everyone and a listening ear, even when his hearing aids were not very effective. Ben loved playing cards and taught his family to play cribbage and pinochle.  His grandchildren and great-grandchildren always looked forward to those games when they came to visit him.  Many people even stopped into the Wash-a-Way just to play a quick game of cribbage. He supported his community as a member of the Sons of Norway, VFW, American Legion, and a lifetime member of the Moose and St. Paul Lutheran Church.  Ben had a deep but quiet faith.  He was well loved and he loved well.
He is survived by his wife Irene; two sons, Michael (Cindy) and Ronald (Rosanne); two daughters, Debra (Dick Gannon), and Cindy (Robert Roske); daughter-in-law, Lisa; nineteen grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Opal (Dick) Shields, Olive (Dib) Adeline, and Vivian (Glen) Christiansen; five brothers, George (Marion), Ray (Delight) , Edward (Eileen), Joseph (Sharon), and Robert (Jill); his son, Roger (Lisa); son-in-law, William Newman (Debra); grandsons, Ray and Lance Newman; and great-grandson, Carter Roske-Zahm.
The family would like to specifically thank the Logan Health staff for their care and compassion and the community for their support at this time.
A private family internment with Military Honors will be held at the graveside at Cut Bank’s Crown Hill Cemetery on Saturday, 30 October 2021 at 2:00 pm.  Please join the family in celebrating Ben’s life at a luncheon at the Moose Lodge, 9 W Main Cut Bank, MT at 3:00 pm.  Please leave a message of condolence for the family at www.asperfh.com. 2 Timothy 4:7-8 “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.  Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.”

Jean C. Gilbert - April 02, 1940 - October 11, 2021

Departed: 10/11/2021 (Cut Bank)
Obituary Preview: Jean Carole Gilbert passed away Monday, October 11, 2021 following complications from a stroke she suffered in August. Jean was born April 2, 1940 to Alexander (Bill) and Edna McRae in Cut Bank. Jean met her husband Jarden when he moved to Montana to work on the oil rigs. They were married on January 22, 1957 in Cut Bank. They lived in Arkansas a short time after they were married but returned to Cut Bank. Together they had five children, Eddie, Joanne, Mark, Dean and Dave. Jean was a homemaker and always made home cooked meals, many that included fresh bread.
Jean enjoyed sewing clothing for herself and her family. She also shared her knowledge and helped the Girl Scouts learn sewing skills. Jean was also a Cub Scout leader for several years. She took pride in growing a beautiful flower garden. Many summer days, she could be found in her front yard tending to her flowers. They had many pets over the years, and Jean especially loved the companionship of the family dogs. The family also has fond memories of the family loading up in the car and going to picnic in Glacier National Park. Her strength and endurance as a mother was put to the test. Mark was in a serious car accident in 1978, Eddie took his own life in 1979 and a short six months later Dean also died, in a car accident. One can only imagine the extent of her broken heart. She carried on with the help of her faith, wine, cheesecake and the love of and for her family. Jean later went to work at the Point Drive Inn and enjoyed visiting and serving the customers. She especially enjoyed the camaraderie with her bosses/co-workers, Connie and Angie. I think the friendships she formed and the fun she had at work helped to heal her broken heart.
Jean’s spirits were further boosted when she confirmed her faith and joined the Catholic Church in 2005. Prayer and meditation seemed to bring her some peace of mind. Health issues later slowed Jean down, but she loved her family and enjoyed sitting and visiting with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. As her health deteriorated, David was a loving caretaker for his mom. It brings us peace knowing that Jean is no longer in pain. It’s easy to imagine that she is enjoying all of the amazing variety of flowers in the Garden while Jarden and she reunite and make up for lost time with their sons.
Jean is survived by her daughter, Joanne Gilbert; sons, Mark (Nancy) Gilbert and David Gilbert; grandchildren, Jennifer (Mike) Way, Courtney (Andrew) Hanson, and Nicholas Gilbert; greatgrandchildren, Abby Oswald, Isabella and Haylee Wenzl and Russell, Grant and Drew Hanson; brothers, Richard (Lindy) McRae and Robert (Jean) McRae; numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her mother and father; brother, Ronnie McRae; a nephew; her husband, Jarden Gilbert, and her beloved sons, Edward Jarden Gilbert and Carl Dean Gilbert.
Jean was loved and will be missed by many.
