Claire Mae Waller - January 28, 1931 - April 26, 2022

Departed: 04/26/2022 (Kannapolis)
Obituary Preview: Claire Mae Broome Waller, 91, entered eternal life Tuesday, April 26, peacefully and surrounded by her family.  Claire was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, D. Ray Waller; parents, Samuel and Gussie Broome; her brother, Neal Broome, and sister, Mildred Broome Warlick. Claire moved to Kannapolis in the early 1950s after having attended Louisburg Junior College in Louisburg, NC, and earning her Bachelor of Science in Math and Physical Education from the then Appalachian State Teachers College in Boone. Her first job was with the Cannon Memorial YMCA in the women’s and girls’ area before taking a position as an English teacher at Winecoff School in Concord. In her words, “It was not until after our first child, Mike, was born that I accepted my first teaching position, and that first year was almost my last.” She took time off from working after that first year to have her second child, David, and stayed at home until the boys were in school. She ultimately renewed her teaching certificate and returned to teaching in her field in 1966 at Cannon Junior High School. In a biographical sketch Claire provided for Teacher of the Year information, she noted that teaching is not all fun and games, “but the rewards come from the students who feel that way in some way I challenged them and helped them grow into a better citizen and provided them with an educational basis which helped them fulfill their ambitions.”
She earned her Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from UNCC in 1977 along with a certification in Gifted and Talented. She taught regular and advanced classes of Algebra and served as a resource teacher for the gifted and talented students. Claire was Teacher of the Year at Cannon Junior High School in 1978.
Claire took her professional development seriously. She was a member of a number of professional organizations, including the NC Association of Educators, the National Education Association, Association of Classroom Teachers, National Council Teachers of Mathematics, Council Exceptional Children and the NC Association for Gifted and Talented. She held board and committee roles at a number of those. She also was active in her church and community, serving in membership, officer and committee roles at St. John’s Reformed Church, Delta Kappa Gamma Society (for women educators) and the State Employee Credit Union (advisory board), among others. This all was in addition to being a mom and supporting her sons who were athletes and Boy Scouts, and wife, supporting her husband at various YMCA events.
After retiring from teaching, Claire was active in a retired teachers organization, as well as embracing her role as a grandmother. She always was able to provide back-up child care for her grandchildren, and she and “Grandpa Ray,” had summer camp week for many years.
Maintaining family traditions was important and Claire and Ray’s home became the gathering place for years, particularly at Christmas. There was the Christmas Eve drop-in for family and friends after Christmas Eve services, the Waller Christmas night dinner with 40+ people and often a summer celebration with the same. She also enjoyed hosting or attending Broome family functions.
Claire is survived by her sons Mike (Mary) Waller of Weddington, NC, and David (Gay) Waller of China Grove; three grandchildren Lincoln (Jennifer) Waller of Cary, NC, Juliet Waller of West Palm Beach, FL, and Sarah Waller of Cary, NC; two great-grandchildren Madison and Caroline Waller; one brother, Randy (Cynthia) Broome of Mint Hill, NC; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service celebrating Claire’s life will be held Saturday, April 30, at 2 p.m., at St. John’s Reformed Church, 901 N. Main St., Kannapolis, NC, 28081, with the family receiving friends following the service. Memorials may be sent to St. John’s Reformed Church (same address as service) or to the Rowan-Cabarrus YMCA, 101 YMCA Dr., Kannapolis, NC 28081.

Tammy had a passion for people. She had a special place in her heart for taking care of the elderly and children in particular. Her initials were “TLC” which stands for tender loving care. That is what she gave wholeheartedly to each and every person she cared for. Tammy never met a stranger. Once you met her, you were her friend and she treated you with as much generosity and compassion as she could. If she loved you, you knew it because she never missed an opportunity to show her love. Most of all, she adored children. Tammy was never able to have children of her own, but she treated every child she met with so much love and they all loved her back just as much. She had a special talent for being able to see through the eyes of a child. Her vivid imagination and creativity allowed her to not only understand them, but help them have as much fun in her presence as possible. Her energy and zest for life was contagious to everyone. When she was around, it was hard not to smile and feel better about life.
Tammy also had a great love for traveling and never turned down an adventure, especially with her friends and family. Her travels included but were not limited to: Mexico, Paris, Alabama, North Carolina beaches and lakes, Georgia, Florida, and New England. Her most favorite place to travel was the mountains of Colorado and Tennessee. In addition, Tammy thoroughly enjoyed shopping and decorating. She was a collector of many things and always wanted to share the happiness and beauty of her unique finds. Not only did she shop for herself, she always had others in mind as well.. Anyone who knew her knew that you couldn't leave her house without her giving you a souvenir to take with you.

Additionally, 2 other little boys, Layton Cooley and Kam Rowlette held special places in her heart. Many thanks are given to her very special, lifelong best friends Ann Fink and Chrystal Stiller, as well as cousin Kathy Faggart, for helping Susan keep a 24 hour vigil with Tammy so she would never be left alone at the hospital.
Tammy had a beautiful mind, a beautiful heart and a beautiful soul. She will be dearly missed by all who loved her.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's often published in newspapers, online obituary platforms, or funeral home websites to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who need to know about the passing. They help to notify people of the funeral or memorial service details, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences to the grieving family.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. Funeral homes or obituary writers may also assist in crafting the obituary, especially if the family needs guidance or support during this difficult time.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A standard obituary usually includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), surviving family members, and any notable achievements or hobbies. It may also include funeral or memorial service details and information on how to make donations in lieu of flowers.

How long does it take to write an obituary?

The time it takes to write an obituary can vary depending on the complexity and length of the notice. On average, it can take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours to craft a well-written and meaningful obituary.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and funeral homes allow you to upload photos or other multimedia elements to accompany the written notice. This can help to make the obituary more personal and engaging.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and guidelines. Some newspapers may have online forms or email addresses for submitting obituaries, while others may require a phone call or in-person visit.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, it's possible to make corrections or edits to an obituary after it's been published. However, this may depend on the publication's policies and deadlines. It's essential to review the obituary carefully before submission to minimize errors.

How long do obituaries stay online?

The duration that an obituary remains online varies depending on the platform or website. Some online obituary platforms keep notices archived indefinitely, while others may remove them after a certain period (e.g., 30 days). Funeral home websites may also have different policies regarding the length of time they display obituaries.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, it's becoming increasingly popular for people to write their own obituaries in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise in reflecting on one's life and accomplishments, and it can also spare loved ones from having to write it during a difficult time.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information like name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a more detailed and personalized notice that celebrates the person's life and legacy.

Do I need to include my loved one's cause of death in the obituary?

No, you're not obligated to disclose the cause of death in an obituary. In fact, many families choose not to include this information out of respect for their loved one's privacy or to avoid sensitive topics.

Can I include humor or anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! Obituaries don't have to be somber or formal. Including lighthearted stories or humorous anecdotes can help capture the personality and spirit of your loved one.

How do I handle writing an obituary for someone with a complex or troubled past?

This can be a challenging task. It's essential to approach the situation with empathy and sensitivity. Focus on celebrating the person's positive qualities and achievements while being honest about their struggles. You may also consider seeking guidance from a professional writer or counselor.

Can I write an obituary for someone who was cremated?

Yes, you can still write an obituary even if your loved one was cremated. The notice can include information about any memorial services or celebrations of life that will take place.

Do I need to mention all of my loved one's relatives in the obituary?

No, you don't need to list every single relative in the obituary. Typically, you'll want to include immediate family members (spouse, children, siblings) and any other close relatives who were significant in your loved one's life.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Yes! Including meaningful quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and personality to the obituary. Just be sure to verify any copyright restrictions before publishing.

How do I ensure that my loved one's online presence is respectful after they pass away?

You can request that social media platforms memorialize your loved one's accounts or remove them altogether. Additionally, consider creating a digital legacy plan that outlines how you'd like your online presence managed after your passing.

What is the role of an obituary in the grieving process?

An obituary serves as a way for friends and family to acknowledge their loss publicly and begin the grieving process. It provides a sense of closure and allows people to come together to mourn and celebrate their loved one's life.

Can I use an online template or generator to write an obituary?

Yes, there are many online resources available that offer templates or generators to help guide you in writing an obituary. These tools can be helpful, but be sure to personalize the content and make it unique to your loved one.

How do I share an obituary on social media?

You can share an obituary on social media by copying and pasting the link from an online platform or by creating a post with the text of the obituary. Be sure to tag relevant friends and family members so they're notified about the post.

Can I write multiple versions of an obituary for different audiences?

Yes! You might want to create different versions of the obituary tailored for specific groups, such as close friends and family versus coworkers or acquaintances. This allows you to share unique aspects of your loved one's life with each audience.

What is the typical length of an obituary?

The length of an obituary can vary greatly depending on the publication and purpose. Typically, newspaper obituaries range from 100-500 words, while online platforms may allow for longer notices.

Can I include charitable donations information in an obituary?

Absolutely! Many families choose to include information about charitable organizations that were important to their loved one. This allows friends and acquaintances to make donations in lieu of flowers as a way to honor their memory.

How do I proofread an obituary for errors?

Carefully review the obituary multiple times for spelling mistakes, grammatical errors, and factual inaccuracies. Ask others to review it as well before submitting it for publication.
