Dennis was born on June 16, 1938, in Salmon Arms, B.C. and enjoyed growing up in rural Canada with his two brothers and three sisters. Elmerna Lucille DeBolt - June 28, 1929 - March 14, 2024

Departed: 03/14/2024 (White Salmon)
Obituary Preview: ELMERNA LUCILLE (McCOUN) DEBOLT
Elmerna DeBolt, was born June 28th, 1929, in Bedford, Iowa, from the union of Irene Brand and James McCoun.  She passed away peacefully at the Rock Cove Assisted Living facility in Stevenson, Washington on March 14th, 2024.  She was 94 years of age.
Merna spent much of her childhood in the care of her grandmother Maude and Maude’s second husband Elmer Dutton on a small farm in southwest Iowa.  She reunited with her mother Irene and stepfather George Wyant in Bingen, Washington where she attended high school in White Salmon, graduating in 1947.  Having developed an admiration for several of her high school teachers, she went on to attend the Northwest Missouri State Teacher’s College in Maryville, MO.
In the late 1940’s she began her teaching career in one room schoolhouses in southwest Iowa near where she was born and raised.  Always having wanted to marry an Iowa farmer, she was wed to Merle A. DeBolt in December of 1950.  The union produced two sons, Paul Merle born in 1955 and Charles Stuart born in 1964.
Merle and Merna relocated to the Pacific Northwest settling first at Mill-A, and then later in Carson, WA.  Merna continued her passion for the education of young people in both the Mill-A and Carson-Stevenson School Districts where she was employed variously as a teacher, an aide and as a librarian.
She was a natural storyteller and could entertain as well as educate her students through her stories and poems.  Many of those students remember her fondly and are today’s parents and grandparents.  When she wasn’t working with youngsters in school, she would tutor them in her home.  Often serving warm baked goods along with her lessons.
She was a gifted communicator, both as a speaker and as a writer.  As the bicentennial of the Lewis and Clark expedition approached, she took on the role of Meriwether Lewis’ mother Lucy Marks as a way to further educate students and adults about the expedition, sharing insights and little-known facts about the trek through her one woman show.  To her credit, the role took on a life of its own and was carried on well after the bicentennial remembrances were past.  Additionally, she was called upon by many in the community to give eulogies for friends and family alike.  Her contributions while serving on the board of the interpretive center included her regular columns Museum Musings which appeared in the Skamania County Pioneer for many years.
Merna was a devoted wife and mother, as well as a gracious hostess enjoying the role of opening her home for much socializing with friends and family alike.  She made friends in every group of people she became associated with while being active in her community through her work with the PTA, the Columbia Gorge Interpretive Center, Sweet Adelines, Toastmasters and many other groups.  Her faith life was the cornerstone of her life as she was a faithful member of several congregations throughout her life including the Stevenson United Methodist Church where she and Merle were active members since the mid 1960’s.  She was a regular participant for many years in the Skamania County Fair entering her flowers and her baked goods for judging.  If she ever won anything less than a blue ribbon, she quickly destroyed the evidence.
She is survived by her son Paul and his wife Ann, half sister Susan Doidge, half brother William Wyant,  grandchildren, Lisa (Chris) Scott, Nathan (Gianna) DeBolt, and Aaron (Cristina) DeBolt, Hilary DeBolt and five great grandchildren, Adeline, Everly and Annabelle Scott, Jack and Lindy Mercer.  She was preceded in death by her husband Merle in 2006, her son Charles Stuart in 1965, and her eldest grandson Brian in 2023.
Her family will be forever grateful for the staff at Rock Cove Assisted Living where she spent her final years along with Bristol Hospice for their kindness and empathy.
A memorial service will be held at the United Methodist Church in Stevenson at 2:00 PM on Saturday March 23rd.  Reception to follow in the church’s fellowship hall.  Any remembrances in her name can be made to either the Columbia Gorge Interpretive Center or to the Stevenson United Methodist Church.

Rebecca Louise Beeks - November 24, 1944 - March 01, 2024

Departed: 03/01/2024 (White Salmon)
Obituary Preview: In the rolling golden hills of Dallesport, Washington, amidst the sprawling acres of a vibrant "truck garden" farm, the story of Rebecca Louise Beeks, affectionately known as Becky, begins. Born into the Migaki family on November 24, 1944, in the shadow of a Japanese internment camp in Ontario, Oregon, Becky's life was a testament to the enduring power of love, selflessness, resilience, and family.
From the earliest days, as she played and worked in the fields of her family's farm, Becky's world was framed by the values her parents, Masashi and Mary Yoneko Migaki, whom she cherished deeply. Working hard and caring for those around her were values that she learned at a young age. The family's gratitude towards Dickey Farms of Bingen, Washington, for keeping their farm operational during their internment, was a lesson in kindness and community support that Becky carried with her always.
Growing up, Becky's life was rich with the simple joys of rural living—hunting for mushrooms, picking huckleberries in the mountains, and clam digging along the Washington coast with her siblings Roger, Janet, and Gerry. She would also spend time with their close-knit Japanese American community including the Toda family, Akita family, Ogawa family, and more. School days in Lyle, Washington, were filled with cheerleading, volleyball, and band, where Becky's spirited energy and warmth drew people to her and created lifelong friends.
At 14, Becky's life took a fairy-tale turn when she met Dennis Elmer Beeks, a meeting that would bloom into a love story for the ages. Their first date, a drive-in movie in Dennis' parents' ‘58 pink Dodge, marked the beginning of an inseparable bond. Married on July 19, 1961, in Yakima, Washington, Becky and Dennis embarked on a journey filled with love, adventure, and shared dreams, starting with a honeymoon that spanned the scenic coastlines of Oregon and Washington to the snowy slopes of Mt. Hood.
The early years of their marriage were a time of growth and new beginnings. The arrival of their children, Deborah "Debbie" and Dennis "Rick", brought immense joy and purpose to Becky's life. Her role as a mother was one she cherished above all else. She dedicated herself to nurturing and supporting her children's passions and pursuits with an unwavering selflessness that ensured they never felt the lack, prioritizing their needs and happiness above all.
To her, bringing family together was priceless. Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews, nieces, and beyond were included in every celebration. Her home developed a reputation as a sanctuary that knew no foe. Years of togetherness, nights filled with games and laughter, and countless holidays and celebrations solidified a foundation of familial bonds and underscored the unbreakable significance of family. Her affection for her family deepened alongside its growth. Witnessing her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren unwrap Christmas and birthday gifts, excel in sports, attain academic successes, and reach life milestones brought her unparalleled joy.
Becky's professional journey mirrored her personal dedication to her community. Starting in the packing shed on her family's farm, she soon became a familiar face at the Dallesport post office, eventually rising to the role of postmaster. Alongside Dennis, she ventured into multiple businesses including logging, trucking, and operating a vineyard. She managed the accounting for each business with the same meticulous care she applied to every aspect of her life. Moreover, Becky worked with her siblings to tend the Migaki orchard, ensuring the legacy of her parents continued into perpetuity, a testament to her commitment to preserving family heritage and contributing to its growth.
Their home, a haven of warmth and welcome, became the backdrop for countless family gatherings, celebrations, and moments of connection. Becky's commitment to her family and friends always came first, and her love for baking and cooking became one of her most expressive love languages. She was renowned for working all day and then coming home to bake treats filled with love and joy, gifting food and pastries as tokens of her affection and care. This act of giving was not just about the food itself but was a tangible representation of her love, thoughtfulness, and desire to nurture those around her, always putting others first.
Music, song, and a connection to nature were essential to Becky's life. She found joy in playing the piano, creating a melodious backdrop for her home, and cherished dancing with Dennis, sharing rhythmic moments of happiness. Her green thumb flourished in her garden and with her houseplants, reflecting her love for nurturing life and beauty in her surroundings. These activities showcased her zest for life and her commitment to creating spaces filled with joy.
Becky's love for the outdoors—mushroom hunting, foraging for huckleberries, clamming, fishing, and roaming the world with her husband—were passions that lasted throughout her life. These activities were not just hobbies but an integral part of who she was, embodying her love for nature and adventure. Together with Dennis, she explored the natural beauty of their surroundings, always eager to share the bounty of the earth with friends and family. This love of exploration and appreciation for the natural world were hallmarks of a life lived fully, side by side with the love of her life, Dennis.
As the seasons change and the fields of Dallesport continue to flourish, Becky's legacy lives on, a reminder of the beauty that grows from a life lived with love at its core. On March 1st, 2024, Becky passed away peacefully at her home. She leaves behind a family and a community enriched by her love—her husband, Dennis; her children, Debbie (husband Brian) and Rick (wife Tracie); her grandchildren, Becca, Brandon (wife Dora), Cody (wife Kelsie), Zack (wife Aubree), Kameron (wife Kirsten), Nick, Noah and 11 great-grandchildren; her siblings Janet, Roger (wife Deliah), Gerry (wife Annie); and a circle of friends that was better for her presence. Her story is one of a life well-lived, marked by the countless lives she touched with her generosity, her spirit, and her unwavering commitment to family which will be perpetuated for generations to come.

Adams and Indian Heaven, and it was here that Gene developed his lifelong skills at fishing, and especially hunting.  Gene also developed a refined sense of humor and a love for cowboy poetry, and became quite proficient at writing humorous, rhymed verse, for the pleasure and amusement of those who sat with him around an evening campfire. In 1991 he retired from the Fish and Wildlife Service and in retirement continued to hunt until just recently.  Gene truly enjoyed working with younger hunters, teaching them how to care for firearms, and to track and shoot.Gene has no immediate living family except for Connie, but he has a devoted number of relatives on Connie’s side and close friends who’ve loved and treasured his friendship.  This was often apparent as he hunted the Glenwood hills and valley and was hailed by name from the locals who might pass him on its game trails.   Later this spring there will be a Celebration of Life for Gene announced.  It will occur at the Kreps Ranch in Gilmer Valley. In memory of Gene, Connie asks for those inclined to give, to send a contribution in Gene’s name to the Parkinson’s Foundation, in his behalf.
